Microsoft 365 Copilot can appear in the standalone Copilot app, on the web, and inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. That split is where many Copilot 365 problems start: the button is missing, the license will not validate, or the file opens in a place Copilot cannot use. Start by opening Copilot in the right place, then fix the app, browser, file, or license issue that matches what you see.
Start with the Microsoft Copilot app
The most common cause of confusion is opening the wrong Copilot surface for the account or license you are using.
Open the Microsoft Copilot app on Windows or Mac, go to copilot.cloud.microsoft or www.copilot.com in a browser, or open the Microsoft Copilot app on iPhone, iPad, or Android.
Select Sign in, then use the personal, work, or school account tied to your Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license.
Use the left navigation pane for Chat, Library, Agents, Search, and any other experiences available for that account.
Open the waffle menu when you want to launch Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Teams.
On Windows, press the Copilot key or Windows key + C to open Copilot. On Mac, press Option + Spacebar to open the smaller Copilot interface.
If the app is not installed, get it from Microsoft Store on Windows, Microsoft's Copilot app download page or the Apple App Store on Mac, the Apple App Store on iOS or iPadOS, or Google Play on Android.
Install Microsoft 365 apps for in-app Copilot
Copilot inside desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote needs the Microsoft 365 apps installed on your PC or Mac.
Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and select Sign in.
With a personal Microsoft account, select Install apps.
With a work or school account, select Apps in the left navigation pane if it appears, then select Install apps and Microsoft 365 apps.
Install the apps, then open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint with the account that has the eligible subscription or Copilot license.
If installation finishes and Copilot still is not visible, update Microsoft 365 and refresh the license before reinstalling Office.
Open Copilot inside Office files
Open a document in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint with a Copilot-enabled account.
Select the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the corner of the document.
When the app's Agent opens in the right chat pane, type a prompt, choose a suggested action, or ask a question about the file.
In Word, ask Copilot to create, edit, summarize, rewrite, or answer questions about the document.
In Excel, ask for insights, trends, visualizations, forecasts, or answers from the workbook data.
In PowerPoint, ask for slide summaries, rewritten bullets, images, answers about the presentation, or help preparing audience questions.
In Outlook, open Copilot Chat from Outlook's Copilot entry points and prompt it about your inbox, calendar, meetings, or messages.
In OneNote, open Copilot Chat and ask it to summarize notes, draft to-do lists, prioritize tasks, or work with page content.
On Windows desktop or web, press Alt + C to focus the Copilot Dynamic Action Button.
On Mac desktop or web, press Cmd + Control + I.
On any platform, press F6 to move focus to the Copilot Dynamic Action Button, then press Up Arrow to move through suggested prompts.
Right-click the Copilot Dynamic Action Button and select Dock when it blocks part of the document.
Right-click the button and select Move to ribbon when you want the command in the ribbon. The choice is remembered across sessions on Windows build 16.0.20129.15140 or later and macOS build 16.109.525.2 or later; on the web it applies only to the current session.
Use the Dynamic Action Button shortcuts first; F6 is the universal fallback.
Bring back a missing Copilot button
First check whether the button moved rather than disappeared. Microsoft consolidated the in-app entry point into the Copilot Dynamic Action Button, anchored in the lower-right corner of the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file. If it is not there, the cause is usually an outdated Microsoft 365 build, a stale license state, the update channel, or connected experiences being turned off.
On Windows, open any Microsoft 365 app, create a new document, and go to File > Account.
Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
If Update Now is missing, select Enable Updates first.
Still in File > Account, select Update License.
Close and restart all open Microsoft 365 apps.
On Mac, open a Microsoft 365 app, select the app name menu such as Word or PowerPoint, then select About Word or About PowerPoint.
Select More Info..., select Refresh License, then close open documents and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
If privacy settings are blocking Copilot on Windows, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
Turn on Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences.
On Mac, open Word > Preferences > Privacy, then turn on Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences.
In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Online, select the browser Refresh icon first. If Copilot still does not appear, use the browser cookie fixes below.
Fix license errors in the browser
Use this when Copilot opens in a Microsoft 365 web app but shows a license validation error. The browser is usually blocking the cookie behavior Microsoft uses for validation.
In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and More > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data.
Set Block third-party cookies to Off.
In Chrome, open Customize and control Google Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security.
Select Allow third-party cookies.
In Firefox, open Open Application Menu > Settings > Privacy & Security.
Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, select Custom and leave Cookies unchecked.
In Safari on macOS, open Safari > Settings... and select Privacy.
Under Website tracking, leave Prevent cross-site tracking unchecked.
Select Advanced, then leave Allow-privacy-preserving measurement of ad effectiveness and Block all cookies unchecked.
Refresh the Microsoft 365 web app after changing the setting.
