To enable the Windows key again, turn off your keyboard's Windows lock or gaming mode using the control for your model. If that does not help, check its connection, key assignments, and Windows settings. The Settings steps below use Windows 11 menus.

The short version

  • Check the lock: Gaming keyboards can disable Windows, and the unlock control depends on your model.
  • Separate the symptoms: Compare Ctrl + Esc, pressing Windows, and clicking Start.
  • Check software: Keyboard remaps and third-party utilities can redirect or block the key.
  • Repair selectively: Try driver fixes for keyboard trouble and Windows repairs when Start also fails with the mouse.

Check whether the key or Start is failing

Press Ctrl + Esc, then click Start with your mouse. Compare those results with pressing Windows alone, and separately try Windows + E, which opens File Explorer.

If the other methods open Start, focus first on the keyboard's lock, connection, and assignments. If clicking Start also fails, the problem may involve Windows or your user profile. A working Windows + E shortcut helps distinguish a Start problem from a completely unresponsive key.

Turn off your keyboard's Windows lock

Use the control for your exact keyboard model, then press Windows again to check the result. The combinations below are model-specific, so do not treat Fn + Windows as a universal unlock shortcut.

On Logitech gaming keyboards with a dedicated Game Mode button, press that button to turn the mode off. Logitech says this mode disables both the Windows and Context Menu keys.

For supported Razer full-size and tenkeyless keyboards, press Fn + F10 and check that the Gaming Mode indicator turns off. Huntsman Mini and Huntsman Mini Analog use Fn + U; Huntsman V3 Pro Mini uses Fn + O. On HyperX Alloy FPS and Alloy FPS Pro, press Fn + F12 and check that the Game Mode indicator switches off.

On Corsair K65 PLUS WIRELESS, press and release Fn + L to toggle Win Lock off. For compatible Corsair keyboards exposing the control in iCUE, select your keyboard and open Performance. Under When Win Lock is ON:, turn off Disable WinKey to allow the key while keeping that lock mode enabled.

On ASUS ROG Strix Scope II, press Fn + Windows; on ROG Strix Flare II, press its dedicated Windows Lock button. Supported ROG/TUF computers exposing the control in Armoury Crate 6.0 or newer also offer a software setting. Open Armoury Crate, select Home, open the computer's System Settings, select System Configuration, and enable Win Key.

MSI FORGE GK110 and STRIKE 600 use Fn + Windows to toggle the lock. Wooting Two HE, 60HE v2, and 80HE use that combination with default bindings, while Wooting 60HE uses Fn + Caps Lock + Windows. A Keychron QMK/VIA keyboard uses Fn + Windows for this only when you have configured Keychron's Windows-lock mapping.

Check the connection and keyboard mode

Unplug an external keyboard, wait briefly, and reconnect it directly to the PC instead of through a USB hub. Try another USB port, inspect the cable, and check for debris obstructing the key. Charge a wireless keyboard or replace its batteries before testing again.

For a USB wireless receiver, unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it. If your keyboard or receiver has a manufacturer-provided Reset button, use it to reestablish the connection. Retest the key before changing Windows settings.

Check the system switch if the Windows and Alt keys seem swapped on a dual-platform keyboard. On affected Keychron K-series models, set the physical system toggle to Windows. On Corsair K65 PLUS WIRELESS, set its WIN/MAC switch to Windows, then retest both keys.

Connect an external keyboard to another PC after checking its hardware lock. If it fails there too, pursue manufacturer repair or replacement; a working replacement keyboard also gives you an immediate workaround. For an integrated laptop keyboard, follow the manufacturer's model-specific service guidance.

Check accessibility settings

Brief keystrokes can be ignored when Filter keys is enabled. On Windows 11, use the mouse to open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, then turn off Filter keys. Test a short press of Windows again.

On that same Windows 11 keyboard settings page, turn on On-screen keyboard and click its Windows key. You can open and use the software keyboard while troubleshooting the physical one. This supplies an alternative key rather than unlocking the keyboard's hardware.

Remove remaps and close conflicting utilities

If you use PowerToys, close it and test the key again. Alternatively, open PowerToys Settings > Keyboard Manager and disable Keyboard Manager. If that restores the key, inspect Remap a key and Remap a shortcut before enabling it again.

