To fix Microsoft Teams backgrounds, turn on your camera, select a background in the meeting’s video effects, and apply it. If the effect still fails, check the camera preview, update Teams, and confirm that your app supports the effect you want.

Personal accounts and other Teams meeting screens use different background controls, so follow the path that matches your account. The Windows steps use Windows 11 menus.

The short version

  • Grayed out controls: Turn on Camera before choosing an effect in Teams personal.
  • Unchanged background: Select the effect, then use Preview and Apply during a desktop meeting.
  • Missing camera picture: Check the selected camera, physical shutter, and camera permissions.
  • Persistent app trouble: Update Teams before clearing its local cache or reinstalling it.

Turn on the camera and apply the background

In Teams personal on desktop, background controls can be grayed out when the camera is off. Open Meet, select Join, and turn on Camera on the screen before joining. Select Video effects, choose Backgrounds or Blur, then select Join now.

For the current Teams desktop meeting interface, open Calendar, select the meeting, and select Join to join a Teams meeting. On the screen before joining, open Effects and avatars and choose a background. For blur, select Blur, then choose Standard blur or Portrait blur.

During a desktop meeting, you can change your background in Teams through More actions > Video effects and settings > Video effects. Choose the background, select Preview, then select Apply. In Teams personal, choose Backgrounds instead, select your effect, and use Preview followed by Apply and turn on Video.

Use the background controls on your phone

On Teams personal mobile, turn on Camera if the background controls are unavailable. Before joining, open Meet > Join > Change background, then choose Blur, Add new, or a supplied background. Tap X, then tap Join now.

During a personal-account mobile meeting, open More actions > Change background, choose an effect, and tap Done. When Done is absent, tap X. On supported iOS and Android devices using the other Teams meeting interface, select Join > Background effects before joining, or More > Background effects during the meeting, then choose the effect and tap Done.

Upload a supported background image

For a custom desktop background, use a .JPG, .PNG, or .BMP image. Before joining a meeting in the current Teams desktop interface, open Effects and avatars > More video effects > Add new, then upload the image. Teams personal desktop also provides the upload control through More video effects > Add new.

If your custom image still fails, choose a supplied background or Blur through the same background controls. During a desktop meeting, finish the selection with Preview and the applicable Apply control. If your work or school account limits which backgrounds you can choose, ask your administrator to check the policies described below.

Restore the camera picture first

If your camera picture is missing or frozen, start with the camera itself. In Teams desktop, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices. Under the video settings, select the intended Camera from the dropdown and inspect its preview.

If only the background appears, remove the Teams effect by selecting None, then check the physical camera. Remove a lens cover, open the camera shutter, or press your device’s camera-privacy key if it has one. If your manufacturer’s camera app has a privacy mode, disable that mode; the key and app vary by device.

For an unavailable or frozen camera on Windows or Mac, close other apps using the camera. Disconnect and reconnect an external webcam, then restart the device and reopen Teams. Inspect the camera picture again before applying another background.

On supported desktop accounts, open Settings > Devices > Audio settings > Make a test call. Follow Test Call Bot’s instructions and inspect the camera result. This test is unavailable on Teams web, where you can check camera permissions instead.

On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera, enable Microsoft Teams when listed, and turn on Let desktop apps access your camera as applicable. Reopen Teams after changing access.

For Teams in a browser, also open the site-permissions menu beside the address. Set Camera to Allow, then reload Teams. On Windows, camera access must also be allowed in Windows settings.

For Teams work or school on supported macOS, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. Enable Microsoft Teams (work or school), then close apps and restart the device.

If the camera itself still fails on Windows 11, open Start > Camera to check it outside Teams, then run the camera troubleshooter in Get Help. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, and inspect Advanced options > Optional updates for camera drivers. Restart after installing updates.

For an intermittent or undetected camera, Windows also offers a basic driver option on devices that expose it. On Windows 11, open Settings, open the camera settings for your device, select Advanced camera options, and enable Basic camera driver mode if present. If that option is absent, continue with the camera troubleshooter and driver updates.

Update Teams and check which effects your app supports

When desktop Teams offers an update, select Update, then Update and restart Teams. Reopen Teams if necessary and try applying the background again. For mobile updates, Microsoft directs you to download and install Teams again from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store; Teams on the web updates automatically.

The web client supports blur, default backgrounds, and custom static backgrounds. Video backgrounds, Decorate, green screen, and video-effect filters require the desktop app, with any additional feature requirements still applying. Get the current app from the Microsoft Teams download page, choose your platform, install it, and sign in.

Switching back to classic Teams is not a supported fix. Use current Teams or the supported web client, then continue with the settings for the effect you want.

