To fix eBay checkout not working, check your existing order, correct payment and delivery details, then reopen checkout or try another browser or the eBay app. A card decline needs a payment fix, while a blank or frozen checkout needs browser or app troubleshooting. Before submitting payment again, inspect the order in Purchase history, because a pending bank authorization alone does not confirm a completed purchase.

The short version

  • Check the order: Inspect the existing purchase before retrying payment.
  • Fix payment details: Match your card information and billing address to your card statement.
  • Change the checkout route: Reopen the purchase through your account or switch between the website and app.
  • Follow the error: Resolve payment declines with the provider and account restrictions through eBay’s notice.

Check your order and reopen checkout

Open Purchase history and inspect the purchase you were trying to complete. For an existing purchase that still needs payment, select Pay Now. You can also select Complete purchase in the order confirmation email.

For items still in your cart, select Go to checkout. Review the selected item, delivery address, shipping option, and payment method before submitting. Reopen the existing purchase when payment is still required.

If checkout fails across browsers or devices, check eBay’s System Status board for incidents or scheduled maintenance. If checkout is affected, retry after service is restored. Availability can vary by region.

For a blank or stalled page in Chrome, use Reload this page. If the page still fails to load, fully close the browser through More > Exit on Windows or Chrome > Quit Google Chrome on Mac. Reopen eBay and inspect the order before another payment attempt.

Resolve address and account blocks

At checkout, select Change beside the shipping address and choose an existing address or Add a new address. Review the selected item and shipping option before paying. Re-enter any payment information placed in the wrong fields.

For incorrect account contact information, open My eBay > Account > Personal information. Select Edit beside the information that needs correcting, then enter the correction. Finish with the displayed Save, Submit, or Confirm control.

When eligible items from the same seller need a combined shipping total, select Request combined shipping in the cart. Choose the eligible items, wait for the seller’s invoice, then check the revised shipping charge before paying. Invoice requests are controlled by the seller and cannot be used for immediate-payment listings and some other orders.

For a buying limit or account restriction, read the notice in your My eBay messages and follow its instructions. You may need to pay outstanding purchases, add a payment method, or verify your identity. Resolve a seller block with the seller, since clearing browser data cannot remove it.

Correct card details and payment declines

Re-enter the card number, expiration date, and security code in their correct fields. Match the cardholder name and billing address to your card statement. Check the billing address separately from the delivery address.

To correct a saved card, open My eBay > Payments. Under Payment options, select Edit beside the card, make the correction, then select Save. Choose +Add payment option to add a replacement card.

Check that the card is active, has not expired, has enough available funds, and has not reached its daily transaction limit. Contact the card issuer for activation or an unresolved decline. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same declined payment.

If the card still fails, check the listing’s Shipping and Payments section and choose another payment method offered at checkout. Availability depends on the transaction, category, and country. eBay does not accept American Express directly on ebay.com, so choose another accepted method if that is the card you entered.

For UK card payments, complete the issuer’s additional identity check, such as a password or SMS code prompt. Keep your contact details with the payment provider current so you can receive its authentication messages. Contact the provider if you cannot complete its prompt.

Resolve PayPal or Klarna problems

For a PayPal failure, sign in to PayPal and check your saved payment details. Choose another funding source, then return to the existing eBay checkout. If payment still fails, select another accepted method and tell the seller if payment will be delayed.

Follow any PayPal account prompts to resolve limitations or confirm your email, bank account, or identity. Use Confirm Card when PayPal requests card confirmation. For a saved-account connection problem, eBay recommends unlinking and relinking PayPal through the wallet in My eBay; the available controls depend on your account.

For Klarna, check your order’s eligibility along with your personal and payment details. For US buyers on ebay.com, eligible orders must be in USD, total $35 to $30,000, and ship from and to the US. Excluded categories and mixed delivery methods can prevent availability, so try checking out one item at a time for a multi-item order.

An older eBay app can also prevent Klarna from being available, so update it before trying again. If Klarna declines the application and returns you to eBay, choose another payment method. Use another method when the order does not qualify.

Check coupons and gift cards

For a rejected coupon, check the spelling, expiration date, prior use, eligible items, required payment method, and account eligibility. Also check your delivery information, including the telephone number, and any redemption limits. The promotion’s terms determine whether the code applies to your purchase.

Enter the coupon in Add coupons and select Apply. Only one coupon or offer is allowed per purchase. If the code does not meet the promotion’s conditions, correct the qualifying details or continue without that offer.

For an existing eBay gift card, enter the redemption code in Gift cards and coupons, then select Apply. Cover any remaining total with another accepted payment method. A previously used gift card stays tied to the eBay account that first used it.

