How to Manage Snapchat Messages When You Block Someone

When you block someone on Snapchat do the messages delete? Blocking hides your conversation but does not guarantee deletion of both people's history.

Blocking someone on Snapchat does not guarantee immediate deletion of both people's messages, although it hides the conversation from your view. It stops direct Snaps and Chats from that person and prevents you from saving or deleting items in the hidden conversation while the block remains. Delete your outgoing items or preserve anything you need before blocking.

The short version

  • Blocking: Your conversation disappears from your view, but both people's message history is not guaranteed to disappear immediately.
  • Deleting: Delete your outgoing messages and Snaps before blocking, while the conversation remains accessible.
  • Saving: Obtain an export or a separate copy before blocking because saved history may be removed over time after the friendship ends.
  • Clearing: Clearing a conversation from your feed does not delete saved or sent content.
  • Unblocking: Removing a block does not guarantee that old messages will return.

Decide what to remove or keep before blocking

Open the conversation in the Snapchat app on iPhone or Android. Decide which outgoing items you want to delete and which messages you need to preserve, then complete those actions before blocking. Once the block hides the conversation, you cannot manage its messages while the person remains blocked.

Snapchat says saved messages may be removed over time after a friendship ends. If you need a lasting copy, obtain an export or capture the visible content beforehand. Blocking cannot recall images, recordings, exports, or photographs of the screen that someone has already kept separately.

Delete messages and Snaps you sent

Open the conversation, press and hold a message you sent, then tap Delete. Repeat for the other outgoing items you want removed. This control covers your messages, Snaps, Bitmoji, Memories, and Camera Roll photos shared in the conversation, but it does not let you delete another person's text messages.

You can also delete outgoing Snaps after delivery or after some or all recipients have opened them, in accessible individual or group conversations. Press and hold the Snap, then tap Delete, including when the recipient has saved that Snap in Chat. Other participants can see that an item was deleted.

Snapchat attempts to remove deleted items from its servers and recipients' devices. Poor connectivity or an outdated Snapchat app can delay removal, so tapping Delete does not mean every copy disappears immediately. If removal is delayed, check your connection and keep your app current; the recipient's connection and app version can also affect removal.

Unsaving a message is a separate action. Tap a text message to save it, then tap it again to remove your save. A gray background identifies saved messages to everyone in the conversation, and removing your save is different from deleting an outgoing message.

Keep a separate copy of messages you need

For visible messages, you can take a screenshot on your device before blocking. On an iPhone with Face ID, briefly press and release the Side and Volume Up buttons together, then save the image using the screenshot interface. On Android devices with these capture controls, press Power and Volume Down together. Capturing content may notify the other participant, and a screenshot preserves only what is visible.

To request available saved history, sign in to the Snapchat accounts portal and click My Data. Choose the data categories, including Saved Chat History, then choose a date range or disable the date filter. Check the notification email address and click Submit.

When the export is ready, select See exports, click Download, and extract the ZIP archive. The export contains available retained data and does not recover deleted messages. Messages no longer retained after a friendship ends may be absent, so obtain the copy you need before blocking.

You can also save eligible Snaps inside the conversation, although this does not guarantee an archive after blocking. While viewing a photo Snap with no viewing limit or a looping video Snap, press and hold it and tap Save in Chat. The saved item becomes Chat Media.

Block the person after managing the conversation

After completing your deletion and preservation tasks, swipe right from Snapchat's Camera screen to open the Chat feed. Press and hold the person's name, tap Manage Friendship, then tap Block.

You can also open the conversation, tap the person's profile icon, and tap the three-dot menu. Select Manage Friendship, then tap Block. Both routes stop direct Snaps and Chats and hide the one-to-one conversation from your view.

Manage messages after someone is already blocked

You cannot save or delete items in the hidden one-to-one conversation while its participant remains blocked. To remove the block, tap your profile icon, open Settings using the gear icon, scroll down to your list of blocked users, then tap the × beside the username. You can also follow the steps to unblock someone on Snapchat when you want to change that contact restriction.

Unblocking does not guarantee that old saved messages will reappear. If the conversation becomes accessible, use the save and delete controls to manage the items still present. An export contains only available retained data, so it cannot restore deleted history either.

Clear the feed without deleting message content

Clearing a conversation removes its entry from your Chat feed. It does not delete saved or sent content, so use individual deletion first if you want to remove outgoing messages.

On iOS, open your profile and tap the gear icon for Settings. Under App & Privacy, open My Privacy & Data; under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data, then Clear Conversations. Tap the × beside the person.

On Android, open your profile and Settings, then under App & Privacy, open My Privacy & Data. Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Conversation. Clearing the entry does not erase the conversation's saved or sent items.

Set automatic deletion for future messages

Ordinary Chats expire by default 24 hours after everyone views them or 31 days after sending, whichever happens first. Saving, replying, or reacting can extend retention, and Community Group Chats use a different default. These timers are separate from blocking and should not be treated as an immediate purge.

To change the schedule for subsequent messages in an accessible individual or Group Chat, swipe right from the Camera screen and press and hold the friend or group name. Tap Chat and Notification Settings, then Delete Chats…. Choose After Viewing, 24 Hours After Viewing, 7 Days After Viewing, or Never.

Anyone in the conversation can change this setting, and a status message announces the change. Existing messages retain their earlier schedule, so choosing a shorter interval does not retroactively erase everything already retained. Use individual deletion for outgoing items you want to remove now.

Manage shared groups separately

Blocking someone does not remove you from a shared Group Chat or hide their group messages. To delete your own outgoing items while staying in the group, open it, press and hold each message or Snap, then tap Delete. Other participants can see the deletion indicator.

To leave a normal Group Chat, swipe right from the Camera screen, press and hold the group entry, then tap Leave Group. Snapchat says leaving clears your outgoing Snaps and Chats from that group, including items saved there. Clearing the group's feed entry is a different action and does not mean you have left.

If your account has public Topic Chats, manage those posts separately from normal Group Chats. To remove your Topic Chat post, press and hold it and tap Delete; to leave, open the three-dot menu and select Leave Silently. Leaving a Topic Chat does not clear your existing posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you mute someone instead of blocking them?

You can mute Chat or call notifications while keeping the conversation accessible. Swipe right from the Camera screen, hold the person's name, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then tap Notification Settings. Turn on Mute Chats, Mute Calls, or both; messages still arrive and are not erased.

Does clearing Snapchat's cache delete messages?

Clearing Snapchat's cache does not delete Chats, Snaps, or Memories. You can use it for troubleshooting, but it does not remove message content.

Can you report someone's messages before blocking them?

You can report a specific message while the conversation is accessible. Hold the message and tap Report before blocking. Snapchat reviews reports and may remove violating content or restrict an account, but reporting does not guarantee removal.

Does removing a friend delete the conversation immediately?

Removing a friend is not an immediate message-deletion command. The person may still be able to contact you depending on your privacy settings. Delete outgoing items you want removed before ending the friendship.

Does deleting your entire Snapchat account recall messages?

Deleting your account does not guarantee recall of copies held by recipients. It affects your whole account, and Snapchat retains some records for legal, security, or business purposes. Account deletion should not be treated as a substitute for deleting specific outgoing messages.
