Garmin has introduced Tacx Nēra, a $999.99 indoor smart trainer with integrated motion pods that let riders move backward, forward and from side to side while cycling. Available now, it comes with either a cassette already fitted or a preinstalled Zwift Cog and Click for virtual shifting. Both configurations carry the same suggested retail price, so choosing the Zwift option does not increase the trainer’s purchase price.
Garmin says Tacx Nēra measures cadence and power to within 1% accuracy, accommodates sprint output reaching 2,200 watts and simulates inclines up to 20%. The company says its integrated movement is intended to make indoor riding feel more realistic and comfortable. A race mode is designed to respond quickly during attacks and breakaways when used with select training apps.
The Zwift Ready configuration supports virtual gear changes in ROUVY and Zwift, with an active subscription required for those services. Buyers choosing that version who are new subscribers can also receive a free Zwift membership offer. Integrated Wi-Fi provides another connection option for virtual races in those two apps.
Riders can configure the trainer through the Tacx Training app, which also provides workouts at no charge. A Tacx Nēra purchase includes 45 days of premium access, adding courses based on real locations around the world, challenges and badges. Free Garmin Coach plans can be created through the Garmin Connect app and then followed in the Tacx Training app.
Tacx Nēra also pairs with Tacx Alpine, Garmin’s gradient simulator, which can reproduce slopes reaching 25% uphill and -10% downhill. That accessory offers virtual steering and additional functions through compatible apps, including Zwift and the Tacx Training app. Tacx Nēra itself has a 20% simulated incline limit, compared with Tacx Alpine’s 25% uphill figure.
For training control, riders can link a compatible smartwatch or Edge cycling computer to Tacx Nēra. Garmin Connect brings together indoor cycling records and outdoor rides, alongside health and recovery information collected by a compatible smartwatch or smart band. Garmin says that combination is intended to give cyclists a broader view of their fitness and performance.
