To change a SharePoint site name, open the site, select Settings > Site information, edit Site name, and select Save. This works for modern team sites and communication sites in SharePoint in Microsoft 365 when you have owner or designer permissions. Changing the displayed name is separate from changing the site's web address.

The short version

  • Modern sites: Edit Site name under Settings > Site information, then select Save.
  • Classic settings: Edit Title through Title, description, and logo in Site Settings.
  • Permissions: The site settings methods require owner or designer permissions.
  • Different names: Translated names, the site address, and the tenant domain have separate controls.

Change the name in modern SharePoint

Open your modern team site or communication site in a browser using an account with owner or designer permissions. Select Settings, then choose Site information. Edit the required Site name field and select Save.

Use classic site settings

For a Microsoft 365 site that exposes classic settings, open Settings > Site Settings. Under Look and Feel, select Title, description, and logo. Edit Title, then select OK.

This path requires Owner or Design permissions. Use it when your site exposes Site Settings rather than the modern site information controls.

Open the site from Microsoft Teams

For a Teams-connected SharePoint site, open the channel and select Shared > More commands > Open in SharePoint. In the opened site, select Settings > Site information, edit Site name, and select Save. Your SharePoint permissions still determine whether you can make the change.

Microsoft renamed the channel Files tab to Shared in January 2026. If you can't find Open in SharePoint, open the SharePoint site directly in a browser and follow the modern site settings steps.

Fix an old name in another language

On a Microsoft 365 site that supports multilingual site names, open the homepage and select Settings > Site information. Under Site name, select Translate site name. Add or edit the names for the available languages, select OK, then select Save.

An incorrect translation can cause an old name to appear after you change the default name, so edit that translation to match. Microsoft excludes sites connected to a Microsoft 365 Group from site-name and description translation. For those sites, use the default site-name controls.

Fix missing editing permissions

If your account lacks owner or designer permissions, have someone with the required permissions make the change. Opening the site through Teams still requires the appropriate SharePoint permissions.

With administrative access, you can also change the displayed name in the SharePoint admin center. Select Sites > Active sites and select the site's name to open its details panel. From that panel, you can change site properties such as the site name.

If you cannot find those administrative controls, open the site itself and use Settings > Site information with owner or designer permissions. An account with the required site permissions can use that route to edit the displayed name.

Set up PowerShell to change a title

For Windows administration of SharePoint Online, get the SharePoint Online Management Shell from Microsoft. Select the appropriate language, select Download, and follow the installation instructions on that page.

As an authorized SharePoint administrator, connect the shell to your tenant administration endpoint. In this connection command, replace OLD-URL with your actual tenant administration endpoint:

Connect-SPOService -Url OLD-URL

Then run Set-SPOSite to change the site collection title. In this command, replace OLD-URL with the site's actual URL and replace New site name with your chosen title:

Set-SPOSite -Identity OLD-URL -Title "New site name"

If you use current PnP.PowerShell, you can instead change the SharePoint Online web title with Set-PnPWeb. You need sufficient site permissions and an appropriately configured Microsoft Entra application. Connect with the following command, replacing OLD-URL with the site URL and YOUR-APP-ID with your application's ID:

Connect-PnPOnline -Url OLD-URL -Interactive -ClientId YOUR-APP-ID

After connecting, run the following command to change the web title. Replace New site name with the title you want:

Set-PnPWeb -Title "New site name"

Change the site address separately

To change a site-specific URL, you need SharePoint Administrator permissions and an eligible SharePoint Online site. Before using the admin center or PowerShell method, check the eligibility restrictions in Microsoft's Change a site address guide; a URL change creates a redirect and temporarily makes the site read-only. The address operation covers eligible group-connected team sites, non-group modern team sites, communication sites, and classic team sites. It changes the site-specific URL, not the tenant domain or the /sites versus /teams portion.

Open the SharePoint admin center, select Active sites, and select the site's name. On General, under Site address, select Edit. Enter the new site address and select Save.

For the PowerShell method, connect through SharePoint Online Management Shell using the Connect-SPOService command above with your tenant administration endpoint. First validate the operation with the following command, replacing OLD-URL with the current site URL and NEW-URL with the intended site URL:

Start-SPOSiteRename -Identity OLD-URL -NewSiteUrl NEW-URL -ValidationOnly

After validation succeeds, choose the command that matches your intended change. To change only the address, run it without -ValidationOnly:

Start-SPOSiteRename -Identity OLD-URL -NewSiteUrl NEW-URL

To change the address and title together, use the following command instead. Replace New site name with your chosen title as well as substituting the actual site URLs:

Start-SPOSiteRename -Identity OLD-URL -NewSiteUrl NEW-URL -NewSiteTitle "New site name"

Rename the organization domain

A tenant domain rename changes organization-wide SharePoint and OneDrive domains rather than individual displayed site titles. Before starting, review Microsoft's eligibility requirements for your tenant. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Domains, select your existing .onmicrosoft.com default domain, and select Add onmicrosoft domain to add the intended new domain. Don't use the general Add domain option on the Domains page, because it doesn't create a .onmicrosoft.com domain. Don't make the new domain your fallback domain, and confirm it appears in a Healthy state on the Domains page before you continue.

Connect through SharePoint Online Management Shell using Connect-SPOService with your existing tenant administration endpoint, as shown above. Then run the following command, replacing NEWTENANT with the new domain prefix and YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS with an actual scheduled time. Schedule it at least 24 hours ahead and no more than 30 days ahead:

Start-SPOTenantRename -DomainName "NEWTENANT" -ScheduledDateTime "YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS"

Manage prefixes suffixes and blocked words

For Microsoft 365 group-connected naming workflows, including SharePoint, you can configure a naming policy with the appropriate Microsoft Entra administrative role and licensing. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center and select Microsoft Entra ID > All groups > Groups > Naming policy. Select Group naming policy, edit the prefixes or suffixes, and select Save.

To manage prohibited words, select Blocked words and update the list. Upload the updated list, then select Save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make another language use the default site name?

Yes, an empty site-name translation falls back to the default-language name on an eligible multilingual site. Removing a translation clears that language's custom name and makes it use the default name. In Translate site name, remove the incorrect translation, select OK, then select Save.

Is PnP PowerShell supported directly by Microsoft?

PnP PowerShell is community-maintained tooling with no direct Microsoft support or service-level agreement. If you require a Microsoft administrative tool for changing a site collection title, use SharePoint Online Management Shell.

Will a naming policy immediately rename existing sites?

No, configuring a naming policy does not immediately rename every existing site. The policy governs Microsoft 365 group names when groups are created or edited.

How large can a tenant be for a standard domain rename?

Standard tenant rename supports up to 10,000 combined sites, OneDrive accounts, and SharePoint Embedded containers. If your organization exceeds that combined total, you need Advanced Tenant Rename.

Can you rename a tenant domain with Multi Geo or a government cloud?

Government and special clouds are excluded from tenant domain rename. Tenants with current or previous Multi-Geo configurations are also excluded, so check your tenant's configuration history as well as its current setup.
