Leaving a Slack workspace is not the same as closing the app, signing out, or uninstalling Slack. On Free, Pro, and Business+ workspaces, the normal way out is to deactivate that workspace account. On Slack Enterprise, members leave eligible non-default workspaces from the workspace switcher, while required workspaces need admin removal.
Deactivate your account in a regular Slack workspace
Use this path for individual workspace accounts on Slack Free, Pro, and Business+ plans.
On desktop or in a browser, go to https://my.slack.com/account.
Scroll to Deactivate account.
Click Deactivate your account.
Enter your password, then select Confirm Password.
Click Yes, deactivate my account.
Leave an Enterprise workspace you do not need
Click your workspace name in the Slack sidebar.
Select Join or leave workspaces.
In the browser workspace list, click the workspace you want to leave.
Click Leave this workspace. Slack removes that workspace icon from your app.
This works for non-default Enterprise workspaces, and guests cannot use this path.
Fix a missing Leave this workspace button
In Slack Enterprise, default workspaces and workspaces added through an identity provider group do not have a self-serve Leave this workspace route from the normal Join or leave workspaces page.
Contact a Workspace Owner, Workspace Admin, Org Owner, or Org Admin and ask to be removed from the workspace. If an identity provider group added you, ask the admin to remove you from the relevant group as well.
If that does not work, ask an owner or admin whether the workspace is required for your organization or whether your guest account must be removed by an admin.
Transfer ownership before you leave
Use this when Slack blocks deactivation because you are the Workspace Primary Owner. Slack requires the Workspace Primary Owner to transfer ownership before leaving by deactivating the account.
Visit Slack's transfer ownership page.
Search for and select the member who should become the new Workspace Primary Owner.
Enter your password, then click Transfer Workspace Ownership.
After the transfer is complete, go to https://my.slack.com/account.
Open Deactivate account, click Deactivate your account, confirm your password with Confirm Password, and choose Yes, deactivate my account.
Sign out when you only want Slack off your device
Signing out keeps your Slack membership in place, but it stops Slack from staying active on that device.
- 1.On desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar, select Sign out, then click Sign Out From Browser.
- 2.On iPhone or iPad, open the Home tab, swipe right, tap the three dots icon next to the workspace name, tap Sign Out, then confirm with Sign Out.
- 3.On Android, open the Home tab, swipe right, tap the three dots icon next to the workspace name, tap Sign out, then confirm with Sign Out.
Stop treating uninstall as leaving
The most common mistake is deleting the Slack app and assuming the workspace account is gone.
Uninstalling Slack only removes the app from your device. It does not deactivate your Slack account, remove you from a workspace, or change your membership.
Use https://my.slack.com/account to deactivate a regular workspace account.
Use Join or leave workspaces in Slack Enterprise when the workspace is not required.
Ignore old Slack menu paths
Older guides point to menu routes such as Profile & account, Customize workspace, or Account settings before deactivation. Slack's current self-deactivation route starts at https://my.slack.com/account, then goes to Deactivate account.
If that route fails, use Join or leave workspaces for an eligible Enterprise workspace, transfer ownership first if you are the Primary Owner, or contact an owner or admin for removal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave a Slack workspace from the mobile app?
Slack does not provide a current mobile app path for leaving or deactivating a workspace account. Use https://my.slack.com/account on desktop or in a browser, or use Join or leave workspaces from Slack desktop in an Enterprise organization.
Does deactivating my Slack account leave every workspace?
No. Slack treats each workspace account separately when you belong to more than one workspace, so deactivate the specific workspace account you want to leave.
Why can I leave one Enterprise workspace but not another?
Slack lets members leave non-default Enterprise workspaces. Default workspaces and workspaces added through an identity provider group require an owner or admin to remove you.
Can a Primary Owner leave without transferring ownership?
No. The Workspace Primary Owner must transfer ownership first. An Enterprise Org Primary Owner must use Slack's support form and include the new Org Primary Owner's email address.
