To unblock someone on Snapchat, open your Profile, tap the gear icon for Settings, open Blocked Users or Blocked, and tap the X beside their username. The route to your blocked list depends on the labels in your app. Use Snapchat on iPhone or Android and sign in to the account that blocked the person.

The short version

  • Start in your account: Open your Profile and tap the gear icon to reach Settings.
  • Find the list: Open My Privacy and Data and then Blocked Users, or use the direct Blocked entry.
  • Remove the block: Scroll to the person's username and tap the X beside it.
  • Reconnect separately: Use the magnifying-glass icon and + Add to add the person again if necessary.

Open your Snapchat account settings

Open Snapchat in the account you used to block the person, then tap the profile icon at the top to open your Profile. Tap the gear icon to open Settings.

The block belongs to your Snapchat account. If you use more than one account, open the blocked list in the account where you placed the block.

Find your blocked list

Under App & Privacy, tap My Privacy and Data. Find the Who Can See section, then tap Blocked Users to open the list.

If your settings layout has a direct Blocked entry, use that route instead. From Settings, scroll to Blocked and tap it. Snapchat does not assign these layouts to a specific operating system, so follow the labels in your app.

Both routes lead to the same account-level action. Once you reach your blocked list through the route available in your app, you can remove the person's block there.

Remove the person from the blocked list

Scroll through the list manually until you find the person's username. There is no search function inside the blocked-user list, so keep scrolling if the name is farther down. Check that you have the intended username, then tap the X beside it to unblock that person.

Stay in the blocked list to locate the account. Blocked accounts disappear from Snapchat Search results, so entering the person's name in ordinary friend search will not help you remove their block.

Add the person again if needed

After removing the block, tap Snapchat's magnifying-glass icon and enter the person's name or username. Find the person and tap + Add if you need to add them as a friend. Adding someone does not remove an existing block, so complete the unblock action before trying to reconnect.

If you still cannot add the person, a block on their side may be the reason. You cannot add someone who has blocked you, even after removing the block you placed on them.

Friendship status and contact or privacy settings can still affect whether you can communicate. Treat adding the person again as a separate step, with those settings still affecting contact after the block is removed.

Previous Chat history may not all return after you unblock someone. Reconnecting with the person does not guarantee that every earlier conversation will be restored.

Use your phone instead of Snapchat on the web

Snapchat on the web does not support privacy-setting updates. If you are using Snapchat on a computer, switch to the Snapchat app on iPhone or Android and sign in to the same account. Open Settings and follow the blocked-list route that matches your app's labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will all my old chats return after I unblock someone?

Not necessarily. Snapchat warns that previous Chat history may not all return, so unblocking does not guarantee that every earlier conversation will be restored.

Why can't I add someone after unblocking them?

If the other person has blocked you, Snapchat says you cannot add them. Removing your own block does not remove a block they placed on your account.

Does unblocking someone guarantee that you can communicate again?

No, friendship status and contact or privacy settings can still affect communication. Removing the block alone does not guarantee that you can exchange messages again.

Why can't I find a blocked person in Snapchat Search?

Snapchat says blocked accounts disappear from Search results. You need to remove their block through your account settings before using friend search to find them.