Ask your administrator to check background policies

On a managed work or school account, your assigned policy can limit effects to blur or to blur plus default backgrounds. Ask your administrator to open the Teams admin center, then Meetings > Meeting policies > the applicable policy > Audio & video. To allow all effects, the administrator selects All video effects under Participants can use video effects, then selects Save.

If you are an authorized administrator, you can also configure the applicable policy with PowerShell. Replace <policy> with the policy identity in this command:

Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -Identity <policy> -VideoFiltersMode AllFilters

The alternative values are NoFilters, BlurOnly, and BlurandDefaultBackgrounds. Check that the policy applies to the affected user.

For missing organization-supplied backgrounds, ask your administrator to open Meetings > Customization Policies > the applicable policy > Meeting Backgrounds. The administrator can enable Use background images from my organization, select +Add, upload PNG or JPEG images, and select Save. Your administrator also needs to check your Teams Premium license and policy assignment.

If a background or blur is forced, ask IT to inspect Meetings > Customization policies > your assigned policy > Meeting backgrounds, particularly Set as required and Apply background blur when no effect is selected. IT should also inspect the meeting policy’s Participants can use video effects restriction. Customization policies can restrict your choices and take precedence over meeting policies.

Check green screen and Windows Studio Effects

If green screen is enabled and the result looks wrong, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices > Video > Green Screen on a supported Teams desktop device. Turn off Green Screen when your backdrop is unsuitable. To configure it, use a uniformly colored, well-lit backdrop, enable Green Screen, select the preview’s color box, and use the color dropper on the backdrop.

Configure green screen separately on each device. If that setting is not involved, check whether Windows is applying its own camera effect. Windows Studio Effects operates at the system level on supported Windows 11 devices with the required NPU and camera hardware.

On a supported Windows 11 device, select the taskbar Network, Sound, or Battery icon, then select Studio Effects. Toggle Background effects to disable its blur or choose an available blur as an alternative. This changes the Windows effect rather than repairing Teams’ background processing.

Resetting Studio Effects restores its default settings. To do that, select Reset Effects.

You can also manage these effects on supported Windows 11 devices through Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, then select the front-facing camera and enable or disable the available Windows Studio Effects settings. Alternatively, search for Camera and open it, select the Windows Studio Effects icon at the upper right, and enable or disable the desired effects.

Clear the current Teams cache

Clearing local data is a later troubleshooting step for the current desktop client, with no guarantee that it fixes background effects. Use the current-app procedure for your operating system, since classic Teams uses a different cache location.

This deletes the contents of the current Teams cache directory. On Windows, quit Teams, press Windows + R, and enter this path:

%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams

Select OK, then delete the directory’s contents. Restart Teams and try applying your background again.

As an alternative, resetting the current Windows Teams app deletes its app data and personalization. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > More options > Advanced options > Reset. Restart Teams afterward.

The Mac procedure removes local Teams app data. Quit current Teams with Command + Q, then open Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Run these commands in order:

rm -rf "$HOME/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams"

rm -rf "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2"

Restart Teams after the commands finish. Choose the background again and apply it through the meeting’s video effects controls.

Reinstall Teams if the app still fails

Uninstalling removes the Teams app from your computer. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Teams, select More, then select Uninstall.

On a Mac, moving Teams to Trash removes the app. Quit Teams, open Applications, and move Microsoft Teams to Trash.

Download the current app from Microsoft’s Teams download page, install it, and sign in. Reinstallation is general app troubleshooting, not a guaranteed background fix. If the desktop effect still fails, the supported web client offers blur and static backgrounds as another option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware does Teams personal need for backgrounds?

Microsoft specifies at least 2 GB of RAM and a dual-core processor from 2018 or later for backgrounds and AR filters in Teams personal desktop. Check your device specifications against those requirements.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for background blur?

In Teams personal on Windows desktop or web, press Ctrl + Shift + P to toggle blur. On Mac desktop or web, press Shift + Command + P. These shortcuts use the documented US keyboard layout; check Settings and more > Keyboard shortcuts if a different shortcut configuration is active.

Do you need Teams Premium to upload a personal background?

Ordinary personal background image uploads do not require Teams Premium. The AI background feature named Decorate requires Teams Premium on supported desktop devices and is unavailable on the web. To use it, select Decorate in video effects, select Start, choose a theme, and select Generate, or Generate more for additional options. Select Apply and turn on video when you have chosen a result.

Can a Mac replace the background outside Teams?

During a video call, open the menu-bar Video menu and select Background. This requires macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon, or macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac using Continuity Camera with an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18 or later. Availability depends on the video app.

How can you delete personal uploads hidden by a required organization background?

Deleting the files removes the unwanted personal background images. When mandatory organization backgrounds hide your uploads in current Teams on Windows, open C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams\Backgrounds\Uploads and delete the unwanted personal images. This does not bypass your organization’s policy.
