To fix “Failed to initialize CAPTCHA” in Epic Games, retry in a private browser window, disconnect an active VPN or proxy, and try another internet connection before clearing cached data. Check Epic’s service status first, because a sign-in outage may require waiting. Retry after each change to see whether it resolves the error.
Sign in only through Epic Games’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. The launcher cache steps apply to Launcher Preview, which has a built-in clearing control. The Windows settings steps use Windows 11 menus.
The short version
- Check service status: Wait and retry if an Epic incident affects sign-in.
- Try a private window: Open Epic’s website in a fresh private browser session.
- Test your connection: Disconnect an active VPN or proxy, then try another network if needed.
- Clear affected data: Remove browser data or use Launcher Preview’s cache control if earlier fixes fail.

Check whether Epic services are affected
Open Epic Games Public Status and inspect incidents affecting Epic Games Store login and Epic Online Services authentication. If an incident affects sign-in, wait for its resolution and then try again. Save the browser and launcher changes for after the incident is resolved.
Epic also recommends waiting and trying later for temporary CAPTCHA failures. If no listed incident affects sign-in and a later attempt still fails, continue with a fresh browser session.
Try a private window or another device
Open Epic’s website in a private window and retry the same account. This gives you another browser session to try before deleting data from your regular one. Follow the steps for your browser.
In desktop Chrome, select More > New Incognito window. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows or Command + Shift + N on Mac. Chrome still blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito, so a failed private attempt does not rule out a cookie restriction.
In desktop Edge, select Settings and more > New InPrivate window. On Edge for Android or iOS, open the menu and select New InPrivate tab. Open Epic’s website in the new window or tab and retry. If family or organization policies disable InPrivate, try Epic’s website on another device instead.
In desktop Firefox, open the menu and select New private window. In Safari on Mac, choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift + Command + N. Open Epic’s website in that window and retry.
You can also open Epic’s website on another computer or mobile device and sign into the same account. If a purchase or free-game claim fails in the launcher, retry through the Store website in a browser. A successful website session gives you another way to complete that task, but it does not automatically repair launcher authentication.
Disconnect interfering services and try another network
Disconnect your active VPN and disable any proxy, hosting service, or network accelerator you use, then retry Epic. Use the controls supplied by that application’s vendor, since the labels differ between applications. This check applies to both browser and launcher failures.
If the error continues, switch to another internet connection, such as mobile data or a phone hotspot. Keep using the same Epic account so you can see whether the failure follows the original connection. Note the result for support if later fixes do not help.
Clear the affected browser data
Clearing cookies removes saved website data and can sign you out. Start with Epic’s site data when your browser provides the specific procedure below. Use the broader cookie and cache clearing option if needed, then retry Epic.
In desktop Chrome, select More > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions. Search for Epic’s website, select Delete beside the matching site, and select Delete again. Open Epic and retry.
A broader Chrome cleanup deletes cookies and cached files for the selected period and can sign you out of websites. On desktop Chrome, select More > Delete browsing data and choose All time. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data.
On Chrome for Android, the cleanup also removes the selected cookies and cached files and can sign you out. Select More > Delete browsing data > More options, choose the duration, and select Cookies and site data and Cached images and files. Select Delete data, then retry Epic.
Clearing Edge cookies and cache removes that website data for your selected time range and can sign you out. In desktop Edge, select Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. Beside Clear browsing data now, select Choose what to clear and choose a Time range covering the problem. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Clear now.
The following Firefox cleanup deletes temporary cached files and pages. In desktop Firefox, open the menu and select History > Clear Recent History…, then set When: to Everything. Select Temporary cached files and pages, leave unrelated categories unselected, and select Clear. This clears cache rather than cookies.
Removing Epic’s Safari website data deletes its cookies and cache and can sign you out. On Mac, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select the affected Epic website, select Remove, then select Done. Reopen Epic in a non-private window.
Check blockers and browser permissions
hCaptcha says aggressive blockers can interfere with its cookies. If you use an ad-blocking, privacy, script-blocking, or VPN extension in desktop Chrome, select More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off the suspected extension and retry Epic to check whether it is involved.
