Canva puts templates, uploads, AI tools, text controls, sharing, printing, and downloads in one workspace, so the first session feels busy. The simplest way to use Canva is to open it in a supported place, start with a design type, replace the sample content, then export or share the finished file. Follow the steps below in that order and you will have a clean first design without chasing every tool in the editor.

1. Open Canva from the right app

Start on the web when you want the quickest route. Go to canva.com, sign in, and use a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari on macOS if Canva shows an unsupported-browser message.

  • On Windows, open Canva for Windows and select Download Canva for Windows. Canva lists Windows 10 and later.
  • On Mac, open Canva for Mac and select Download Canva for Mac. Canva supports Macs with Intel and Apple chips.
  • On iPhone or iPad, open Canva for iOS and use the App Store download option.
  • On Android, open Canva for Android and use the Google Play install option.

2. Choose a template or create a blank design

  1. 1.On mobile, tap Create.
  2. 2.Select Custom size.
  3. 3.Enter the Width and Height.
  4. 4.Tap Create new design.

If you already know the format, start from Canva's homepage. Use Quick Create for common design types, or open the Create tab when you want the full list of design options and tools.

Use a template when you want a ready-made layout. In the editor, open Templates, type what you want in the search bar, then press Enter. Template availability depends on plan and content rights.

3. Replace the sample content with your own

Uploads are the fastest way to make a template look like your project instead of Canva's sample. Open the design, select Uploads from the bottom toolbar, choose Upload files, then pick a source such as your device.

  • For text, tap the text box you want to change, tap Edit on the toolbar below the editor, then rewrite or delete the content. To add text on mobile, tap the page and start typing, or choose Text styles from the bottom editor toolbar.
  • For photos, graphics, and other elements, select the item and drag the resize handles in or out. To crop, select the item, choose Crop from the editor toolbar, adjust the crop, and keep the result that fits the design.

4. Use Canva AI when you need a first draft

  • To generate a design, tap Canva AI on the bottom navigation, select Design, enter a prompt describing the design you want, or upload media to guide the result, then tap the arrow to generate the design.
  • For voice input, use the same entry point. From the homepage's bottom navigation, tap Canva AI, enter a prompt, or tap the Microphone icon and speak the request.
  • For targeted changes inside the editor, select Ask Canva and request design edits, image generation, text rewrites, or design advice.
  • For copy, use Magic Write to generate text from a prompt or from existing text in your document.

Canva AI helps when the blank page is the problem. AI feature access depends on plan, region, age, and admin settings.

5. Resize the design and fix mistakes fast

Use object resizing for small fixes and Canva's resize tool when the whole design needs a different format.

For individual objects, select an image, text box, or element, then drag the resize handles until it fits the page.

For the whole design, select Resize, go to the Resize section, select Custom size, switch the Width and Height values or choose output sizes, then choose the resize or copy option Canva shows. Whole-design resizing is Canva's Magic Resize tool, which is included on paid plans such as Canva Pro and Teams and counts against your monthly AI usage.

  • When a change is wrong, click Undo next to Resize. Click Redo to bring it back. From a keyboard, use Cmd+Z on Mac or Ctrl+Z on Windows to undo.
  • For command search, click Quick actions, or press /, Cmd+E on Mac, or Ctrl+E on Windows, then type the tool or action you need.

6. Download share print or present the finished design

  • To download, select the Export icon from the top menu, choose Download, pick a file type, select All pages, This page, or Custom, then download. Canva also documents Share then Download. Premium or Pro elements need a Pro Content License or a paid plan for an unwatermarked download, though free users can download a watermarked draft first.
  • To share, open the design, select Share, choose an email invitation or set an access level and permission and then select Copy link. Designs are set to Only you can access by default.
  • To publish to social or messaging apps, connect the account in Canva, then publish, schedule, or manage posts from the editor.
  • To print at home or at the office, open the design, press Cmd+P on Mac or Ctrl+P on Windows, and the first time, choose Use my printer when Canva asks whether to print yourself or order prints. Select Continue, then choose the printer and settings in your computer's print window.
  • To order prints from Canva, go to the Canva homepage and select Print Shop (if you don't see it, open More), pick a product, tap Start designing, customize the design, then choose the supported print specifications and pages. Homepage navigation is still rolling out, so the exact placement can vary.
  • To present, use Present from the editor menu bar. To record, select Present, choose Present and record, select Go to recording studio, then select Start recording. Present and record is temporarily unavailable in India.

Pick the output based on what you need to do next.

7. Add apps only when they solve a job

  1. 1.To remove an app from your workspace, open Apps in the editor.
  2. 2.Go to Your apps.
  3. 3.Tap the app you want to remove.
  4. 4.Open the More menu.
  5. 5.Select Remove from your apps.

Canva apps add extra workflows such as importing media, editing images, connecting export platforms, and adding other tools to the editor. In the editor, open Apps, then choose or connect the app you want to use.

Remove connections when you no longer need them. Go to Account settings, open Connected accounts, click or tap Disconnect next to the app, then confirm. Disconnecting a linked social account also removes its scheduled posts, so check those first.

8. Clean up your account after a few projects

Canva's accessibility settings belong in your first-pass setup, especially if you edit often. Go to Account settings or Accessibility settings to use documented options for light and dark modes, video captions, video auto-play, alternative text support, and keyboard shortcuts.

  • Deleted designs stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent removal unless you permanently delete them sooner. To restore or delete a trashed item, open Trash, choose Designs, Images, or Videos, select the item, then choose Restore or Delete in the action bar and confirm.
  • To cancel a paid plan bought through Canva, use Canva's account or billing cancellation flow. For iPhone or iPad subscriptions, open iOS Settings, tap your name, choose Subscriptions, select Canva, tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm.
  • On work, school, and managed team accounts, admins control access to some AI features, apps, uploads, external sharing, publishing, brand controls, and design approvals. For personal projects, use a personal Canva account. For organization projects, ask the admin which features are enabled.

Ignore older tutorials that send you to Canva Product Photos, the Samsung Galaxy Store version, or LTI 1.1 LMS setup. Canva says Product Photos has been retired, Samsung users should use the Android app or the Windows and Mac desktop apps, and new Canva LMS integrations require LTI 1.3.
