To check spelling in Canva, select editable text in your design or Canva Doc, then choose Magic Write > Fix Spelling. Review the correction before applying it. This works in Canva’s desktop and mobile editors when your account has Magic Write access.
Magic Write access depends on your account permissions, plan, language, and region. You can also check compatible Canva text fields with Grammarly or LanguageTool, or copy editable text into another editor and return the corrections to Canva.

Check selected text with Magic Write
Open your design or Canva Doc and select the editable text you want to check. Choose Magic Write, then select Fix Spelling. On desktop, you can also right-click the selected text to access Magic Write.
Read the generated correction before deciding how to apply it. Selecting Replace substitutes the corrected text for your original selection; choose Add below if you want to keep the original alongside the correction. Select Replace when you want the corrected version in its place.
You can also access the tool through the Canva Assistant button or tap + in a Canva Doc. Highlight your text, select Magic Write, then choose Fix spelling. Alternatively, enter or paste your text on Canva’s spell-checker page to proceed to the editor.
Ask Magic Write to correct pasted text
Open a design and select Quick actions > Magic Write. With a keyboard, you can also press / to open Quick actions, then choose Magic Write. Enter a request to correct spelling together with the text you want checked; no particular wording is required.
Select the purple arrow to submit your request. Review the output, then choose Insert or use the copy icon. This workflow also requires Magic Write access.
Set up Grammarly to check text in Canva
Open the official Grammarly browser page, choose your browser’s extension, and complete installation through your browser’s extension store or, for Safari, Apple’s App Store. Grammarly for Safari starts turned off for every website, so enable it for Canva after installing. Grammarly supports Canva in Chrome, Chromium Edge, Safari, and Firefox. Individual text fields can still be incompatible.
With the extension active, open Canva in that browser and edit a text field. Hover over an underlined word and click the suggested correction, or click the Grammarly icon in the field to review suggestion cards. Use the extension’s toolbar icon to check whether checking is enabled for Canva.
For the desktop companion, get the appropriate Windows or Mac download from the official Grammarly desktop page. With Grammarly installed and running, open Canva and edit your text. Click an underlined word or the floating Grammarly widget, then click a suggestion card to apply its correction.
On an interface with a Grammarly tab, open that tab to review suggestions. The desktop companion supports both Canva and Canva’s website on Windows and Mac. If a browser text field does not work with the extension, copy its editable text into the Grammarly web editor using the steps below.
Check multiline text with LanguageTool
Install the LanguageTool browser add-on from its official apps and browser add-ons page. Under LanguageTool for All Browsers and Websites, choose the download link for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or Opera. Open Canva in the browser after installing the add-on.
Type in a multiline text field, review the underlined potential errors, and select the corrections you want to apply. LanguageTool’s Canva support covers multiline text fields in supported browsers. For other editable text, use one of the separate editor workflows below.
Check copied text in Google Docs or Word
On a computer, copy the editable text from Canva into a Google Docs document. Click Spelling and grammar check at the top left to review the text. Choose Change to accept a correction or Ignore to skip it.
Copy the checked text from Google Docs, then double-click the corresponding Canva text box and edit its content to match. You can use this workflow with any Canva plan that lets you edit and copy text.
In Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, paste the Canva text into a document and press F7 to start checking. Alternatively, right-click an underlined error and choose a correction. For automatic checking in Word for Windows, open File > Options > Proofing, then select Check spelling as you type.
Copy the corrected passage from Word, then double-click the corresponding Canva text box and edit its content to match. This workflow does not require a paid Canva plan.
Use the Grammarly web editor without an extension
You can check copied Canva text in the Grammarly web editor using a supported desktop browser, without installing an extension or desktop app. Sign in to the editor, click New document, and paste your Canva text. Review the suggestions, then click Accept for a correction or Dismiss to skip it.
Copy the checked passage from Grammarly, then double-click the corresponding Canva text box and edit its content to match. If your organization restricts access to the Grammarly editor, use Google Docs or Word if you have access to either.
Fix Magic Write access through administrator permissions
If Magic Write is missing because of account permissions, an owner or administrator can change access on Canva Teams, Business, Enterprise, or Education. From Canva’s homepage, select the profile icon, then open Settings. Under Controls and permissions, select Permissions > Magic and AI, find Magic Write, and choose who may access it.
If you administer Canva Enterprise, District, or Campus, you can grant access to specific roles or groups. Select the profile icon, then open Settings > Permissions > Magic and AI. For Magic Write, select Everyone or Select roles and groups; if restricting access, choose the appropriate roles or groups, then select Save.
Check your allowance when Magic Write is unavailable
If you cannot use Magic Write, check your account’s remaining AI allowance. From Canva’s homepage, select the profile icon, then open Settings > Billing. Review AI usage for the remaining allowance.
Free and Pro Lite accounts use the shared AI allowance for Magic Write. Canva says Magic Write does not draw from that shared monthly allowance on qualifying paid plans other than Pro Lite, although fair-use limits apply. If you cannot use Magic Write, check your text with a compatible proofreading tool or copy it into Google Docs, Word, or Grammarly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose a different spelling dialect for Canva text?
Yes, when checking Canva text with Grammarly, open Menu in the Grammarly editor and choose the appropriate Language preference. Alternatively, open Account > Writing > Personal Style > Language Settings, then under I write in:, select your preferred dialect. This changes Grammarly’s language preference, not Canva’s language setting.
Which languages can Google Docs check for copied Canva text?
Google Docs provides spelling and grammar suggestions for English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian on a computer. You can check editable text copied from Canva in those languages.
Why does Grammarly work in one Canva text field but not another?
Grammarly’s browser extension does not initialize in text areas under 38 pixels high. If that affects your text field, copy the editable text into the Grammarly web editor to check it.
Can I use Grammarly’s editor on an iPhone or iPad?
Yes, Grammarly also provides its editor on iPhone and iPad. You can use it as a separate editor for reviewing copied Canva text.
What operating system does the Grammarly desktop companion require?
Grammarly lists Windows 10 and macOS 11 as its minimum operating systems for the desktop companion. Use a current supported operating system and browser release.
Does Canva list Education students as eligible for its spell checker?
Canva’s spell-checker page excludes Education students from its listed eligible accounts, while including Education administrators and teachers. Canva also provides configurable Magic Write permissions for Education, so school access depends on the applicable account permissions.
