Microsoft says its redesigned Xbox PC app launches up to 60% faster, with Xbox Insiders able to test it from November 5. The update changes how PC players browse their collections, search for games and reach friends, while related cloud gaming changes are starting on the web, supported TVs and VR headsets.

The performance figures come from Microsoft's own testing, and it says results may vary by device, internet connection, system configuration and usage. Beyond the speed claims, the PC redesign updates game cards, Home, Settings and animations to help players scan the interface and move through it.

The PC Changes

  • Home, Store and Game Pass load up to 50% faster, and in-app windows open up to 65% faster.
  • Library gains revised filters, simpler navigation and additional tools for organizing games.
  • Friends move into primary navigation, with access to chats, parties and their gaming activity.
  • Search brings together people, games, installed titles and add-ons.

The Verge's Tom Warren, who has used the new app for the past few weeks, found it noticeably faster on several devices and easier to navigate with a controller, and says the search interface no longer pops up when moving between sections. Warren also says the redesign makes the Game Bar interface on handhelds feel a little out of place, and understands Microsoft is looking to improve that in the coming months.

For players who want early access, joining the Xbox Insider Program involves downloading the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Microsoft's announcement gives no date for a wider PC release.

Cloud Browsing Gets More Controls

On the web, the new Library tab collects cloud-playable games from a player's purchases and Xbox Game Pass access. Players can narrow that collection using filters for genre, input choices and recent play, alongside sorting controls.

Desktop mode uses the extra space on PCs and bigger displays to show more browsing content. Appearance settings include light and dark modes plus five new high-contrast choices intended to accommodate different visual requirements and preferences.

Microsoft began testing the refreshed web experience with Insiders earlier this year, and says it will reach more players automatically over the coming weeks. Players who want it sooner can go to play.xbox.com.

Xbox Cloud Gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets are also starting to get the refreshed look and navigation. Microsoft says it is adapting each experience to its screen while aiming to keep game discovery and access familiar between devices. It says player feedback will shape later changes.
