Apple Maps does not include a separate voice picker inside the Maps app. To change Apple Maps voice, change the Siri voice or Siri language on the device giving directions, then adjust spoken-direction controls for volume, muting, and CarPlay behavior.
Change the Apple Maps voice on iPhone
Use this when you want turn-by-turn directions to use a different Siri voice on your iPhone. The available voices depend on your Siri language and region.
Open Settings.
Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Tap Voice.
Choose a different variety or voice.
Return to Maps, start a route, and listen for the new Siri voice during spoken navigation.
Switch the Maps directions language
Change the spoken language by changing Siri's primary language.
- 1.Open Settings on your iPhone.
- 2.Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- 3.Tap Language.
- 4.Select the language you want as your primary Siri language.
- 5.Start a route in Maps and listen for the new spoken directions language.
Use the same voice setting on iPad
On iPad, Maps also gets its spoken navigation voice from Siri. Open Settings, tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap Voice.
Tap the available options to hear them, then choose the voice you want. The exact voices vary by language.
For turn-by-turn directions away from Wi-Fi on a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad, cellular data is required.
If this method fails, change the Siri language first, then return to Voice and choose from the updated options.
Make Apple Maps speak more or less during a route
Use this when the voice itself is right, but Apple Maps gives too many directions, speaks only alerts, or stays silent. These controls change guidance output, not the Siri voice identity.
Start driving, cycling, or walking directions in Maps.
Tap Go.
Tap the Audio Control button on the map.
Choose Unmuted, Audio Alerts Only, or Muted.
Spoken turn-by-turn directions are not available in all countries or regions.
Fix Apple Maps voice volume
The most common cause of a too-quiet or too-loud Maps voice is the spoken-directions volume setting.
During navigation, tap the Audio Control button on the map.
Choose Louder, Normal, or Softer.
On iOS 26, the in-route control on iPhone is the Audio Control button on the map; the Volume button is the equivalent control in CarPlay.
Set default spoken direction behavior
You can set Maps voice behavior before you start a route. Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Maps.
Tap Spoken Directions, then choose an option below Voice Volume.
Turn Directions Pause Spoken Audio, Directions Wake Device, or Directions on Radio on or off. Directions on Radio applies only on supported cars.
If this method fails, start a route in Maps and use the in-route Audio Control button instead.
Control Apple Maps voice in CarPlay
CarPlay uses Maps from your connected iPhone, so change the actual voice on the iPhone first.
- 1.On your iPhone, open Settings.
- 2.Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap Voice.
- 3.Choose the Siri voice you want Apple Maps to use.
- 4.In CarPlay Maps during a route, tap the Volume button.
- 5.Choose Mute to mute directions or Alerts Only to hear alerts and hazards only.
- 6.Activate Siri and say Stop navigating to end directions at any time.
Adjust Apple Watch Siri voice and Maps turn alerts
Apple Watch Maps does not speak turn-by-turn directions, so there is no separate Maps voice to pick on the watch. On driving, cycling, and walking routes the watch uses sounds and taps to signal turns: a low tone followed by a high tone means turn right, and a high tone followed by a low tone means turn left. You feel a vibration on the last leg and again when you arrive. For a spoken navigation voice, follow the route on the paired iPhone and set the Siri voice there.
You can still change the voice Siri itself uses on the watch. On Apple Watch, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Siri Voice.
Choose a different variety or voice. The Siri Voice option is not available in every language.
To change the language, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Language.
If the language change does not apply on the watch, change it on iPhone under Settings, then Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, then Language.
Siri on Apple Watch requires an internet connection, and you can also choose how Siri responds under Settings, Siri, then Siri Responses.
Skip outdated Maps voice fixes
Use this when an older tutorial sends you to menus that no longer match Apple's current Maps settings. The old Settings, Maps, Driving & Navigation, Navigation Voice Volume, and No Voice path is not the current supported path.
For default spoken-direction behavior, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Maps, then tap Spoken Directions.
For in-route audio controls, start navigation in Maps and use the Audio Control button.
On managed or supervised devices, an organization can restrict Siri, but Apple does not provide a management setting that selects a person's Apple Maps or Siri navigation voice.
Personal Voice, VoiceOver voice settings, Apple Account settings, iCloud on the web, and ChatGPT or Apple Intelligence settings do not change the Apple Maps navigation voice identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change only the Apple Maps voice without changing Siri?
No. Apple Maps uses the Siri voice for spoken navigation, so changing the Maps voice means changing Siri Voice on the device.
Why do I see different Apple Maps voice options from someone else?
Voice choices vary by Siri language and region. Change Siri Language first if you need a different set of voice options.
Does muting Apple Maps change the navigation voice?
No. Muting, alerts-only mode, and volume settings only change how much Maps speaks and how loud it is. They do not change the voice identity.
Can Personal Voice be used for Apple Maps directions?
No. Personal Voice is supported for Live Speech, Read & Speak, and VoiceOver, not Apple Maps navigation directions.
