Your Fire TV remote has stopped responding, and you're stuck on the same screen. Start with fresh batteries and a quick pairing attempt, then work through the fixes below. The Fire TV mobile app also gives you a way to take control while you sort out the remote.
Start with fresh batteries
Low batteries leave the remote without enough power to respond.
Open the battery compartment using the instructions for your cover.
For a sliding cover, press at the arrow.
Slide the cover halfway down.
Lift it off.
For a latched cover, press directly on the arrow icon to release the latch first.
Put a thumb on the arrow indicator at the top of the battery cover and push down.
Slide the door down halfway, then roll the cover off the battery casing.
Install fresh AAA alkaline batteries.
Slide the cover closed until it clicks.
Try the remote again.
Bring the remote closer and pair it again
Move the remote within 10 feet (3 m) of Fire TV.
Hold Home for about 10 seconds, until the screen prompts you to press Play/Pause.
Press Play/Pause when prompted.
If pairing fails, remove the batteries for 30 seconds.
Reinstall the batteries.
Hold Home again to retry pairing.
Keep the remote close to Fire TV throughout the pairing attempt.
When Fire TV itself is unresponsive
A frozen or blank screen calls for a device check before another pairing attempt. You don't need a working remote to restart Fire TV by disconnecting its power.
For a Fire TV streaming device, disconnect its power cord or adapter.
Wait 3 seconds, or 60 seconds if the screen is frozen.
Reconnect the power.
For a Fire TV Smart TV, unplug the television instead.
Wait at least 30 seconds.
Reconnect the television.
If you have a working control and the menus respond, select Settings > My Fire TV > Restart instead.
For a frozen streaming device, another restart option is to hold Select and Play/Pause together for about 5 seconds. This requires a remote that still transmits the command.
If an external Fire TV device shows a blank screen, check that it uses the supplied power cable and adapter.
Use the television's Source or Input button to select the HDMI input connected to Fire TV.
If Fire TV connects through an HDMI hub, connect it directly to the television.
Get control back with your phone
The official Fire TV app restores navigation while you troubleshoot the physical remote.
Install Amazon Fire TV from Google Play or the App Store.
Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as Fire TV.
Open the app.
Sign in to your Amazon account.
Select the remote icon.
Choose Set Up New Fire TV.
Complete the on-screen setup prompts.
Use the app's navigation controls to open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote on your television.
Select your physical remote to pair it.
Read the remote's troubleshooting light
Press Alexa Voice. A flashing LED at the top indicates support for troubleshooting mode; skip to the next section if your remote doesn't support it.
Hold Rewind and Right together for 3 seconds.
Press Menu.
Once the LED turns green, press a button to see its diagnostic signal.
For a slowly flashing red light, replace the batteries with fresh alkaline batteries. That signal means battery power is low.
For a rapidly flashing red light, follow the remote reset procedure below.
For an orange light, the remote isn't paired. Restart Fire TV and wait until “Cannot detect your remote” appears on-screen.
Then hold Home for 10 seconds to pair the remote again.
For a white light, check Fire TV's power connection.
For a blue light, restart Fire TV.
To exit troubleshooting mode, hold Play/Pause and Up together for 3 seconds.
Press Menu.
Remove the batteries.
Reinsert the batteries.
Use the light's result to choose your next fix.
If only volume, power, or mute fails
An incorrect TV brand in Equipment Control prevents the remote from using the right controls for your television.
On a Fire TV streaming device with an equipment-control-capable remote, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV. This procedure does not apply to Fire TV Smart TVs.
Check the TV brand shown under Change TV.
If the brand is incorrect, select Change TV.
Complete the on-screen prompts.
Reset a remote that still will not respond
Try a remote reset after fresh batteries, pairing, and restarting have failed, or when the diagnostic LED flashes red rapidly. This procedure covers Amazon's “most Fire TV remotes” category and excludes the Alexa Voice Remote first generation and Basic Edition Remote.
Disconnect Fire TV from power and HDMI.
Wait 60 seconds.
Hold Left, Menu, and Back together for 12 seconds.
Release the buttons.
Wait 5 seconds.
Remove the remote's batteries.
Reconnect Fire TV.
Wait for the screen to display the remote-detection error.
Reinsert the batteries.
Press Home.
If the remote does not pair, hold Home for 10 seconds.
Choosing and connecting a replacement
Still no response? Check compatibility before buying another remote.
In your Amazon account, open Manage Your Content and Devices > Devices to identify your Fire TV.
Match that device against Amazon's remote compatibility table.
With a working remote or the Fire TV app, open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote.
Insert batteries into the replacement remote.
If Fire TV does not discover it, hold the replacement's Home button for 10 seconds.
Without a working control, unplug Fire TV instead.
Reconnect Fire TV.
Wait for the remote-detection error.
Insert batteries into the replacement.
If automatic pairing fails, hold Home for 10 seconds.
If the replacement still won't pair, return to the close-range pairing procedure above. A connected Fire TV mobile app gives you control in the meantime.
Frequently Asked Questions
What iPhone or iPad version does the Fire TV app require?
The App Store listing requires iOS 15.1 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 15.1 or later on iPad.
Should I factory-reset Fire TV if the remote still won't pair?
Leave a Fire TV factory reset until simpler troubleshooting has failed. It removes account information and downloaded content, and you need a working way to complete setup afterward. Mobile-app support does not guarantee that every model supports setup without a physical remote.
Why do the remote buttons work everywhere except one app?
A failure confined to one app calls for app troubleshooting. Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Select the affected app. Choose Clear Cache. If the app still fails, choose Clear Data.
Why can I navigate with the mobile app but not change the TV volume?
App volume and power controls require a supported Fire TV device and compatible HDMI-CEC functions on the television. Enable HDMI CEC in the television's settings; its label varies by manufacturer. Test volume and power with the physical Fire TV remote. If an external speaker also fails, configure it under Settings > Equipment Control on Fire TV.
