GitHub Copilot users can now choose GPT-6.1 Terra, which GitHub positions as a lower-cost option than GPT-6.1 Sol for routine coding agents and terminal tasks. The OpenAI model became generally available today for subscribers on Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise, although access is rolling out gradually. Charges follow the provider’s list rates through usage-based billing, with no specific rates disclosed.
Users select GPT-6.1 Terra through Copilot’s model picker in supported tools, including Visual Studio Code, Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot cloud agent. It is also available through GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android, giving eligible subscribers a mobile route to the model. GitHub says subscribers who cannot yet find it should check again as the rollout progresses.

GitHub describes GPT-6.1 Terra as intended for everyday agent-driven programming and work in the terminal, with an approach that groups work into focused steps for narrowly defined tasks. In preliminary tests, GitHub says it completed noticeably more C# and terminal tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra.
For organizations, access also depends on administrator controls: Business and Enterprise administrators can govern GPT-6.1 Terra through Copilot’s model policy. With default enablement active, newly added models become available automatically. Administrators can prevent that access by switching off the global default or disabling GPT-6.1 Terra individually in Copilot settings.
The addition follows September’s arrival of GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in Copilot, both of which also used usage-based billing. At that launch, GPT-6 Sol required Pro+, Max, Business or Enterprise, while GPT-6 Luna also supported Pro subscribers. GPT-6.1 Terra’s eligible subscriptions include Pro alongside those four other plans.
Separately, GitHub previously scheduled GPT-5.6 Terra for removal from Copilot on November 16, 2026. That retirement is set to cover Copilot experiences ranging from Chat and inline editing to agent modes and code completion. In its earlier retirement guidance, GitHub named GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna as suggested alternatives for GPT-5.6 Terra.
