To fix eBay when its website or app is not working, check eBay’s service status, try another browser or the app, then troubleshoot your connection and the affected app or browser. If eBay reports a disruption, wait for service to return before changing your device’s settings. Otherwise, follow the steps that match your problem and retry after each change.

The short version

  • Check service status: An eBay disruption may affect buying, selling, signing in, or the home page.
  • Try another route: Switch between the website and app, or try another updated browser.
  • Fix the affected client: Reopen and update the app, or check browser extensions and stored data.
  • Separate account problems: Incorrect credentials and account restrictions need different steps from loading failures.

Check eBay status and try another way in

Open eBay’s System Status page and check the affected service, such as Sign-In, Buying, Selling, or Home Page. If eBay reports an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting that service, wait for restoration and try again.

When service status does not explain the failure, open ebay.com in another updated browser and repeat the affected task. You can also switch between the website and the official eBay app on a compatible device. This can provide a workaround and help identify a failure limited to one browser or app.

For a page that fails in desktop Chrome, check that the address is the intended eBay URL, then select Reload this page. In Safari on Mac, choose View > Reload Page, or press Command + R.

Check your internet connection

Try opening an unrelated website in desktop Chrome. If that also fails, verify your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection before changing eBay settings. On public Wi-Fi, complete the network’s sign-in portal.

For a home connection that cannot load multiple websites, restart your modem and router using their manufacturer’s instructions. Contact your internet provider if those websites remain inaccessible. In Safari on iPhone or iPad, try cellular data or another Wi-Fi network and check whether an enabled VPN is preventing the connection.

If the eBay app cannot connect over cellular data on an iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and enable Cellular Data. Scroll to the app list and enable eBay. On a cellular iPad, the settings section may be named Cellular Data.

Reopen and update the eBay app

On a compatible Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to display recent apps. On a compatible iPhone SE with a Home button, double-click Home instead. Find eBay, swipe its preview upward, and reopen it.

On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > eBay > Force stop, then tap OK. Reopen eBay and retry your task. Other Android manufacturers may use different menus.

To update eBay on a supported iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, select your profile icon, then select App Updates. Install the available eBay update and reopen the app. On a compatible Android device with Google Play, open the Google Play Store, select your profile icon, choose Manage apps & devices, and update eBay under Updates available.

If the app still fails on a Face ID iPhone, hold the Side button and either Volume button until the power slider appears. On an iPhone SE second or third generation, hold the Side button instead. Move the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

On a Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold, hold Power and Volume up for several seconds, then tap Restart. Retry eBay after startup. You can also check for a Pixel software update under Settings > System > Software update and follow the offered installation instructions.

Update and troubleshoot your browser

In Chrome on Windows or Mac, open More > Help > About Google Chrome and let the update check finish. Select Relaunch when offered. In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and apply the available update.

If desktop Chrome still has loading problems, close unused tabs and unnecessary applications. On Windows, choose More > Exit; on Mac, choose Chrome > Quit Google Chrome. Reopen Chrome and retry eBay.

Where private browsing is permitted, try eBay in desktop Chrome through More > New Incognito window. If it works there, check extensions and ordinary-window cookies. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off, and re-enable them individually while retrying eBay to identify interference.

For Safari on Mac, choose File > New Private Window and try eBay. You can check extensions separately under Safari > Settings > Extensions by deselecting their checkboxes and retrying the site. If private browsing works, continue to the stored-data steps below.

In desktop Firefox, open the Firefox menu, choose Extensions and themes > Extensions, and disable suspected blockers individually, reloading eBay after each change. You can also select the shield beside the address bar and turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for eBay temporarily. Restore protection if it does not help.

Clear stored browser or app data

Clearing eBay’s cache on a Pixel removes its cached app data. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > eBay > Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. Reopen eBay before considering a full app-data reset.

Clearing app storage erases locally saved app data. If the cache step fails, return to the same Pixel screen, tap Clear storage or Clear data, depending on the device, and tap OK. Reopen eBay and sign in again.

Deleting browser cookies signs you out of websites, and clearing cache removes cached files. In desktop Chrome, open More > Delete browsing data, choose All time, and select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files. Select Delete data, then reopen eBay and sign in again.

Deleting eBay’s Safari website data removes its stored data and can sign you out. If eBay worked in a private window on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select eBay, click Remove, then Done, and retry in a regular window.

Clearing Safari history and website data deletes that information and requires you to sign in to eBay again. On a current iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data, then tap Clear History. Return to eBay, sign in, and retry.

Deleting the iPhone app can remove local app data. If reopening and updating have not helped, touch and hold eBay, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Reinstall it from the official eBay App Store listing, checking Compatibility before installing.

Check settings that can block website features

Check JavaScript settings if eBay’s website does not function correctly. In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript and select Sites can use JavaScript. In Chrome on Android, open Settings > Site settings > JavaScript and enable it.

For Safari on a current iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and turn on JavaScript. On a personal or managed computer, also check whether your installed firewall or antivirus is blocking the browser’s connection. Review that product’s rules or ask your administrator to correct a mistaken block; the controls depend on the security software.

Resolve sign in and account problems

Sign in only through eBay’s own website or official app, and never give your password or financial details to someone who contacts you. Manually enter the intended username or email and password, checking that autofill or autocorrect has not changed them.

For an eBay password sign-in, enter your email or username, select Continue, enter the password, then select Sign in. If your account is linked to a provider, select the corresponding Continue with Google, Continue with Facebook, or Continue with Apple button and complete that provider’s authentication. Use an existing passkey if it is offered at sign-in.

If you have forgotten your password, open eBay’s password reset help and follow its reset link and identity verification. Recovery options depend on the contact methods registered to your account.

For a restriction or suspension, read the notice in eBay Messages and your registered email account, then complete the stated reinstatement requirements. Resetting a browser or app cannot remove an account restriction.

Report a persistent problem to eBay

When the app remains usable, shake your device to display its reporting options. If nothing happens, open the app’s settings and choose Shake to Report. On screens with the upper-right three-dot menu, you can also tap it to access Help & Report.

On eBay website pages with the lower-right ? icon, select it to report a technical problem or send feedback. For further assistance, open eBay’s official support portal, open Help & Contact, and find the relevant help topic. Select Contact us at the bottom, choose your issue, and use the contact option offered for your account and topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does eBay open normally but send no notifications?

Check notifications both on your device and inside eBay. On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > eBay and enable notifications; on Android, open Settings > Apps > eBay > Notifications, with menus varying by manufacturer. In the eBay app, open My eBay > Settings > Notifications and enable the categories you want.

What should you check if eBay’s camera feature fails on Android?

Open Settings > Apps > eBay > Permissions, using See all apps if needed, and select the camera permission. Choose Allow only while using the app. On Android devices exposing these privacy controls, open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls and enable Camera access if you intend to use the camera. App permission cannot override a disabled system camera control.

Why can’t you install the eBay app on an older Apple device?

Your device must meet the eBay App Store listing’s requirements: iOS 18.0 or later, iPadOS 18.0 or later, or macOS 15.0 or later on a Mac with Apple M1 or later. Check Compatibility on the listing before installing. You can also try eBay’s website in an updated browser.

What should you do after too many eBay password change attempts?

If you have attempted to change your password more than five times within 24 hours, wait 24 hours before trying again. Check Caps Lock and manually replace any outdated password supplied by autofill.
