To fix Canva Background Remover, switch to the account and workspace with an eligible plan, select your photo, and choose BG Remover. If processing fails, retry with a photo smaller than 9MB, restore your internet connection, and check the browser or app. If removal finishes but the result looks wrong, repair the cutout or check your transparent download settings.

The short version

  • Check access: The editor requires an eligible plan, while Canva’s standalone tool offers limited free access.
  • Check the photo: Use a sharp, well-lit image smaller than 9MB with clear contrast around the subject.
  • Check loading: Restore connectivity, check Canva Status, and retry in an updated browser or app.
  • Check the result: Repair missing areas with Restore and enable Transparent background for an eligible transparent download.

Check the account with your subscription

From Canva’s homepage, select your profile picture, open Settings, then select Billing and plans. Check the subscription associated with the current workspace. If billing settings are unavailable, contact the workspace administrator. Background removal in the editor requires an eligible plan; free access through the standalone tool works differently.

To switch accounts, return to the homepage, select your profile icon, open Accounts, and select the subscribed account. To add that account, select + Add another account and sign in. If the profile icon is missing, look under More.

If your account belongs to multiple teams, select the homepage profile icon, open Teams, and select the current team to display the others. Choose the team carrying the subscription, then retry removal. Switching workspaces does not require canceling your subscription.

Find the current background removal controls

In the editor, select the photo, then choose BG Remover. This is Canva’s current photo removal control for eligible desktop and mobile plans. If removal finishes but needs corrections, use the repair steps below.

On desktop, you can also open Projects > Images, hover over the photo, and select its More menu. Choose Edit image > Tools > BG Remover. This route also requires an eligible plan.

Retry with a smaller and clearer photo

Prepare a photo smaller than 9MB and retry background removal. Canva downscales images above 10MP after removal, so a reduction in resolution can be expected behavior.

Choose a sharp, well-lit image with clear contrast between the subject and its surroundings. Avoid severe blur and dark shadows that obscure the edges. Inspect the resulting cutout before exporting, and use the correction controls below for unwanted or missing areas.

Restore connectivity and check for an outage

Restore an internet connection before retrying, and reopen the affected design if needed. Background Remover is not included in offline editing. Use a stable connection, close unused applications and browser tabs, then try again.

If a VPN is active, turn it off and back on before retrying. Open Canva Status and check for active incidents affecting editing, uploads, or apps. When an incident matches your problem, retry after Canva reports recovery.

Troubleshoot the browser

Reopen the design in an updated supported browser. Canva requires JavaScript, so check that it is enabled if you previously blocked it. In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript, select Sites can use JavaScript, and reload Canva.

In Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Security, then select Enable JavaScript. Reload Canva and retry removal. If a managed policy prevents you from changing JavaScript settings, ask your administrator for help.

In desktop Chrome, select More > New Incognito window, sign in to Canva, and retry. Canva recommends this test for loading failures related to browser plugins. You can also open that window with Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command + Shift + N on Mac. If your managed device restricts private browsing, try another updated supported browser or device.

Clearing the cache deletes cached images and files. In desktop Chrome, select More > Delete browsing data, choose All time, and select Cached images and files. Leave the other data categories unselected, select Delete data, then reload Canva.

Update Canva or try another device

On Android devices using Google Play, open the Google Play Store, select your profile icon, then open Manage apps & device > Updates available > See details. Select Update beside Canva. Update Android System WebView too if an update is offered.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, select My Account or your photo, then open App Updates. Select Update beside Canva.

If the updated app or browser still fails, reopen the design on another device or in another updated supported browser. You can also try Canva’s desktop app through its official Windows download page or Mac download page. Select Download Canva for Windows or Download Canva for Mac, respectively. Canva’s desktop requirements specify Windows 10 version 1909 or later, or macOS 12 or later.

Repair an incomplete cutout

When automatic removal leaves unwanted areas or removes part of your subject, select BG Remover again to open the correction panel with Erase and Restore. For the dedicated manual tool, select a JPG or PNG, then choose Eraser > Pixel Eraser. The dedicated tool works in the desktop browser and mobile app.

Manual erasing removes the pixels you brush over. Adjust the brush-size slider and brush over unwanted pixels, then use Restore for areas removed accidentally. Select Done to retain your edits. Within Pixel Eraser, you can also undo with Ctrl + Z on Windows or Cmd + Z on Mac.

For detailed desktop corrections in Pixel Eraser, hold Ctrl while scrolling with a mouse to zoom, or pinch on a trackpad. Pan by holding the middle or right mouse button and dragging, or by dragging with two fingers on a trackpad. Paint with a left-click or a one-finger press and drag.

Pixel Eraser is available to all users, but Free users cannot use it on premium images. It does not support vectors or Canva elements, so select a JPG or PNG for this method. If edits fail to save, check your connection and refresh.

Download with a transparent background

Deleting background images or elements removes them from the design. Use the trash icon to delete those items, or set the page background to white. Then select Share > Download.

Choose PNG or WebP, set Size and Quality, and turn on Transparent background. If you want to retain these download settings, turn on Save download settings. Choose All, This Page, or Custom as appropriate, then select Download.

Canva lists transparent downloads for Pro, existing Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans; this export option is unavailable for Canva Docs. If your plan does not include it, try the standalone Background Remover’s limited free downloads below. Check both the cutout and the export settings when your downloaded image still has a solid background.

Try the standalone tool or get help

Open Canva’s standalone Background Remover, select Upload image, or drag a photo onto the page. Sign in if prompted and let Canva process it automatically. Preview the cutout, then download it or continue editing.

The standalone tool offers a limited number of free high-resolution downloads. That access differs from background removal inside the editor, so check the access shown by the tool you are using. If troubleshooting still does not resolve the failure, open Canva’s support page, select Log in, and continue through the support options available to your account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Canva refuse to remove a video background?

Video background removal requires an eligible paid plan, and Canva limits the original length of videos it can process. For a clip trimmed in Canva, download it and re-upload it before trying again. On mobile, import the video through Uploads, select it, then choose BG Remover.

Where do photos go after removing backgrounds from a folder?

When you use the folder’s More > Remove background command, successful results appear in a new folder named “[folder name] - Edited,” while failures remain in the original folder. If you instead tick selected photos inside a folder and choose BG Remover, the edited photos are added to that same folder. Folder removal skips library photos and designs. For this paid-plan feature, use uploaded photos, keep each folder at 50 images or fewer, and process one folder at a time.

Can Canva AI remove a photo background instead?

Yes, if you have a paid plan with Canva AI access, select Canva AI on the homepage, select the plus icon, choose Upload, and add your photo. Type Remove background and select Submit. Download the result using its download icon, or select the photo and choose Use Canva editor. Canva AI does not currently remove video backgrounds.

Why does a background removal app inside Canva have different limits?

A tool installed through Canva’s Apps Marketplace may come from another developer. Select More on its thumbnail and inspect Created by. If the developer is not Canva, open More and select Get help with this app for that app’s limits or subscription problems.

What should you do when Canva displays an AI usage limit?

For an AI workflow displaying an allowance warning, select the homepage profile icon, then open Settings > Billing > AI usage. Follow the displayed pause or reset guidance. Do not assume every Background Remover failure is a quota problem.
