Your Plex library works at home, but away from home the server disappears or the video refuses to play. Start with the server and account checks below, then tackle the settings that let connections through your router. If your library already opens remotely, jump to the playback fixes at the end.

Start with the server and Plex service status

Power on the computer or NAS that hosts your media.

Start Plex Media Server on that device.

Check that the server is connected to the internet.

Confirm that Plex Media Server is signed into your Plex account.

Open Plex Status and check Remote Access, Authentication and API server (plex.tv), Authentication/Login page, and Hosted web app (app.plex.tv).

If an incident matches your problem, follow its updates.

Retry after the affected service recovers.

Tip: Keep the server awake and running the entire time you want to watch remotely.

Make sure your account can stream remotely

A missing qualifying subscription blocks remote personal-video playback in affected apps even when the server is reachable.

Check whether the server administrator has Plex Pass. That subscription covers remote-video eligibility for viewers accessing that server.

If the administrator does not have Plex Pass, sign into a viewer account with Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass. The administrator’s Remote Watch Pass does not unlock remote video for other independent accounts.

To check your subscription, open the top-right account menu in Plex Web.

Select Account > Subscriptions & Payments. For subscriptions billed through an app store, available management options depend on that store.

If you own the server and want to upgrade an eligible subscription for your viewers, select Upgrade to Plex Pass.

Choose a plan.

Select Continue.

Review the purchase details.

Select Upgrade to complete the purchase.

Restart the app or server if it does not recognize the new entitlement.

If you once bought a one-time mobile app unlock (Unlock App on Google Play or Activate Now on Amazon builds of Plex for Android 10.27.1 and earlier, or Activate on Plex for iOS 8.45 and earlier), that purchase does not cover the current remote-video requirements. It lifted the old one-minute playback limit, which was a separate restriction. If you have no active Plex Pass and have never had a Remote Watch Pass, Plex offers those earlier purchasers an extended three-month Remote Watch Pass trial, which you must start from the Android or iOS app on the same platform and app-store account that made the original purchase. Plexamp music and Plex Photos remain exempt from the remote-video subscription requirement.

If the server is missing, check its account connection

Use these checks when your player cannot find the server or the installation is unclaimed. You need access to the server to correct its sign-in.

Open Plex Web’s Settings > Server > General for the correct server.

For an unclaimed installation, select Claim Server.

Complete the sign-in.

If server settings are missing on Windows, select Open Plex… from the Plex Media Server system-tray menu.

On macOS, select Open Plex… from its menu-bar menu instead.

On other platforms, open http://localhost:32400/web on the server itself.

For a persistent account connection problem, sign out of the server through Settings > Server > General.

Sign out of the player next. Current mobile apps use Settings > Account > Sign Out.

Sign back into the server first.

Sign back into the player with the intended account.

On a TV or console that uses account linking, select Sign In.

Open plex.tv/link in a browser signed into the intended account.

Enter the player’s four-character code.

Submit the code.

If only a shared library is missing, ask the owner to review your entry under Settings > Manage Library Access.

Accept any pending invitation through Manage Library Access > Library Invitations Received.

Enable Remote Access and repair automatic setup

Open Settings > Server > Remote Access for your server in Plex Web.

Select Enable Remote Access if it is disabled. This enables connectivity; remote-video subscription eligibility remains a separate requirement.

Enable UPnP or NAT-PMP in your router’s settings. Automatic setup requires support for one of these features, and router menus vary by manufacturer.

If the feature is already enabled, turn it off.

Turn it back on.

Retry Remote Access.

Check the router manufacturer for firmware fixes if automatic mapping continues to fail.

If automatic setup still fails, check the server firewall next, then use the manual port-forwarding instructions below.

The server firewall needs its own exception

Allow incoming TCP 32400 for Plex Media Server on the server computer. Router forwarding and the computer’s firewall are separate settings, so opening one does not configure the other. Plex’s discovery and DLNA ports serve the local network; do not expose all of them to the internet.

On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall > Change settings. Select Plex Media Server, or use Allow another app to locate it.

On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options. Use the add button to add Plex Media Server and allow its connections. If macOS presents an incoming-connection prompt for Plex, select Allow.

For an Xfinity security block, open the Xfinity app’s Home > Advanced Security, or Home > CyberSecure if your app shows that name instead. Where the app lists the server’s blocked unauthorized-access event with Allow Access, select it. Xfinity limits that Advanced Security exception to the selected device, port, and source IP for 30 days, so expect to grant it again when it lapses. If your app offers no lasting exception for the server, select Advanced Security or CyberSecure under Settings, then Turn Off. This removes that protection across your whole home network.

