GoPro has launched Close-Up Filter and Close-Up Filter Set for MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO cameras, adding closer focusing and background blur through accessories made by PolarPro. The single filter costs $49.99, while the set costs $99.99; both are available globally now through GoPro.com. The filters fit over either the camera lens or an ND filter, and their fixed focus requires no adjustment.
The standalone Close-Up Filter uses a +0.5 diopter, with a focusing range running from 50cm to 150cm. Close-Up Filter Set includes that strength plus +2 and +1 options, alongside a travel case for storing filters between uses. GoPro says increasing the strength produces stronger separation between the subject and its surroundings, with a shallower area of the shot remaining in focus.
The strongest option, +2, focuses between 30cm and 50cm, while the +1 option covers subjects between 45cm and 90cm from the camera. That closer range comes with a qualification for action footage: GoPro warns that rapid camera movement or activities involving substantial vibration may affect stabilization with the +2 filter attached. The +0.5 option also caps distant focus at 150cm to produce the separation effect.
GoPro positions the lower-strength standalone option for travel footage, lifestyle shooting and vlogs, where it says the filter creates a softer background while keeping the effect subtle. PolarPro makes the transparent filters with optical glass and multiple coatings, which GoPro says preserve image sharpness and accurate colors. Both purchases carry coverage under PolarPro's Adventure Assurance™.
Compatibility also extends to MISSION 1 PRO Ultimate Creator Edition, MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition and MISSION 1 PRO Creator Edition. GoPro offers Premium+ and Premium subscribers a 20% discount on Close-Up Filters bought through GoPro.com. Subscriber pricing becomes available only when the subscription renews, and subscriptions are offered in selected territories.
The accessories follow a free MISSION 1 Series firmware update earlier this month that introduced continuous photography, including sequences of more than 20 RAW shots at 50MP. That update covered MISSION 1 PRO ILS as well as MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO, with installation available through GoPro Quik or a download from GoPro.com.
