To restore a missing toolbar in Word on Windows, select Ribbon Display Options at the ribbon’s lower-right corner, then choose Always show Ribbon. In Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2024, you can also press Ctrl + F1 to expand a collapsed ribbon. The ribbon contains the tabs and editing commands across the top of Word.
If a different bar has disappeared, use the fix for the Quick Access Toolbar, floating Mini toolbar, ruler, or macOS menu bar. Start with its visibility controls before resetting customizations or repairing Office. The Windows desktop steps cover Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 unless specified otherwise, and installation repair uses Windows 11 menus.

Expand the ribbon on Windows
When the tabs remain visible but the buttons underneath them disappear, double-click a ribbon tab to expand it. Pressing Ctrl + F1 also toggles the expanded state.
To keep the ribbon visible, select Ribbon Display Options at its lower-right corner and choose Always show Ribbon. If selecting a tab temporarily reveals the commands and displays a pin icon, select that pin to keep the ribbon expanded.
Bring back tabs hidden by a viewing mode
If every tab has disappeared in full-screen mode, select the ellipsis at the upper right or press Alt to reveal the ribbon temporarily. Then select Ribbon Display Options > Always show Ribbon.
To leave Read Mode or Focus mode, press Esc to return to the normal document interface. To turn off Immersive Reader, press Alt + W, then L, then 2.
When Word displays an upper-right Viewing or Reviewing menu, open it and choose Editing to restore editing controls. This applies to Word for the web and current Windows versions displaying that menu. If Editing is unavailable, request editing permission from the document owner.
Restore the ribbon or menu bar on Mac
In current Word for Mac, open the View menu and select Ribbon, or select the down arrow at the ribbon’s right edge. In Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 for Mac, press Command + Option + R to toggle the ribbon’s expanded state.
If the macOS menu bar above Word has disappeared, move the pointer to the top of the screen to reveal it temporarily. On macOS versions with the Menu Bar settings pane, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Menu Bar. Set Automatically hide and show the menu bar to Never to keep the system menu bar visible.
Show the toolbar in a browser or mobile app
In Word for the web, move your pointer to the top of the browser window to reveal hidden controls. Open Ribbon Display Options and choose Always show ribbon. Select Classic Ribbon for the full layout instead of Single Line Ribbon.
Press Ctrl + F3 to toggle the web ribbon’s expanded state. With touch, scroll upward or tap the title bar to reveal it. Using a Windows keyboard, you can also press Ctrl + F6 or Windows + Alt to invoke the ribbon.
On an Android tablet, tap the ribbon’s up/down-arrow control. On an Android phone, tap the edit icon or the up/down-arrow control to expand it. On iPad, tap a ribbon tab such as Home; on iPhone, tap the edit icon.
Restore a missing tab or contextual toolbar
If only one tab is missing on Windows, open File > Options > Customize Ribbon. Under Main Tabs, check Home, or the named checkbox for the missing tab, and select OK. You can then return to tasks such as tracking changes in Word or adding page numbers in Word.
On Mac, open Word > Preferences > Ribbon and Toolbar > Ribbon. In Customize the Ribbon, check Home or the corresponding checkbox for another missing tab.
To show Developer in Microsoft 365 or Word 2024 on Windows, open File > Options > Customize Ribbon, check Developer under Main Tabs, and select OK. On Mac, open Word > Preferences > Ribbon and Toolbar, then check Developer under Customize the Ribbon > Main Tabs and select Save. For a related task, see how to add clickable check boxes in Word.
For missing table tools in Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 on Windows, click inside a table. This displays the Table Design and Table Layout tabs, so check your selection before resetting the ribbon.
Bring back the Quick Access Toolbar
In Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, right-click the ribbon and select Show Quick Access Toolbar. If the toolbar is in an unexpected position, open Customize Quick Access Toolbar and choose Show Above the Ribbon or Show Below the Ribbon.
To restore an individual button in that Windows interface, right-click its ribbon command and select Add to Quick Access Toolbar. For another command, open File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar, choose the command, and select Add >>.
For missing Quick Access Toolbar commands on Mac, open Word > Preferences and select Quick Access Toolbar. Select the missing command and use the add arrow to place it in Customize Quick Access Toolbar. Microsoft says commands absent from the available list are not supported there.
Restore the Mini toolbar or ruler
To restore the floating Mini toolbar in Microsoft 365 or Word 2024 on Windows, open File > Options > General. Under User Interface options, check Show Mini Toolbar on selection and select OK. Select text to display the toolbar.
If the missing bar is the ruler, open View and select Ruler. This control applies to Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 on Windows and Mac, as well as Word for the web.
Reset customizations only when needed
When a default Windows ribbon tab remains incomplete after you restore its visibility, open File > Options > Customize Ribbon. Select the affected default tab, then choose Reset > Reset only selected Ribbon tab.
To reset the entire layout, choose Reset > Reset all customizations in the same window. This removes existing ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar customizations. In Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, you can reset just the smaller toolbar through Customize Quick Access Toolbar > More Commands > Reset > Reset only Quick Access Toolbar.
Troubleshoot a toolbar that still will not return
If the Windows interface is malfunctioning, save your work, close Word, and reopen it. In Microsoft 365 or Word 2024, open File > Account > Update Options, select Enable Updates first if needed, then choose Update Now. If your organization manages updates, you may need IT assistance.
For a diagnostic check on Windows, press Windows + R. Enter the following command, then select OK:
winword /safeOffice Safe Mode does not load toolbar customizations, so use it to investigate the interface rather than recover a custom toolbar. Close Safe Mode and reopen Word normally afterward.
If the missing commands belong to an add-in, open File > Options > Add-Ins, choose Disabled Items under Manage, and select Go. Select the relevant item and choose Enable, then restart Word normally if necessary. A faulty add-in may be disabled again.
For a Microsoft-installed Mac copy of Microsoft 365 or Word 2024, open Word’s Help menu, select Check for Updates, and choose Update. For Microsoft 365 installed through the App Store, open App Store > Updates and select Update beside Word or Update All.
If the Windows problem persists, repair the installation. On Windows 11, right-click Start, select Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or Office, and select its ellipsis > Modify. For a Click-to-Run installation of Microsoft 365 or Office 2024, choose Quick Repair > Repair, or choose Online Repair > Repair for the more thorough option. Repair affects the Office suite and is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed toolbar fix.