For a compatible Corsair keyboard using iCUE 4 or newer, open iCUE, select your keyboard, and open Key Assignments. In Assignments, open the menu beside the assignment affecting Windows and delete that assignment. Check the active profile and separately configured onboard assignments, whose controls vary by model.

A problem that starts only with a particular game can point to an application-linked profile. On supported ASUS ROG/TUF computers with Armoury Crate 6, open Scenario Profiles, select the linked profile, and inspect System Configuration. Correct Win Key wherever your model exposes it, or remove the unwanted profile association through its editing controls.

To isolate other software, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select a suspected third-party macro, overlay, or keyboard application, choose End task, and test after each closure. Start with recently installed utilities and avoid ending Windows system processes indiscriminately.

Once closing an app restores the key, you can remove that confirmed culprit. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, and select More > Uninstall. Complete its uninstaller, but remember that removing software does not necessarily clear assignments stored in the keyboard itself.

Restart Windows and repair the keyboard driver

Save your work, right-click Start, and select Shut down or sign out > Restart. Sign in and retest the key. If it still fails, check for updates before reinstalling the keyboard device.

On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. For optional drivers on Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. When a relevant keyboard or device driver is offered, select it, choose Download and install, and restart afterward.

If updating does not help, save your work before you reinstall the affected keyboard driver. Right-click Start, select Device Manager, expand Keyboards, and identify the affected keyboard before right-clicking it. Select Uninstall device, select Uninstall, and restart so Windows can attempt to reinstall the driver.

When the failure began immediately after a driver change, consider rolling that driver back instead. With an administrator account and a previous driver available, right-click the affected keyboard in Device Manager and select Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. Choose the applicable reason, select Yes, and restart if prompted.

Repair Windows when Start also fails

Use system-file repair when Windows itself is malfunctioning, particularly when clicking Start fails too. Install available Windows updates and restart first. Then search for Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and select Yes.

You can repair Windows using Command Prompt with DISM followed by System File Checker. Run this command first and wait for successful completion:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Next, run the command below. Wait for the scan to finish before testing again.

sfc /scannow

A separate account can help isolate a problem affecting only your user profile. On Windows 11, open Settings > Accounts > Other user > Add account. To create a local test account, select I don't have this person's sign-in information, then select Add a user without a Microsoft account.

Complete the account setup, sign into that account, and test both Start and Windows. If they work there, that points toward settings or damage affecting the original profile. This identifies the scope of the problem rather than repairing the original account.

Use Windows recovery for persistent system trouble

If a suitable restore point predates the problem, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and select Next. Choose the restore point, selecting Show more restore points if needed. Review Scan for affected programs, then select Next > Finish. Personal files are retained, but later application, driver, and system changes can be undone.

Eligible Windows 11 installations with the required servicing updates offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery, then under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now. Choose whether to allow the PC to restart automatically 15 minutes after the installation completes, then select OK. Keep the PC online and powered, and restart it yourself when the repair completes if you did not allow the automatic restart; this option may be unavailable on devices with managed updates.

A full reset belongs last, after keyboard locks, hardware faults, and simpler software causes have been excluded. Before you reset Windows while keeping personal files, back up important data and retain your BitLocker recovery key. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC, select Keep my files, then choose Cloud download or Local reinstall and complete the wizard. When you select Keep my files, Windows preserves personal files but removes apps and settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Windows shortcuts run on the wrong computer during Remote Desktop?

Remote Desktop Connection controls where those shortcuts go. Open Show Options > Local Resources, then under Apply Windows key combinations, choose On this computer, On the remote computer, or Only when using the full screen to match your intended behavior. Nested Remote Desktop and RemoteApp sessions have additional shortcut limitations.

What if Windows behaves as though the Windows key is held down?

If this starts after returning from a Remote Desktop session, press and release Windows once. For unintentionally active modifiers more generally, on Windows 11 open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Sticky keys.

Why is a key on my Wooting keyboard still unresponsive after disabling its lock?

On Wooting Hall-effect keyboards covered by its calibration procedure, pressed switches or nearby magnetic interference can affect calibration. Disconnect the keyboard, lift it away from the desk, and reconnect it while holding it in the air without pressing any switches. Wait three seconds, then retest the key.

Can an MSI laptop swap the Windows and Fn keys?

Yes, supported MSI notebooks offer a key-swap switch for Windows and Fn in MSI Center or MSI Center Pro under General Settings. Change that switch back to your preferred arrangement, then test both physical keys. The control depends on the notebook model.