If Chrome shows that third-party cookies are blocked on the affected Epic page, select Third-party cookies blocked in the address bar. Turn on Third-party cookies, then select Close to reload. Try this when cookies are blocked; it does not mean every Epic CAPTCHA requires third-party cookies.
For a desktop Firefox page affected by tracking protection, select the shield beside the address bar and turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection. Firefox reloads the page so you can retry. Restore protection if the exception does not help. Mozilla provides this as a check for broken websites, so it may not resolve Epic’s CAPTCHA error.
In Safari on Mac, when advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection affects the page, choose View > Reload Reducing Privacy Protections. Retry the CAPTCHA after the page reloads.
If JavaScript has been blocked in desktop Chrome, select More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Javascript > Sites can use Javascript. Reload Epic and retry. hCaptcha loads a JavaScript component, so restoring JavaScript is relevant when it was disabled.
Update your browser and operating system
In desktop Chrome, select More > Help > About Google Chrome and let the update check finish. If an update provides a Relaunch button, select it. Retry Epic after Chrome reopens.
For Mozilla-distributed Firefox on Windows, open the menu and select Help > About Firefox; some versions label the menu Help and Report. On Mac, choose Firefox > About Firefox. Allow the update to download, then select Restart to update Firefox. Linux installations managed by a distribution’s package manager update through that distribution.
In desktop Edge, enter edge://settings/help in the address bar and let the update check run. Complete any offered update or restart, then try Epic again.
Safari updates with macOS. On a Mac using the current System Settings interface, choose the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install the compatible update offered. You can also search for Software Update with Spotlight and open it; available updates depend on your Mac model.
Epic includes operating-system updates among its CAPTCHA troubleshooting recommendations. On Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for Windows updates. Select Download & install when updates are offered, then restart if requested.
Clear or update Launcher Preview
Clearing Launcher Preview’s cache removes its cached data. Select the Epic Games Logo at the top left, then open Settings > About. Under Cached data, select Clear and restart, then retry sign-in after the launcher restarts.
This cache control applies specifically to Launcher Preview. If you are using the legacy launcher, continue with the website alternative or contact Epic for help with that version.
Launcher Preview also has an update check under the Epic Games Logo > Settings > About. Beside Version, select Check now. Updating is a general launcher troubleshooting step, so it may not resolve a CAPTCHA failure by itself.
Contact Epic if the error continues
Open Epic Games Store Support and select Contact us or select Epic Support Assistant. Describe the exact error, your affected browser or launcher version, and whether another device or network works. Follow the sign-in and escalation prompts presented by the support flow.
Support may also be affected during an outage, so retry later if an incident prevents you from reaching it. If you get past the CAPTCHA but your security code does not arrive, follow the steps for Epic Games security codes not arriving. That is a separate sign-in problem from the CAPTCHA failing to initialize.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does private browsing turn off every browser extension?
Private browsing may retain extensions you explicitly permitted to run there. A failed private session therefore does not rule out extension interference.
Can hCaptcha accessibility options fix an initialization error?
hCaptcha’s in-widget accessibility option is selected from the widget’s menu, so it needs a widget that has loaded. If a loaded hCaptcha widget offers the option, eligible users can select Accessibility Challenge from its menu. Availability depends on the site enabling the feature.
Should you reinstall Epic Games Launcher for this error?
Keep reinstalling as a last-resort general launcher repair, since it is not a guaranteed CAPTCHA fix. Epic warns that its Windows reinstall process removes installed games. Contact Epic support if the targeted checks fail before moving to that broader repair.
What if Epic works on a hotspot but fails on a managed network?
Give your network administrator the failing page, exact error, and hotspot result. If the page uses hCaptcha, ask the administrator to investigate blocked CAPTCHA resources. hCaptcha says its requirements cover scripts, frames, styles, and connections, and warns against allowing only one fixed asset subdomain.
Can you clear an existing Firefox private session?
In Firefox 151 or later, you can discard a problematic private session using the fire icon beside the address bar. Clearing it discards the existing private session. Select the fire icon, then select Clear private session before retrying Epic.
