Find the missing app in your Fire TV app list, then choose Move or Reorder to restore its placement on the Home screen. On the redesigned interface, highlight the app and hold Select to open its options; on the classic interface, open Apps, highlight the app, and press Menu. If the app is absent from the full list, sync Amazon content, restart Fire TV, and search the Appstore.
A missing shortcut does not always mean the app was uninstalled. Check whether one app has disappeared, several apps are missing, or the entire Home screen cannot load to choose the next fix.
The short version
- Find it first: Check the full app list before reinstalling an app that is missing from Home.
- Restore placement: Use Move or Reorder, with the remote button sequence that matches your installed interface.
- Refresh missing content: Sync Amazon content, restart Fire TV, and check the network when multiple apps fail to appear.
- Reinstall carefully: Confirm the app remains available for your device before uninstalling it.
- Reset last: A factory reset removes account information and downloaded content.

Find the app and restore its Home placement
On the classic interface, select the Apps icon, also called the Applications icon, and browse for the missing app. If its icon shows a cloud, the app has been offloaded and you can redownload it; otherwise, select it to open it.
To change placement on the classic interface, highlight the app and press Menu. Choose Move or Reorder, then reposition it. Amazon excludes the first and second generation Fire TV and the first generation Fire TV Stick from main menu customization.
On the redesigned interface, highlight the app and press and hold Select. Choose Move or Reorder, then move it to your preferred position. Follow the interface installed on your device rather than choosing a sequence from the device name alone.
To open the app immediately, hold Alexa Voice and say “Open” followed by the app name. This works with supported apps on Alexa-enabled Fire TVs and bypasses the missing shortcut without necessarily restoring it. If your remote has a preset button for that app, press that button to launch it.
On Fire OS, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and choose Launch application. This settings workaround is not universal on Vega OS devices, so use app search or supported voice launching there instead.
Check your profile and sync Amazon content
A profile change can change the app arrangement you see. On the redesigned interface, press Menu, choose Fire TV Profiles, and select your intended adult profile. Check its Home screen before changing app settings or reinstalling anything.
For an app missing specifically from a Kids profile, switch to an adult profile and open Settings > Account & Profile Settings > Kids Settings. Select the child, choose Add Content, and manage the permitted content. Kids profiles are unavailable on Fire TV Cube devices and some televisions with Fire TV built in.
Next, open Settings > Account & Profile Settings > Sync Amazon Content. Return to Home and check the app list again. Syncing refreshes the account’s content information, but it does not repair every missing tile.
If the Settings or Appstore shortcut is also missing on the redesigned interface, press Menu or select the side menu icon. Choose Settings or Appstore to continue troubleshooting. You can also ask Alexa to “Go to Settings.”
Restart Fire TV to reload the interface
Open Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. On TCL Fire TV televisions, use Settings > Device and Software > Restart. After startup, check both Home and the full app list.
If you cannot reach the menus, disconnect the Fire TV’s power adapter for one minute, then reconnect it. With a Stick or Cube, disconnect power from the streaming device itself. With a Fire TV Smart TV, unplug its power cord from the TV or wall outlet for at least 30 seconds. You can also use this power cycle when an app or the interface fails to load.
For an unresponsive Fire TV Smart TV, Amazon also gives a remote restart sequence: hold Play/Pause and Select together for three to five seconds. If startup stops at the loading screen, follow the steps to fix Fire TV loading screen problems before continuing with app placement. If the remote does not respond, use the steps to fix a Fire TV remote so you can navigate the menus.
Restore the network connection when Home cannot load
Check your connection when Home is unavailable, app information fails to load, or downloads fail. Open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause to check network status. From an Unable to Connect message, select Network Diagnostics and follow its recommendations.
To reconnect, open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi and turn it off, then on. If that does not resolve the connection problem, highlight your network, press Menu, then press Select or OK to forget it. Reconnect using the Wi-Fi password.
For a router problem, unplug the modem and router for one minute. Reconnect the modem first, then the router, and retry Home or the app download. If only one shortcut is missing and other content loads normally, continue with the app’s installation checks.
Redownload missing or offloaded apps
Search for an app that is absent from the installed list. Open Find on the classic interface or Search on the redesigned interface, enter the app name, and select its listing. Choose Get or the Shopping Cart icon (Shopping Basket in the UK) and complete any account verification prompt.
A cloud icon identifies an offloaded app that you can redownload. Amazon says automatic offloading may occur after 60 days of nonuse when storage is low. To prevent future offloading on supported devices, open Settings > Applications > Auto Offload and turn it off.
