To fix Plex subtitles not working, manually select the correct subtitle track, check your language preferences, or replace a missing or faulty subtitle file. If the selected track stays invisible, adjust subtitle appearance or enable subtitle burn-in for your player. For subtitles that appear at the wrong time, adjust their timing or choose a replacement that matches your video edition.
The short version
- Start with selection: Choose a full-dialogue subtitle track on the movie or episode’s details screen.
- Check automatic selection: Set your preferred subtitle language and remember that saved manual choices override account defaults.
- Replace faulty files: Search inside Plex or add a correctly named local subtitle that matches the video.
- Separate display from timing: Use appearance or burn-in settings for invisible subtitles and offset controls for subtitles that arrive early or late.

Select the correct subtitle track
In Plex Web, open the movie or episode’s details page, select ▼ beside Subtitle, then choose the track you want. Other Plex players offer subtitle selection with different layouts. If subtitles appear only during occasional foreign-language dialogue, select a full-dialogue track instead of a forced-only track.
For Plex’s free, ad-supported Movies & Shows, check the title’s available subtitle tracks first. Availability depends on distributor-supplied content. If the hosted title has no subtitle track, personal-server filenames, agents and metadata refreshes cannot add one; use the support forum reporting route in Plex’s Free Movies & Shows FAQ for content or playback issues.
Correct automatic subtitle selection
For personal media, including shared libraries, open the user menu at the top right of Plex Web, choose Account Settings, then scroll to the Audio & Subtitle Settings section. Enable Automatically Select Audio and Subtitle Tracks, then choose your Preferred Audio Language and Preferred Subtitle Language. Set Auto-Select Subtitle Mode to Always Enabled or Shown with Foreign Audio, depending on when you want subtitles.
Previously saved manual choices override these defaults. For a movie or episode previously set to None, manually select its subtitle track. Each viewer must configure their own account, including viewers using a shared library.
As the server owner, you can also reach your linked account’s preferences through Settings > Server > Languages in Plex Web. These settings do not impose subtitle preferences on other accounts. Shared viewers should use their own Account Settings.
Find a replacement subtitle
On a movie or episode’s pre-play screen, open the subtitle selector and select More…, then choose a language and a search result. New-experience builds may call this search surface Find Subtitles. A star identifies a file-hash match; try another result if the first belongs to a different release. On-demand search requires personal movie or TV libraries, server 1.13.8.5395 or newer, and a supported player, including Web, mobile, major TV apps or desktop.
If filters exclude useful results, open Account Settings and scroll to the Audio & Subtitle Settings section. Under Hearing Impaired Subtitle (SDH) Searches, choose Prefer non-SDH subtitles (non-SDH at top of list) or Prefer SDH subtitles (SDH at top of list). Under Forced Subtitle Searches, choose Prefer non-forced subtitles or Prefer forced subtitles. These preferences avoid excluding results through an Only show filter.
Legacy OpenSubtitles metadata-agent fetching does not work with the current Plex Movie or Plex TV Series agents. Use on-demand search or local subtitle files instead.
On Android mobile or iOS, save a matching subtitle on your device. Open the personal-library item’s details or pre-play screen, open subtitle selection, select Import Subtitle File, then choose the saved file. Plex uploads and selects it.
Deleting an external subtitle removes its file immediately. If you need to remove a faulty file as the server administrator, open server Settings > Library, select Show Advanced, and enable Allow media deletion, then swipe left on that subtitle in the mobile subtitle selector. On iOS, select Delete; Android briefly offers UNDO after deletion. This works for externally added or searched subtitles, not embedded tracks.
Fix local subtitle filenames and discovery
For libraries using current Plex Movie or Plex TV Series agents, place the subtitle beside its video and match the video’s basename. Put Avatar (2009).en.srt beside Avatar (2009).mkv, for example. For episodes, retain the episode basename, such as Show - s01e03.en.srt, and use an ISO-639-1 or ISO-639-2/B language code.
With server 1.41.0 or newer and those agents, you can instead put correctly named files in a subs or subtitles folder inside the video directory. For a season, put that folder inside the relevant season directory. Current agents detect local subtitles automatically and do not require the legacy Local Media Assets checkbox.
Use a matching SRT, SMI, ASS/SSA or WebVTT subtitle, and save text subtitles with UTF-8 encoding to address garbled characters. Try a matching SRT when image-based PGS or VOBSUB subtitles cause compatibility or transcoding problems. Image-based subtitle compatibility varies by player.
Use Avatar (2009).en.forced.srt for foreign-dialogue-only subtitles. For hearing-impaired captions, use Avatar (2009).en.sdh.srt or Avatar (2009).en.cc.srt. These labels identify the track type; a forced-only file does not provide full dialogue.
After adding or correcting subtitle files, as server administrator, open the movie or episode in Plex Web, select …, then choose Refresh Metadata. For renamed or newly added media, open the library’s sidebar … menu and select Scan Library Files. To refresh the entire library, choose … > Manage Library > Refresh All Metadata.
On a Linux server or Linux-based storage, a missing subtitle may warrant checking file access, applying Plex’s general file-permission requirements to the subtitle. Have the administrator inspect the file and its parent directories, granting the Plex service account read access to the file and read/execute access to directories. Use ownership, group membership or chmod appropriate to the installation, then refresh the item.
