To fix Outlook email notifications that are not working, enable mail alerts in Outlook, allow notifications in your device settings, and turn off any Focus or Do Not Disturb mode that silences them. Start with the Outlook settings for your version, then check the matching Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, or browser controls.

First, confirm that a fresh email reaches your Inbox. Mail that never arrives needs a connection or account fix, while messages that arrive without a banner or sound need notification settings checked.

The short version

  • Outlook settings: Enable mail notifications and remove filters that limit alerts to selected senders or accounts.
  • Device permission: Allow Outlook notifications, banners, and sounds in your operating system.
  • Silent modes: Turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb, or allow Outlook through it.
  • Delayed mobile mail: Review battery, background activity, and data restrictions before resetting the app.

Turn on mail alerts in your Outlook version

In new Outlook for Windows, open View > View Settings > General > Notifications. Under Notify me about, turn Mail on, expand it, and open New email. Set Notification style to Desktop and turn Only from favorite people off to receive alerts from other senders.

Next, expand Notifications in Outlook and turn its master control on. Under the account selection control, choose All accounts or include the account whose alerts are missing. For audible alerts, enable Allow notifications to play sounds and set Play sound under New email to Default or Custom rather than None.

In classic Outlook, open File > Options > Mail. Under Message arrival, select Display a Desktop Alert and Play a sound, then select OK. Allow initial account synchronization to finish before sending a fresh message from another account, because initial synchronization and a manual Send/Receive do not trigger desktop alerts.

On Mac, open Outlook > Settings > Notifications & Sounds. Enable Display an alert on my desktop and New message. You can also press Command + , to open Outlook preferences when your version uses that wording.

Allow Windows or Mac to display notifications

Windows can block alerts even when Outlook has them enabled. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications and turn Notifications on. Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select Outlook or Outlook (new), matching your installed version.

Enable that app's notifications, Show notification banners, and Show notifications in notification center. Turn on Play a sound for audible alerts. When using Outlook in a browser, check the browser's entry instead of the desktop Outlook entry.

On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications > Application Notifications > Microsoft Outlook. Enable Allow notifications and choose your alert style. On macOS 27, select Desktop under Alert Style, then enable Play sound for notification and Badge application icon as needed. Earlier supported releases use different alert-style labels.

Remove Focus and Do Not Disturb restrictions

For Windows 11, return to Settings > System > Notifications and turn Do not disturb off. Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically and disable unwanted triggers, such as scheduled hours, games, or full-screen apps. An active focus session can also interfere, so open Settings > System > Focus and select Stop focus session.

To keep Windows Do not disturb enabled while receiving Outlook alerts, open Set priority notifications > Apps > Add apps from the same notification settings page. Add Outlook, or add your browser for webmail.

On Mac, open Control Center > Focus and click the active Focus to turn it off. For an exception, open System Settings > Focus, select the Focus, then choose Allowed Apps > Notifications > Allow Some Apps. Select Add, choose Microsoft Outlook, select Add, and finish with Done. If the Focus keeps returning, review Set a Schedule and turn off unwanted schedules or automation.

Restore notifications on iPhone or Android

Inside Outlook mobile, open Settings > Quick Settings > Notifications. Enable Allow notifications and select From > All email. The alternative app layout uses Settings > Notifications > Mail > All; repeat the setting for each affected account.

Also review Settings > Notifications > Mail for active Do Not Disturb or Quiet Time muting. Remove timed muting or unwanted schedules. These app controls are separate from your phone's notification permission.

On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > Outlook and enable Allow Notifications. Under Alerts, select Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners as desired, then enable Sounds and Badges. For delayed alerts, choose Notification Delivery > Immediate Delivery, or exclude Outlook from Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.

Open iPhone Control Center > Focus and tap the active Focus to disable it. To keep that Focus, open Settings > Focus, select it, then choose Apps > Allow Notifications From > Add Apps > Outlook. When the Focus uses Silence Notifications From, remove Outlook from that list instead.

On Android, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > All apps > Outlook. Enable notifications and the relevant mail categories, then set the mail category to Alerting rather than Silent. Manufacturer wording varies, so use the corresponding notification controls on your phone.

On Samsung, first enable Manage notification categories for each app under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings. Return to App notifications > Outlook > Notification categories and select the mail category. Enable Allow notifications, select Alert, and choose Sound.

Swipe down to Android Quick Settings and turn Do Not Disturb off. For an exception in the current Modes layout, open Settings > Modes, select the mode, then choose Notification filters > Apps and allow Outlook. Review automatic activation when alerts stop at the same times each day.

Allow Outlook notifications in your browser

Outlook.com needs both its own notification setting and browser permission. Sign in, open Settings > General > Notifications, and turn Mail on under Notify me about. Expand it and choose the notification presentation and sound options.

In Edge, open the Outlook website, select View site information > Permissions for this site, and set Notifications to Allow. Chrome uses View site information and a Notifications switch. Restore that permission when it is off, including after Chrome removes permissions for an inactive site.

Firefox uses Menu > Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Notifications > Settings…. Set the Outlook site's Status to Allow and select Save Changes. Keep Firefox running to receive notifications. Some versions place these controls under Permissions and data.

For Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications and set the Outlook website to Allow. Then open macOS System Settings > Notifications > Application Notifications, select the Outlook website, and enable Allow Notifications. Safari notification availability depends on the Outlook website offering web notifications.

