The latest Windows 11 cumulative security updates released on August 11, 2026 are KB5121000 for version 26H1, which moves that version to OS build 28000.2704, and KB5121003 for versions 25H2 and 24H2, which moves them to OS builds 26200.9168 and 26100.9168. Microsoft published optional previews on August 27, KB5120996 for 26H1 and KB5120998 for 25H2 and 24H2, but neither is the current security baseline. The build numbers and dates come from Microsoft's Windows 11 release information and the KB5121003 release notes.

Current Windows 11 updates at a glance

The table lists the current mandatory monthly security release for each supported Windows 11 version. Optional previews are covered further down. Microsoft's Windows 11 version 25H2 update history explains that the newest cumulative update includes earlier fixes for that version.

Windows 11 version 23H2 Home and Pro reached end of servicing on November 11, 2025. Enterprise and Education remain supported until November 10, 2026, according to Microsoft's 23H2 release-health page. Check the edition under Settings, System, About before using the 23H2 row.

Current Windows 11 issue statuses

Game launch failures tied to inpoutx64 are resolved

Reports after the August 11 updates involved ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and THE FINALS becoming unresponsive, closing, showing EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, or restarting the PC. Early coverage from BleepingComputer and Windows Latest accurately reflected Microsoft's investigation at that time.

Microsoft's current finding is more specific and supersedes the early causal framing. Its resolved-issues advisory says the problem was not caused by Windows updates. The affected systems had certain RGB-lighting peripherals or internal components that installed drivers with names such as inpoutx64.

Microsoft marked the issue resolved on August 26. A block now prevents inpoutx64 from loading on targeted affected devices, and Microsoft says the protection propagates automatically to non-managed consumer and business devices. A restart is required, and the safeguard can take up to 24 hours from its August 26 rollout time. Managed enterprise devices do not receive the block automatically.

Cursor customizations can reset after the preview

Microsoft is investigating reports that customized mouse cursors can become larger white cursors and lose animation settings after installing KB5120998 or later. The issue was opened on August 28 and was still listed as reported, not resolved, on the Windows 11 24H2 release-health dashboard when this page was last updated. Check that dashboard for the current status. It applies to versions 25H2 and 24H2, and Microsoft is still determining whether its products caused it.

Because KB5120998 is optional, a reader who values cursor customization can skip the preview while Microsoft investigates. This does not require removing KB5121003, which is a separate security update with lower build numbers.

Defender can show an incorrect warning

Microsoft confirmed an incorrect notification that says Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off even though Defender remains active and functioning. The issue is not assigned to a particular Windows update, and Microsoft is working on a future Defender update. The current status appears on the Windows 11 25H2 release-health dashboard, so it should not be labeled a KB5121003 defect.

The optional KB5120998 preview

Microsoft released KB5120998 on August 27 as a non-security preview for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. It advances the builds to 26200.9278 and 26100.9278. Installation is optional through Settings, Windows Update, Advanced options, Optional updates, according to the KB5120998 release notes.

The preview begins a gradual rollout of taskbar placement and sizing controls, Start layout adjustments, and a Search setting for web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Gradual rollout means an installed preview does not guarantee every listed feature appears immediately. The cursor issue emerged on release health after the KB notes initially listed no known issues, which is why the dashboard should be checked as well as the KB page. Microsoft shipped the equivalent 26H1 preview the same day, KB5120996, which moves version 26H1 to build 28000.2804 and is also optional.