Turning off Auto Offload does not reinstall an app or restore its shortcut by itself. Redownload the affected app, then check its placement. The feature is unavailable on devices with Kids profiles configured and on several older Fire TV models, including first and second generation Fire TV Sticks.
If insufficient storage prevents installation, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Select an unused removable app, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts before retrying the download. Some preinstalled apps cannot be uninstalled.
Repair an installed app that also fails to open
Use cache and data controls when the missing app is still installed but also fails to load. Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select the affected app, and choose Clear Cache. These controls troubleshoot the app itself and do not directly reveal hidden Home tiles.
Reopen the app after clearing its cache. If it still fails, return to the same screen and choose Clear Data, then open the app and sign in again. Clearing data resets saved app information, so make sure you can access the app’s account before proceeding.
On TCL Fire TVs, another repair option is to select Force Stop from the affected app’s settings and then reopen it. If the app still malfunctions, confirm that its Appstore listing remains available for your device. Choose Uninstall from its installed app settings, follow the prompts, and reinstall it from the Appstore. You may need to sign in again after reinstalling.
Update Fire TV and check app availability
Install available system updates through Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. On TCL Fire TV televisions, the path is Settings > Device & Software > About > Check for Updates. Complete any offered installation, then check the app list again.
When one app remains unavailable, check its provider’s official support information for supported devices, operating systems, regional availability, outages, and account requirements. Availability can differ between Fire OS and Vega OS. If support has ended, use the provider’s supported replacement or a compatible device.
If you are looking for the discontinued standalone Freevee app, open Prime Video for its former library. The Live TV tab also provides free live channels. There is no supported procedure to restore the standalone Freevee app.
If Amazon displays a warning that an app has been disabled for providing access to unlicensed content, read the warning and choose an alternative from the Amazon Appstore. Amazon says exceptions to that restriction are unavailable.
Factory reset only after simpler fixes fail
Reserve a factory reset for persistent, widespread problems after placement, syncing, restarting, connectivity, and updates have failed. It removes account information and downloaded content, so you will need to set up Fire TV again and reinstall available apps. Resetting cannot restore an app that is no longer supported.
Safely eject any external USB storage first. Then open Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults and choose to continue. On a Fire TV Smart TV that shows Device & Software instead, use Settings > Device & Software > Reset to Factory Defaults. Complete setup afterward, then install your apps and arrange their Home shortcuts. Check that you are using the intended Amazon account and profile.
When menus are inaccessible, safely eject expandable storage first, then hold Back and the Right side of the navigation circle together for ten seconds. Choose whether to continue or cancel on screen. Amazon warns that the reset proceeds automatically if you make no selection, so use this combination only when you are ready to reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my phone when the Fire TV remote is unavailable?
Yes, you can use the Amazon Fire TV app for navigation and typing. Connect your phone and Fire TV to the same Wi-Fi, open Amazon Fire TV, and sign in. Select the remote icon, choose Set Up New Fire TV, and complete the prompts to use the phone’s navigation and keyboard.
Why does a Prime Video subscription have no separate app on Home?
A service you subscribed to through Prime Video does not require the provider’s separate app. Open Prime Video with the Amazon account holding the subscription and access the service there. Availability varies by country.
Why does a newly set up Fire TV television offer only a few apps?
Some third-party Fire TV televisions offer a Basic experience with only selected apps. Complete online setup and Amazon registration to obtain the Full experience and access compatible Appstore apps. Amazon-manufactured Fire TV televisions do not offer the Basic experience.
Why can I see an app but get a PIN prompt when opening it?
Parental controls can restrict opening apps and purchasing content. Open Settings > Preferences > Parental Controls and enter the PIN to change the protections. A PIN prompt concerns access to the app, so changing these controls is not a general fix for missing Home shortcuts.
Can a customizable remote button open an app whose shortcut is missing?
Yes, if you have a compatible paired device and the app appears among the suggested assignments. Hold Star on the Fire TV Remote released in 2026, or 1 or 2 on Alexa Voice Remote Pro, for five seconds and select a suggested app. Press the assigned button to open it, or repeat setup to change its assignment. Customizable shortcuts are unavailable in Child profiles.
Does disabling Auto Offload also stop automatic cache cleanup?
No, turning off Auto Offload does not stop automatic cache cleanup. Amazon treats them as separate features and says background cleanup of unused app caches cannot be disabled.
