NYT Connections #1230 Hints and Solutions for October 23, 2026

The Friday edition of NYT Connections arrives with puzzle #1230, serving up a grid that rewards a flexible vocabulary, a little technical knowledge, and an ear for familiar phrases.

What Makes Connections Tick

For newcomers, NYT Connections presents 16 words that must be sorted into four thematic groups of four. The twist? You're limited to four mistakes, and the color-coded difficulty system (yellow being easiest, purple being trickiest) means surface-level connections often mislead.

Since its June 2023 launch, Connections has carved out its niche in the Times' puzzle ecosystem, standing alongside Wordle and the crossword as a daily ritual for millions of players worldwide. The game's genius lies in its red herrings, words that could fit multiple categories but belong in only one.

Today's Grid at a Glance

Here are the 16 words staring back at you in puzzle #1230:

EXTENSION | LOVE | DIRECT | POWER
SPINAL | VOCAL | DRIVER | DISTANCE
PHONE | TIME | UPDATE | OPEN
FRANK | FORCE | DOUBLE | PLUGIN

A seemingly random collection that somehow connects into four perfect categories.

Strategic Hints (No Spoilers Yet)

Yellow Category Nudge: Think about how someone expresses an opinion.

Green Category Clue: A little routine digital housekeeping should help here.

Blue Category Hint: Think back to science class and the relationships behind the calculations.

Purple Category Teaser: Try giving each candidate the same short companion.

The Full Solutions

Yellow (Forthright): DIRECT, FRANK, OPEN, VOCAL

DIRECT, FRANK, OPEN, and VOCAL describe ways of being candid or expressing your views. VOCAL puts the emphasis on speaking up, while OPEN can tempt you toward the computer vocabulary because it is also a familiar command.

Green (Things You Install On A Computer): DRIVER, EXTENSION, PLUGIN, UPDATE

DRIVER, EXTENSION, PLUGIN, and UPDATE are all things you install on a computer. EXTENSION also pairs naturally with PHONE in everyday telephone vocabulary, creating a tempting connection across the green and purple groups.

Blue (Quantities In A Formula For Power): DISTANCE, FORCE, POWER, TIME

DISTANCE, FORCE, POWER, and TIME fit the relationship power equals force multiplied by distance, divided by time, when a constant force acts along the displacement. The distance and force give the work done, and dividing by the elapsed time gives the average power.

Purple (___ Tap): DOUBLE, LOVE, PHONE, SPINAL

Add TAP after DOUBLE, LOVE, PHONE, and SPINAL to make four familiar expressions. A double tap involves two quick taps, a love tap is a light affectionate strike, a phone tap intercepts communications, and a spinal tap collects cerebrospinal fluid.

The Verdict

Green is my pick for the first group to fall, with DRIVER, EXTENSION, PLUGIN, and UPDATE forming a concrete installation checklist. The real trap is letting PHONE pull EXTENSION into a telephone-themed detour.

Yellow offers a useful vocabulary foothold, but blue asks you to reconstruct a specific scientific relationship. Purple is the streak-deciding group in my view, because DOUBLE, LOVE, PHONE, and SPINAL become convincing companions only after you supply TAP.

Reset and Repeat

Carry today's TAP trick into the next grid: when meanings scatter, test whether a shared companion brings them together. Come back tomorrow for another fresh set of connections.

For now, puzzle #1230 is solved. See you at midnight for the next round.