Reconnect Plex around a server VPN

This corrects server connection information published incorrectly because of a VPN.

Disconnect the VPN running on your server or router.

Launch Plex Media Server.

Confirm that the server is signed in under Settings > Server > General.

Reconnect the VPN. Incoming connections still depend on what the VPN permits.

Repeat this sequence after server restarts, sign-in, or network changes if the problem returns.

Set up manual forwarding when automatic mapping fails

Use this sequence when you control the router and automatic Remote Access still will not connect.

  1. 1.Reserve the server’s LAN address in the router’s DHCP settings so the forwarding destination stays stable.
  2. 2.Create a router rule forwarding an external TCP port to that server address on internal TCP 32400. For a single server, use TCP 32400 externally too.
  3. 3.Open Plex Web’s Settings > Server > Remote Access and select Show Advanced. Enable Manually specify public port, enter the external port from your router rule, and select Retry or Apply.
  4. 4.For an eligible Xfinity gateway, use the Xfinity app’s WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced Settings > Port forwarding > Add Port Forward > Continue to create the router rule. Select your server, choose Manual Setup, enter the TCP mapping, and select Next. If the server is absent, check that it uses IPv4 and DHCP.
  5. 5.For multiple Plex servers behind one router, assign each a different external TCP port. Forward each rule to its own server’s internal TCP 32400.
  6. 6.If two routers perform NAT, bridge one router or forward through both: outer router to the inner router’s WAN address, then inner router to Plex. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ask it for a public or static IP option that bypasses CGNAT.

Try Relay when direct access remains unavailable

Open Settings > Server > Network in Plex Web.

Select Show Advanced.

Turn on Enable Relay. This provides indirect playback for compatible clients when direct access fails, with the required remote-video entitlement.

Keep Secure connections set to Preferred or Required.

If a client cannot connect with Required, select Preferred to allow clients that cannot establish a secure connection.

Tip: Relay is limited to 2 Mbps and cannot transfer Downloads, so expect those limits when using the fallback.

When the library opens but video will not play

If your library opens remotely, start with playback quality. In current mobile apps, open Settings > Video & Audio and lower Wifi Quality for remote Wi-Fi or Cellular Quality for mobile data when the connection cannot sustain the bitrate. In Plex Web, lower Settings > Quality > Internet Streaming > Video quality; this changes only that web player.

If playback needs video conversion, open Settings > Server > Transcoder > Show Advanced and clear Disable video stream transcoding. For a server struggling to convert video fast enough, set Transcoder quality to Automatic or try Prefer higher speed encoding.

Check for a server update by opening Settings > Server > General. On Windows or macOS, apply an offered update through Server version updates. Linux installations use manual or package-repository updates, while NAS installations use their package interface or manual installation.

If the failure persists, reproduce it. Open Settings > Manage > Troubleshooting and select Download Logs. Save the ZIP for diagnosis or a Plex support-forum request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Plex treat my connection as remote when I am at home?

Blocked local-network permissions and DNS rebinding protection interfere with local connections. On iPhone or iPad, enable Plex under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. On Mac, allow the relevant Plex app or browser under Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. For diagnosed router rebinding interference, allow plex.direct through that protection. These changes restore local access; they do not open your router for remote connections.

Does Remote Watch Pass let me download videos before a trip?

Remote Watch Pass alone does not grant Downloads eligibility. The viewer needs Plex Pass or an eligible managed-user entitlement, and shared-server viewers also need the owner’s Allow Downloads permission. While connected locally in a supported app, select Download on the desired media and finish the transfers before leaving home.

Why can I reach the server but see only some of its movies?

Library sharing, rating restrictions, and label restrictions determine which titles you see. Ask the owner to review your libraries under Manage Library Access and your restrictions under Manage Library Access or Plex Home. For a managed user, the owner must choose the restriction profile None before customizing ratings and labels; custom restrictions require the administrator’s Plex Pass.

What should I check if Plex cannot claim my server because of a certificate error?

For a Certificate is not yet valid error, correct the server’s date and time, preferably using automatic network time, then retry claiming it. Antivirus, proxy, and security software also interfere with server sign-in. Temporarily disable suspected software to test sign-in, then re-enable components individually to identify the blocker and add an application exception or required-port allowance.
