The "This Is An Xbox" campaign launched in 2024 promoted the idea that players could access Xbox games without owning Microsoft's hardware. Advertisements highlighted how virtually any internet-connected device could serve as an Xbox platform through cloud gaming services. The approach effectively decoupled the brand from its traditional console foundation.

New Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma ordered the campaign's termination shortly after taking leadership in February. A company spokesperson confirmed Sharma retired the initiative "because it didn't feel like Xbox." She is personally leading what Microsoft describes as a brand reset.

Internal discontent preceded the public cancellation. The campaign reportedly offended numerous Xbox employees who expressed concerns about brand dilution.

Former Xbox president Sarah Bond, who has since left Microsoft entirely, reportedly spearheaded the original marketing push.

Microsoft removed all traces of the campaign from its official channels earlier this month. The dedicated page on Xbox Wire now displays only an error message: "Oops! That page cannot be found." Related promotional materials scattered across Microsoft's domains have similarly vanished.

Sharma's appointment signaled a pivot back toward hardware emphasis. In her initial February statement, she pledged to "celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are."

The executive previously led Microsoft's CoreAI team before assuming gaming leadership following Phil Spencer's retirement.

The reversal coincides with Microsoft revealing Project Helix, the codename for its next-generation console that will begin shipping alpha versions to developers in 2027. Company documents describe the system as designed to play both console and PC games on unified hardware while delivering what executives promise will be industry-leading performance.

Sharma has committed to avoiding what she calls "soulless AI slop" flooding the ecosystem. Her vision emphasizes player-first experiences over short-term efficiency metrics, marking a philosophical departure from previous leadership approaches.