Make selected subtitles easier to see
In Plex Web, open Settings > Web Client > Player, then adjust Subtitle Color, Subtitle Position and Subtitle Size. These controls apply to client-rendered text subtitles. Color and position changes do not affect server-burned subtitles.
On Android mobile, open Plex’s Settings > Subtitles, adjust Subtitle Color and Subtitle Size, and enable Subtitle Background if needed. If embedded styling causes the problem, enable Override Embedded Subtitle Style. These controls depend on the subtitle rendering mode.
On iOS, open the device’s Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning and choose or customize the subtitle style. In Plex’s Settings > Subtitles, adjust Subtitle Position if needed.
On Android TV, open Plex’s Settings > Subtitles and adjust Subtitle size, Subtitle color, Subtitle background and Subtitle position. On Apple TV, open Settings > Subtitles > Subtitles Size and choose a readable size. These controls apply to supported rendering modes.
Use subtitle burn in when rendering fails
Burning subtitles into the video can bypass client rendering problems, but your server must handle the resulting video transcode. In Plex Web, open Settings > Web Client > Player > Burn Subtitles, choose Always, then replay the item. If playback buffers, try Automatic or Only image formats with a compatible text subtitle.
On Android TV, open Settings > Video > Burn Subtitles and choose Always. Choose Automatic or Only image formats to reduce unnecessary burn-in when compatible. On supported Roku devices, open Plex’s Settings > Subtitles > Burn Subtitles and choose Always to burn the track into video, or Automatic to let Plex decide.
On Apple TV, open the avatar’s User Menu > Settings > Subtitles > Burn Subtitles. Choose Always for rendering problems, or Automatic or Only image formats when server performance is the concern. New-experience Android TV and Apple TV builds may arrange these settings differently; a compatible text subtitle is another option when image-based subtitles cause problems.
On Android mobile and iOS, open Plex’s Settings > Subtitles > Burn Subtitles and choose Automatic or Always. The Never option can prevent necessary burn-in. If the app incorrectly detects playback compatibility, open Video & Audio and disable Allow Direct Play.
If server restrictions block conversion, as administrator, open Settings, select the server, then open Transcoder > Show Advanced. Uncheck Disable video stream transcoding and retry the selected subtitle. This permits conversion without increasing server capacity. Configure each player separately, since Plex Web’s settings do not configure other apps.
Correct subtitles that are out of sync
For an external text subtitle that stays consistently early or late, open Playback Settings > Adjust Offsets during playback. Increase or decrease the offset in the app’s 50- or 100-millisecond increments. Resetting the offset returns it to zero. Select Reset if you want to discard that adjustment.
Offset controls support external text subtitles, not embedded or image-based tracks. Supported apps include Web, Fire TV, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, iOS, Windows and Mac desktop, HTPC, Xbox One and specified LG and Samsung TVs. If your track cannot use offsets, select or import a matching external text subtitle.
Automatic synchronization supports external SRT files, including on-demand subtitles, on supported server platforms running 1.41.0 or newer. The administrator needs Plex Pass, and the viewer needs Plex Pass or qualifying Plex Home membership. Supported players include Web, mobile, TV, desktop, HTPC and consoles.
As administrator, open server Settings > Library > Generate voice activity data, then choose as a scheduled task or as a scheduled task and when media is added. Open the library’s Edit Library > Advanced, enable Enable voice activity detection, and wait for analysis. During playback, open Playback Settings and enable Auto-Sync Subtitles.
If timing still fails, select or import a subtitle matching the exact theatrical, extended or other edition. Auto-sync may fail when timing differs by more than 30 seconds or varies inconsistently across the video. Replace malformed files rather than relying on synchronization to repair them.
Repair Plex HTPC subtitle controls
If your HTPC remote’s subtitle controls fail, copy the relevant default inputmap into the user inputmaps directory. Map the desired button to toggle_subtitles, cycle_subtitles, cycle_subtitles_back, increase_subtitles_delay or decrease_subtitles_delay. Save the JSON file and restart Plex HTPC. Use its logs to identify the actual button code, since mappings vary by input device.
Resetting Plex HTPC restores default settings and signs the app out. For this general settings fallback, open Settings > Advanced > Reset App. Sign back in and select the subtitle again.
Update Plex when the problem persists
Get current server and player software from the official Plex Downloads page. Choose Plex Media Server or Plex, select your platform, then use the installer or official store destination offered for your device. Updating can address software bugs, while file, selection and rendering problems need their corresponding fixes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Plex ignore an embedded subtitle in my preferred language?
Plex treats an unknown-language track as not matching your preferred language, and an MKV default flag does not determine automatic selection. Correct the embedded track’s language with a container-editing tool, then refresh the item in Plex. Plex names MKVToolNix as an example.
Can Plex rediscover local subtitle files automatically?
As server administrator, open Settings > Scheduled Tasks and enable Refresh local metadata every three days. This schedules rediscovery of local metadata assets, including local subtitles.
Why do subtitle appearance controls have no effect in Plex HTPC?
Plex HTPC’s appearance controls do not affect ASS/SSA or image-based subtitles. For applicable subtitle formats, open Settings > Subtitles and adjust the appearance and position controls. This applies to Plex HTPC on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Which audio track does automatic subtitle synchronization analyze?
Voice analysis uses the first audio stream in the media file. Plex DVR recordings are excluded from this processing.