Make files work with Copilot
File errors usually come from keeping the document in a storage location Copilot cannot use for validation or access.
Move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint, then use Copilot with that copy.
For Excel with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium, turn on AutoSave and save the workbook to OneDrive before using Copilot in the workbook.
On mobile, open Chat in the Microsoft Copilot app and prompt Copilot to create a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file.
Select the generated download link to preview the file.
To edit it, let Microsoft Copilot redirect you to the matching Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile app.
Use Search for recent files, and use OneDrive when you need the full file list.
Turn off Copilot without removing Office
Pick the control that matches what you want to change.
- 1.In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote on Windows with a personal Microsoft account, go to File > Options > Copilot, clear Enable Copilot, select OK, then restart the app.
- 2.On Mac with a personal Microsoft account, open the app menu, go to Preferences > Authoring and Proofing Tools > Copilot, clear Enable Copilot, then restart the app.
- 3.In Outlook on Android, iOS, or Mac, use Quick Settings > Copilot; in Outlook on the web or new Outlook for Windows, use Settings > Copilot. The choice applies to Outlook on all devices for the same account.
- 4.When an app does not have the Copilot checkbox, turn off experiences that analyze your content in connected-experiences privacy settings. This also disables suggested replies, text predictions, PowerPoint Designer, automatic alt text, and other connected experiences.
- 5.To hide the ribbon icon without disabling Copilot, right-click empty ribbon space, select Customize the Ribbon, and remove the Copilot command from the ribbon customization UI.
- 6.To remove only the Windows Copilot app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, search for Copilot, open More options, and select Uninstall. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps, search for Copilot, and select Uninstall.
Talk to Copilot when typing is slower
Voice works when you want to ask a quick question without typing, and Microsoft lists a Microsoft Copilot license requirement for voice features.
On desktop or web, open Microsoft Copilot or the Microsoft Copilot app, sign in with a work or school account, and select Start a new voice chat in the prompt box.
Select Mute/pause or End voice chat to stop.
On Windows desktop, open Microsoft Copilot with a Microsoft 365 work or school account.
From the left-side menu, select Settings and more, then choose Settings > Quick View.
Turn on Listen for "Hey Copilot".
Say Hey Copilot to start a voice chat. The wake word is off by default, responds only to English, and does not work when the screen is locked or when audio from another app is playing.
On iPhone, iPad, or Android, tap the voice chat icon in the prompt box or say Hey, Copilot.
Stop with the microphone mute icon, the end voice chat icon, or Goodbye, Copilot.
On iOS, activate Siri and say Talk to Microsoft Copilot, Start voice chat with Microsoft Copilot, or Open Microsoft Copilot voice mode.
If Siri asks which app to use, select Microsoft Copilot.
If voice chat does not start, grant Copilot microphone access in your browser or device settings, then confirm the account holds the Microsoft Copilot license that voice features require. Microsoft states voice features are not currently available to users without one.
Check work settings that block M365 Copilot
On a work or school account, the most common cause is that your organization controls Copilot availability, licensing, app channels, and network access.
Sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft with your work or school account.
On the home page, scroll to the bottom and look under your name for Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic), or M365 Copilot (Premium).
If the label is there and Copilot still is missing, your admin needs to confirm your Microsoft 365 license, Microsoft Entra ID account, Microsoft 365 Apps deployment, privacy settings, OneDrive access where required, and network access to Microsoft 365 and Copilot endpoints.
In desktop apps, ask your admin to check the update channel by opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and selecting File > Account.
If Product Information shows Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, Microsoft documents two behaviors and which one you get depends on the build installed. Microsoft's Copilot support pages still state that Copilot features are not available on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel and tell admins to move the device to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. Microsoft's channel-unification guidance adds that, starting with the Version 2606 release in July 2026, devices configured for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel receive that update through their existing update process with no channel migration, reinstallation, or policy change required; afterwards they show as Monthly Enterprise Channel in File > Account and become eligible for Copilot if the user meets the other requirements. In practice: let Version 2606 or later install first, and treat a manual channel change as optional cleanup, or as the fix when the device is being held back on an older build.
For Outlook, Copilot supports primary mailboxes hosted on Exchange Online, and it also works in a user's archive mailbox and in shared and delegate mailboxes they have access to. Copilot is not available on group mailboxes.

Yes. In-app Copilot experiences require an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license. On a work or school account, Copilot Chat inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint requires an M365 Copilot (Basic) or M365 Copilot (Premium) label. Personal Microsoft accounts do not use those labels: access comes from a qualifying Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription, and in the desktop apps only the subscription owner can use Copilot.
Why does Copilot in Excel ask for OneDrive or AutoSave?
For Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium, Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave to be on and the workbook saved to OneDrive.
Does uninstalling the Windows Copilot app remove Copilot from Office?