Allow up to four hours for gift-card activation, then check the balance at checkout or in My eBay > Payments. Use the original US-registered account with a US delivery address and check the redemption limits. Remove ineligible purchases from the gift-card order, including bullion, money, coupons, and other gift cards.

Fix checkout in your browser

Try a different current browser or device, or switch between the desktop website, mobile website, and eBay app. Sign in to the same account and reopen the existing purchase. If checkout works there, focus further troubleshooting on the original browser.

eBay identifies outdated browser security as a possible payment blocker. In desktop Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome and let it check for updates. Select Relaunch if offered to finish the update.

To check a separate Chrome session, open More > New Incognito window and sign in to eBay. If checkout loads there, your normal browser profile’s data or extensions may be involved. Incognito blocks third-party cookies by default, so failure in that window does not settle the cause.

Reset the normal session by signing out of eBay and clearing its stored site data. In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions. Search for eBay, use the deletion control beside the matching site, confirm, then sign back in and reopen checkout.

For a broader Chrome reset, open More > Delete browsing data. Choose All time, select Cookies and other site data and the category for cached images and files, then select Delete data. Deleting cookies can sign you out of other websites, so sign back in to eBay afterward.

On iPhone, clear Safari website data through Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data > Remove Now. This preserves browsing history but removes website data and saved sessions. Sign back in to eBay and reopen the existing purchase.

On Mac, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select eBay’s stored data, then choose Remove. Sign back in and reopen checkout.

To check for an interfering extension in Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn extensions off and check whether checkout loads, then re-enable them individually to identify the interfering extension. Use Remove for the extension causing the failure.

For Safari loading failures on iPhone or iPad, enable JavaScript under Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced. Try cellular data or another Wi-Fi network, and check whether an enabled VPN causes the failure. These steps address page loading; an issuer’s card decline still requires a payment fix.

Recover an unresponsive eBay app

Close and reopen eBay when the app stops responding. On a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause, find eBay, then swipe its preview upward. On a Home-button iPhone, double-click Home and swipe eBay’s preview upward before reopening it.

On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > eBay > Force stop > OK, then reopen eBay. Other Android phones can use different settings paths. If reopening does not help, update the app.

On Android, open Google Play Store, select your profile icon, then open Manage apps & devices and update eBay under Updates available. On iPhone or iPad, open App Store, select your profile icon, then open App Updates and install the eBay update. Apple recommends checking for an operating-system update when no app update is available.

For a persistent Pixel app failure, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > eBay > Storage & cache and select Clear cache. If necessary, use Clear storage or Clear data and confirm. Clearing data removes local app state and requires signing in again.

If the Android app remains unusable, touch and hold eBay and select Uninstall. Reinstall it from its official Google Play listing, then sign in and reopen the purchase. Reinstallation resets local app data.

On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold eBay, then select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Redownload it from its official App Store listing, then sign in and reopen the purchase. Deletion can erase local app data.

Report an unresolved checkout failure

For an unresolved failure, take a screenshot of the error to capture its exact wording. Open Help & Contact and sign in for personalized help and recent orders. Enter the checkout error in Search with AI and follow the assistance options for your account and issue.

In the eBay app, shake your device to reveal reporting options, enabling Shake to Report in app settings first if needed. Alternatively, open the upper-right three-dot menu and select Help & Report when available. Contact options depend on the issue, region, account, and availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use guest checkout if your eBay account checkout fails?

You can use guest checkout for eligible new fixed-price purchases below $5,000 with a supported guest payment method. Select Buy It Now, then Check out as guest, enter your delivery, email, and payment information, and complete payment. Auctions and Best Offers require an account.

Can you split an eBay payment between two cards?

You may be offered payment splitting for eligible USD purchases of at least $500 using two eligible saved cards. Enable Split payment between two cards, select the cards, assign the first card’s amount, and save. The remainder goes to the second card; PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay cannot be used for this split.

Will adding a backup payment method fix a pending transaction?

Adding or changing an eligible backup payment method applies to future transactions and does not change pending transactions. You can enable backup use in My eBay or when adding an eligible payment method during checkout.

Are existing eBay gift cards still usable after digital gift card sales ended?

You can still redeem existing eBay gift cards even though digital gift-card sales ended September 24, 2026. You do not need a PayPal account to redeem an eBay gift card directly at checkout.

Can iCloud Private Relay interfere with Safari checkout?

A website can fail to load while Private Relay is enabled. To check the affected site on iPhone or iPad, open Safari’s Page Menu and select Show IP Address; on Mac, choose View, then Reload and Show IP Address. This exposes your IP address to the website for that check.
