To fix Canva links not working, correct the destination attached to the element and, for downloaded designs, export a PDF with Flatten PDF unchecked. PNG, JPG, MP4, and flattened PDFs do not retain working hyperlinks. For presentations, open links in presentation mode; for links to another Canva design, give recipients access to the destination.

The short version

  • Downloaded designs: Export an unflattened PDF to keep hyperlinks working.
  • Wrong destination: Select the linked text and choose Edit link to correct it.
  • Presentations: Use Present, and open video hyperlinks in the Presenter window.
  • Access errors: Check the destination design’s sharing permissions and the account opening it.
  • Text effects: Apply Canva’s specific workaround for linked text using Lift or Neon.

Fix the download format

If links stop working after download, open Share > Download and select PDF under File type. Under Presets, choose Digital, uncheck Flatten PDF, and select Download.

If your account displays PDF Standard and PDF Print instead, open Share > Download and select either option. Uncheck Flatten PDF, then select Download.

Uploading the design as a social media image cannot preserve its embedded hyperlinks. If an unflattened PDF still has a broken link, check the attached destination and any text effects next.

Correct the destination attached to the element

Select the linked text and choose Edit link. Correct the destination in Enter a link or search, then select Done.

Removing the existing hyperlink removes that destination from the element. To recreate it, select the linked element, choose Edit link, and select the Trash icon. Select the element again, open More > Link, enter the destination, and press Enter.

For navigation within a design, select the element and open More > Link. Choose the destination under Pages in this document, or use Recent to link to another design. Recipients need access to any separate Canva design you link.

On a Mac, select the intended text or element and press Command + K to add a link. On Windows, select it and press Ctrl + K.

If Canva displays the You are about to leave Canva notice, check that the destination is the website you intended. Select Continue to external site to proceed through this ordinary external-link notice.

For a Canva presentation, select Present and choose a presentation mode. If that control is inside the sharing menu, open Share > Present instead.

For hyperlinks attached to videos, use a computer and choose Presenter view. Activate the hyperlink in the Presenter window of this two-window view.

Canva provides specific workarounds for hyperlinks on text using Lift or Neon in downloaded PDFs. Apply the matching correction, then download the design with Flatten PDF unchecked.

For Lift, select the linked text and choose Effects > Lift. Select Curve in Effects and set its value to 0. Reposition the text if it moved, then download an unflattened PDF.

For Neon, select the linked text, apply Effects > Neon, and select Duplicate on the floating toolbar. On the duplicate, choose Effects > None, add the hyperlink, and set Transparency to 1. Position the duplicate over the Neon text, then download an unflattened PDF. Keep the transparency value at 1, as Canva specifies.

Restore access to the destination design

In the destination design, select Share and enter the intended recipient’s email under People with access. Choose the required permission and select Share. You can also reach these controls from the homepage through the design thumbnail’s More > Share menu.

For a destination you deliberately want to make public, choose Access level > Anyone with the link, choose view permission, and select Copy link. Account or organization policies may restrict public sharing; if they do, ask your administrator to review the restrictions.

For a Forbidden (403) error, use the account and team that were granted access. From the homepage, select your profile icon, open Accounts, and choose the correct account. Open More first if the profile icon is hidden. If you still need permission, ask the design owner to grant access.

For an inactive custom canva.link URL, open More > Projects > Manage Links on an eligible Pro, Business, or Enterprise plan. If the destination design still exists, open it, select Share, and create a fresh sharing link. Copy it and replace the old destination in your design.

If the destination design was deleted, open Projects > Trash > Designs from the homepage. Select the design and choose Restore. Self-service restoration is available during the 30-day Trash period unless the item was removed earlier. If it has already left Trash, contact Canva Support promptly because Canva describes a possible additional 14-day recovery window for designs.

For a deleted template link, open the source design and select Share > Template link, choosing See all first if needed. Select Create template link > Copy, then replace the inactive URL wherever you distributed it. The replacement has a different URL; Canva lists Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofits as eligible for template-link creation.

For Enterprise or Education sharing restrictions, ask an authorized administrator to open the account profile, then Settings > Permissions > Share and publish. They should review Who can share designs externally via links? and Who can share designs to external emails?, then select the appropriate permitted group. Choosing Everyone disables these restrictions in the single-team or single-school workflow. Changes across multiple teams or schools may require the administrator to contact support.

Fix website publishing and destination addresses

Open your Canva Website design and select Preview to check its links. Return to the editor and publish the website. To review the publishing destination first, open the website’s publishing Settings.

For other design types, the publishing entry point is Share > See all > Website. These designs can open as presentations or video players, so use a Website design when you want a scrolling site.

