Zoom has acquired Onyx, bringing an enterprise search platform with connections to more than 50 applications into Zoom AI Services. The purchase adds software that supplies people and AI agents with information drawn from an organization’s internal systems, with Zoom aiming to give agents relevant company knowledge before they take action. Zoom says Onyx will continue as a standalone platform and retain its open-source model, including the ability for customers to host it themselves.
Onyx can draw information from sources such as customer records and ticketing systems, as well as company documents and wikis. The platform is designed to provide that context in real time when a person or an AI agent requests it, according to Zoom. Organizations can operate the complete system using their own infrastructure, an option Zoom points to for customers whose rules require on-premises deployment or control over where data resides.
Zoom says Onyx will also remain model-agnostic and app-agnostic, preserving its independence from a particular AI model or application. The Onyx team has joined Zoom under co-founders Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun. Zoom says its resources and AI capabilities will help that team accelerate development and improve service for customers.
Founded in 2023, Onyx has attracted more than 30,000 developers to its community, according to Zoom. Zoom names Hudson River Trading, NASA and Nebius among the enterprises using the platform. It says Onyx handles more than one million queries from users each week, giving the acquired service an existing workload alongside its developer following.
The acquisition follows Zoom’s October 20 rollout of agentic search, which lets users find answers in conversations and more than 40 third-party applications, including ServiceNow and Microsoft OneDrive. Zoom also introduced its Unified Context Layer at Zoomtopia, combining conversation information with company documents and connected business systems, so Onyx joins an effort that already spans search and internal organizational context.
