Your Fire TV Stick remote navigates apps just fine, but the TV power and volume buttons do nothing. Pairing connects the remote to the Stick; Equipment Control sets up its TV controls. Start there to get those buttons working with a compatible TV.
Set up your TV in Equipment Control
This fixes a remote that controls Fire TV menus but still needs its TV buttons configured.
Open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV on Fire TV.
Check the TV brand shown under Change TV.
Select Change TV to configure your television or correct the brand.
Complete the on-screen instructions for your TV.
Test the remote’s Power button.
Test its Volume buttons. This procedure applies to Fire TV streaming devices with compatible remotes and supported TVs. Amazon excludes Fire TV Smart TVs from these instructions.
Check whether your remote has TV controls
A remote without dedicated TV-control buttons, such as the Alexa Voice Remote Lite, cannot provide those button controls.
Check for Power, Volume, and Alexa or microphone buttons. A compatible remote needs these controls for Amazon’s Equipment Control features.
If those buttons are missing, identify your Stick in your Amazon account under Manage Your Content and Devices > Devices.
Compare your Stick model with Amazon’s remote compatibility table. Compatibility differs between remote versions.
Choose a supported Alexa Voice Remote with TV-control buttons.
Pair the replacement using the steps below. TV-control setup comes after pairing.
Pair a remote that cannot navigate Fire TV
If the remote cannot control Fire TV menus either, connect it to the Stick first.
- 1.Insert batteries into the compatible remote.
- 2.For initial setup, turn on your TV with Fire TV connected and allow automatic pairing. For an additional or replacement remote, use your working remote to open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote.
- 3.If automatic pairing fails, place the remote within 10 feet of Fire TV.
- 4.Hold Home for about 10 seconds. During initial setup, press Play/Pause when the screen tells you to start. For an additional remote, complete the on-screen pairing prompts.
- 5.Return to Settings > Equipment Control to configure TV power and volume.
Add your soundbar or receiver
If a soundbar or AV receiver supplies your TV’s audio, set up that device too. Have its original remote ready before starting.
Open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > Add Equipment. Choose your soundbar or receiver. Follow the setup prompts; this route also lets you add a supported TV.
For automatic discovery, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > Advanced Settings. Enable Automated Device Discovery.
Accept the equipment-setup interface when Fire TV detects compatible equipment. Complete its instructions. Support depends on the connected TV, soundbar, or receiver; not every third-party device works with Equipment Control.
Enable HDMI-CEC for power and input switching
This lets compatible equipment respond to HDMI commands for TV power and input switching.
Enable HDMI-CEC in your television’s settings. Depending on the manufacturer, look for a name such as Anynet+, SIMPLINK, or BRAVIA Sync.
Open Settings > Display and Sounds > HDMI CEC Device Control on Fire TV. Amazon’s current pages label this menu either Display and Sounds or Display & Sounds, and the setting either HDMI CEC Device Control or HDMI-CEC Device Control. Both spellings point to the same screen.
Enable HDMI CEC Device Control.
Press Home on the Fire TV remote to request TV power-on and a switch to the Fire TV HDMI input. Your equipment determines the response. CEC is separate from infrared control, so it is not required for every infrared power or volume setup.
Troubleshoot a TV that still does not respond
Start by checking the TV brand under Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV > Change TV. An incorrect brand leaves the remote configured for the wrong equipment. Select Change TV to correct it and repeat setup.
If your TV is missing from the manufacturer list, select Change TV again to confirm. Wait for remote preparation. Choose Brand not listed at the bottom of the list and follow the prompts; this route applies only to setup interfaces that offer it.
On first- and second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max devices with infrared profile options, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV > Infrared Options > Change IR Profile > Find IR Profile. Follow the tests to find an alternate profile for your TV.
If those advanced options are absent, use the main Change TV procedure. Your TV’s compatibility determines which controls work.
