To remove an unused printer from the current HP app, select the printer, scroll to the bottom of its page, and select Remove from app. This removes its app listing but does not remove the printer from your HP account or cancel Instant Ink. Your computer’s printer entry also needs separate removal if you want to clear it.
The short version
- Clear the app: Select the unwanted printer and choose Remove from app at the bottom of its page.
- Check subscriptions: Removing an app listing does not cancel Instant Ink.
- Remove account registration: Manage the printer through your HP account when you also want to remove its registration.
- Clean up your computer: Windows and macOS keep printer entries separately from the HP app.

Remove the printer from the HP app
Removing a printer here clears its listing from the app. Open the HP app, select the unwanted printer, and scroll to the bottom of its page. Select Remove from app.
These steps apply to the current HP app on supported Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, with availability varying by device and region. The older HP Smart interface differs from the current HP app. If you only want to clear the app listing, you can stop after removing it.
Cancel plans you no longer need
For an Instant Ink printer, account removal must wait until its final billing cycle ends. Removing the printer from the HP app does not cancel that subscription. Sign in only through HP’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.
Sign in to your Instant Ink account, then open Overview > Printer Details. Check the serial number to identify the correct printer before changing its plan.
Completing cancellation ends that printer’s Instant Ink subscription. Select HP Instant Ink > Update Plan, then scroll to Plan Details. Select Cancel my HP Instant Ink Subscription and complete the subsequent prompts.
If you subscribe to the HP All-in Plan for Print, cancellation requires returning the printer, and cancellation charges can apply. Open your HP account website, select Sign In, and sign in. Select your HP All-in Plan in the account menu, then select Overview. In the Plan Details section, select Cancel Plan. Select Confirm Cancellation, then follow the emailed return instructions.
Remove the printer from your HP account
Account removal removes the printer’s registration from your HP account. Sign in to your HP account and open Printers. Under the unwanted printer, select Printer Options, then Remove Printer. Select Remove to confirm.
If the account screen uses Manage Printer Settings, open Manage Printer Settings > Remove Printer instead, then select Remove. For an Instant Ink printer, wait until its final billing cycle has ended before removing it. The printer can take several hours to disappear from the account.
You can also reach account management from a signed-in HP app that offers dashboard links. Select the Account icon and choose Manage HP Account. In the dashboard, open Printers and select the unwanted printer.
Removing it through this dashboard removes its account registration. Select Printer Options or Manage Printer Settings, then select Remove Printer.
Remove the printer from Windows
Windows keeps its printer entry separately from the HP app and HP account. Removing that entry clears the printer from the operating system’s printer list. Choose the path for your Windows version.
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & scanners. Select the unwanted printer, then select Remove. Select Yes to confirm.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Select the unwanted printer, then select Remove device.
Remove the printer from your Mac
Removing a printer in macOS clears the Mac’s printer entry, separately from the HP app and account entries. Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners. Hold Control and click the unwanted printer, then choose Remove Printer. Click Remove Printer to confirm.
On macOS versions that offer printer management through Print Center, you can use that app as an alternative. This also removes the Mac’s printer entry. Open Applications > Utilities > Print Center, select the printer in the sidebar, then choose Printer > Remove Printer.
Remove unused Windows printer software
Uninstalling removes the selected HP printer software, which can also serve other HP printers. For Windows installations with HP printer software and the documented Control Panel interface, disconnect the printer first. Open Add or remove programs, select its HP software, then select Uninstall. If User Account Control appears, select Yes, finish uninstalling, and restart.
The next step removes any remaining device entries for that printer. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click the remaining entries for the unwanted printer and select Remove Device or Uninstall device.
Remove HP apps and software from your Mac
Uninstalling HP or HP Smart removes the entire application. Open Applications using Spotlight, then drag HP or HP Smart to the Trash. Right-click the Trash and select Empty Trash. Restart your Mac.
For broader HP software removal on a Mac using HP Easy Start, obtain that tool through HP’s setup page.
This procedure removes HP software broadly. Open HP Easy Start > Uninstall HP Software, then complete the removal wizard.
Remove Windows queues or drivers with PowerShell
On Windows systems with the PrintManagement module, you can remove a printer queue through PowerShell. Open Windows PowerShell and run the following command to identify the exact queue name.
Get-PrinterThe next command removes the named operating system printer queue, separately from its HP account registration. Replace the placeholder with the exact queue name before running it.
Remove-Printer -Name "Exact printer name"Microsoft says Remove-Printer does not require administrator credentials. For remote administration, the cmdlet also supports -ComputerName.
Driver cleanup is a separate operation on Windows systems with PrintManagement and requires administrator credentials. The following command removes the specified printer driver. Open an administrator PowerShell session, replace the placeholder with the unused driver’s exact name, and run the command.
Remove-PrinterDriver -Name "Exact driver name"Reset the physical printer before disposal
A factory reset is a separate disposal step from removing the app listing or account registration. These steps apply only to HP printers with the documented Embedded Web Server menus, which vary by model. Enter the printer’s IP address in a browser, then open Settings or System.
If requested, enter the PIN from the printer’s label; an HP LaserJet may also require the username admin. Select Submit or OK.
Restoring factory defaults resets the printer’s settings. For most supported models, locate Restore Defaults > Restore Factory Defaults or Factory, then select Restore Factory Defaults. Select Yes to confirm.
The documented LaserJet interface uses a different route to restore default settings. Select Service > Restore defaults, then select OK.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can you download the replacement for HP Smart?
Get the current HP app from HP’s official product page, which provides store links for iPhone and iPad, Mac, Android, and Windows. HP’s product page says HP Smart is no longer available for download, but HP’s setup guide still lists HP Smart for devices where the HP app is not available, such as Windows 10 32-bit.
How do you uninstall HP Smart or the HP app on Windows 11?
Uninstalling removes the entire application, rather than one unused printer. Search Windows for Add or remove programs and open it. Find HP or HP Smart, select its three-dot menu, then select Uninstall and complete the prompts.
How do you delete the HP app from an iPhone or iPad?
Deleting the HP app removes the entire application. Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, select Remove App, then select Delete App. Select Delete to confirm.
How do you uninstall the HP app on Android?
Uninstalling removes the whole app. On an Android device with Google Play, open Google Play Store, select the profile icon, then choose Manage apps & devices > Manage. Select the installed HP or HP Smart entry, then select Uninstall. Google notes that some of these instructions require Android 13 or later.
