MediaTek says its Dimensity 9600 Pro is the first flagship phone chip built on a 2nm process, with phones using it and the 9600M due this quarter.

MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro, a flagship smartphone processor that the company says is the first built on a 2nm process node. A second chip, the Dimensity 9600M, was introduced alongside it as an upcoming option aimed at a wider slice of the flagship market. The first phones carrying either chip are expected this quarter, though MediaTek gave no specific launch date and named no devices.

Neither chip has a disclosed price, and MediaTek did not say which handset makers will use them. That leaves buyers waiting on the phone makers themselves for the details that matter most: what the devices cost and when they arrive.

The 9600 Pro pairs a 2+3+3 all big core CPU layout with a dual-NPU setup. MediaTek says the design cuts multi-core power consumption by 61%, while single-core performance rises by up to 17% and multi-core by up to 15% versus the previous generation. On the AI side, the second-generation Super Efficient NPU cuts always-on power use by 40%, and the NPU 1090 can run on-device models with up to 30 billion parameters. MediaTek's figures come from demo device testing in its own labs.

The G2-Ultra NX GPU is rated for up to 27% higher peak performance, with peak power consumption down 24% and raytracing 18% faster. MediaTek lists gaming at up to 185fps, the same figure it gives for the 9600M. The Imagiq 1290 ISP brings 17EV imaging support, NPU-powered 60fps motion capture, 4K240 native direct-output ultra-slow-motion video, 4K60 AI True Color Tone and 4K120 cinematic log.

The platform is the first in the Dimensity line to support LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. MediaTek also points to a Dimensity Scheduling Engine that parcels out compute, power and memory, and to an AI Computing Fusion Architecture that combines CPU and NPU work.

The 9600M shares the Agentic AI Engine and Dimensity Scheduling Engine with its sibling. Its NPU is built for always-on perception and real-time imaging, and its ISP covers professional imaging and real-time tracking. MediaTek says its HyperEngine gaming tuning reaches up to 185fps.

MediaTek describes itself as the world's number one mobile chipset provider and says its chips power more than 2 billion connected devices a year. The company trades on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2454 and designs chips without running its own fabs.

What the announcement does not settle is the part shoppers care about: no handset names, no prices and no firm ship dates beyond the current quarter. MediaTek's performance numbers, meanwhile, are its own lab results rather than independent measurements.