Check missing senders and mail that never arrives

When only certain messages lack alerts, check where those messages land. If you create a rule in Outlook that moves incoming messages, review its effect on alerts. In new Outlook or Outlook.com, open Settings > Mail > Rules and turn the relevant rule off. Classic Outlook uses File > Manage Rules & Alerts > E-mail Rules, where you clear its checkbox and select OK.

Messages from blocked senders also need attention. In new Outlook or webmail, open Settings > Mail > Junk email, select the blocked address or domain, and choose Remove. For third-party accounts in new Outlook, manage rules and blocked senders at the email provider.

If new mail never reaches Outlook, confirm that websites load and the account receives mail through webmail. If classic Outlook is working offline, use Send/Receive > Preferences > Work Offline to switch back online. After you change your Outlook account password, complete Outlook's updated sign-in prompts.

A full Outlook.com mailbox or Microsoft cloud quota can prevent new mail from arriving. Check your mailbox storage in Outlook.com Settings, remove unwanted items, and empty Deleted Items and Junk Email. Also review OneDrive storage and its Recycle bin when your Microsoft cloud storage is full.

Fix delayed background alerts and missing sounds

On iPhone, reopen Outlook after force-quitting it, because Microsoft says force-quitting stops background email downloading. Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Background App Refresh, choose Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, and enable Outlook's refresh permission.

Low Power Mode disables Background App Refresh. Turn it off under Settings > Battery > Power Mode on iPhone 15 and later, or directly under Battery on earlier models.

On Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps > Outlook and enable Allow background usage. Swipe down and turn Battery Saver off while checking delivery. With Data Saver enabled, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data and enable Outlook.

On Samsung, open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. In both Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps, use More options > Remove apps, select Outlook, and choose Remove. Open Never sleeping apps, select +, choose Outlook, and select Add. Newer layouts expose Battery directly in Settings.

When banners work but sounds do not, check volume and audio routing before resetting Outlook. On Windows, select the taskbar Speakers control, open Select a sound output, and choose your intended speakers or headphones. Open More mixer settings and unmute the relevant volume controls.

On Mac, open System Settings > Sound > Output, select your output device, raise Output volume, and clear Mute. Also raise Alert volume under Sound Effects.

On iPhone, turn off Silent mode, then open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the volume slider below Ringtone. If Match Ringtone Volume is off under Alerts and System Sounds, raise that slider instead. Models with a Ring/Silent switch use that switch to leave silent mode. On Android, press a Volume button, open Menu, and raise Notification volume. If the ring control is set to Mute or Vibrate, change it to Ring.

Update or repair Outlook when settings do not help

Update Outlook before taking steps that remove local data. New Outlook uses Microsoft Store > Check for Updates, while classic Outlook uses File > Office Account > Product Information > Update Options > Update Now. Select Enable Updates first if offered.

On Mac, use Help > Check for Updates, then select Update or Update All. For an App Store installation, open App Store > Updates and select Update beside Outlook.

For Android, search for Microsoft Outlook in Google Play Store and select Update. On iPhone, search for Microsoft Outlook in the App Store and tap Update. Reopen the app afterward.

Windows 11 can repair new Outlook through Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Outlook (new) > More > Advanced options > Repair. If repair fails, use Reset and set up the app again. Not every installation exposes these controls.

For classic Outlook, right-click Start, open Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or Office, and open its ellipsis menu to select Modify. Try Quick Repair first, then Online Repair > Repair if necessary. This repairs the Office suite unless Outlook is installed separately.

For mobile mail that also fails to synchronize, open Outlook Settings, select the affected account, and choose Reset Account. If synchronization still fails, use Delete Account > Delete From This Device, then add the account again and complete sign-in. On Samsung, you can first try Settings > Apps > Outlook > Storage > Clear cache, then reopen Outlook.

For persistent mobile problems, open Outlook's profile photo > ? > Contact Outlook Mobile Support. Before you contact support, take a screenshot on your device of the error or notification settings so you can describe them accurately. On Mac, use Help > Contact Support for a personal Microsoft account, or contact your organization's help desk for a work or school account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Outlook notify my Apple Watch but not my iPhone?

Apple Watch normally routes notifications to either your watch or your iPhone, rather than both. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, select My Watch, then Notifications, and review Outlook under Mirror iPhone Alerts From.

Can new Outlook reliably notify me about email when it is closed?

Microsoft's closed-app notification setup covers calendar alerts and does not guarantee email alerts when new Outlook is closed. Keep Outlook open when checking whether new email triggers a notification.

Why is an Outlook notification visible without the message text on iPhone?

Hidden previews can remove message content while leaving the notification visible. Open Settings > Notifications > Outlook > Lock Screen Appearance > Show Previews to choose your preview setting. Locking or hiding Outlook can also hide its notification content.

How do I fix notifications when my Outlook address is in Apple Mail?

Use Apple Mail's notification controls for an Outlook account configured in that app. Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications and select your Outlook account. Enable Alerts and Badges, and choose an audible Sounds option.

Why does the Outlook badge count differ from the mail I expect on iPhone?

Your Outlook badge count can follow Focused Inbox instead of all mail. Open Outlook Settings and select Badge count to change its scope.

Can Outlook Lite or Windows Mail replace Outlook for notifications?

Outlook Lite's mailbox functionality ended on May 25, 2026, so use the current Outlook mobile app instead. Windows Mail and Calendar can no longer send or receive mail or events; use current Outlook or Outlook.com.