If a Canva-hosted website returns a 404 error, check that it is published at the address used in your link. Correct the subpath in its publishing settings, or leave it empty to publish at the main domain. For a custom domain, verify the domain with its provider and allow up to 72 hours for pending DNS.

If DNS remains unresolved, the next step removes the existing domain connection request. Remove that request in Settings, then reconnect the domain through the website publishing workflow.

Fix access from signatures and printed designs

For an email signature, download the signature artwork and each social icon separately as JPG or PNG. Insert them as separate images in your email signature, then assign each image its destination using your email client’s linking controls. The exact menus vary by email client, and links attached in Canva do not survive the image export.

For paper, PNG, or JPG output, add a static QR code that readers can scan. Select Elements, search for QR code, and select Create static. Enter the destination in URL, select Save, and place the code in the design. Static QR codes are available on all plans, but their destinations cannot be edited.

Fix browser and desktop app loading problems

If Canva itself has loading or interface problems, try the same design in an updated Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge browser. In desktop Chrome, select More > New Incognito window, open Canva, and check the link. Canva recommends private browsing when browser plugins interfere with loading.

Deleting browser data removes cookies and other site data for the time range you choose. In desktop Chrome, select More > Delete browsing data, choose the time range, and select Cookies and other site data. Select Delete data, then reopen Canva and sign in again. Canva also recommends clearing your browser cache for browser loading problems.

If the desktop app fails, try the browser. To open the app from Canva’s browser interface, select your profile icon, choose Open in desktop app, and select Open Canva app.

When the Windows or Mac app offers an update, select Update App in its top corner, then select Update Canva App. Canva closes and relaunches after updating.

If the Windows desktop app remains faulty, reinstalling removes the Canva app from your PC. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Canva, and select More > Uninstall. Complete the displayed uninstaller, then open Canva’s official Windows download page, select Download Canva for Windows, and reinstall.

On macOS, quit Canva before reinstalling it. Moving Canva to Trash removes the app from Applications. If Canva has no dedicated uninstaller, open Finder > Applications, select Canva, and choose File > Move to Trash. Open Canva’s official Mac download page, select Download Canva for Mac, and reinstall.

Check service and network failures

When multiple designs or links fail, open Canva Status and check the affected service and active incidents. If Canva reports an incident matching your problem, retry after it is resolved.

For connection-related loading failures, use a stable internet connection. If you use a VPN, turn it off, turn it back on, and retry Canva. Close unused background applications and tabs.

On a restricted school, workplace, or home network, ask the network administrator to review Canva’s firewall requirements and allow its main and short-link domains, Cloudflare security checks, and WebSocket connections to Canva on port 443. If you use Canva Apps, the administrator may also need to allow Canva Apps domains and the app provider’s domains. Firewall menus depend on the product.

If the failure continues, open Canva’s Contact Canva Support page and select Log in. Provide the affected design, destination URL, export format, and steps that reproduce the problem through the authenticated support flow. Include whether the failure occurs in the editor, presentation, website, or downloaded file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you add a working link in a Canva Sheets cell?

Select the text inside the cell rather than the whole cell. Select Link on the floating toolbar and enter the destination.

How do you fix a dynamic QR code destination or expiry?

Select the dynamic QR code, choose Edit, correct URL, and select Save. If the code has expired, review its expiry date and time in the left panel. The creator can turn on Allow collaborators to edit so other design editors can maintain it. Expiry and collaborator-edit controls require Business, Enterprise, or Nonprofit eligibility.

Why does embedded content fail in an offline Canva presentation?

Embedded content is unavailable offline. Restore your device’s internet connection and reopen the presentation so embedded YouTube videos, Spotify links, and Canva designs can load.

How do you update the destination of a published Canva Code website?

Open the original Canva Code thread, make the correction, select Publish again, and wait for Live. Find its URL under Admin Settings > Domains. Publishing through Use in a design creates a separate URL. If the original code thread was deleted, recreate the site and replace the old URL.

What can you do when an oversized Canva Code site will not publish?

In the same Canva Code chat, enter Please simplify this website and reduce oversized widgets/components so it can publish in Canva. After generation, select Publish again. Use this prompt for publishing failures caused by oversized widgets or complexity.

Can a subscription change affect a custom Canva short link?

Custom short links can disappear when their subscription ends. Autogenerated links remain tied to the active design.

Do recipients need a paid plan to open a template link?

Canva requires recipients who share the creator’s work-email domain to have a paid plan. General email domains and recipients in external organizations are treated differently, so that requirement does not apply uniformly to every recipient.
