Spotify’s new native app is available today for selected Audi vehicles, letting drivers play audio through the car’s infotainment system without connecting their phone by cable or Bluetooth. Both Free and Premium listeners can use it, with initial availability covering the electric Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron, plus the A6, Q5 and A5. The app works with the vehicle’s audio system, displays and voice controls, and Spotify says playback is ready at startup after the initial sign-in.
Drivers can get the app through the Audi Application Store, either by installing it or updating their existing Spotify app on the infotainment system. Availability depends on the vehicle and market, and an Audi connect package may be necessary even though playback does not require a paired phone. Spotify says support for the upcoming Q9 and Q7 SUVs will begin when those vehicles reach the market.
The center screen changes what it allows depending on whether the vehicle is moving: video and lyrics are restricted during a drive, with simpler navigation and hands-free controls taking priority. Once parked, drivers can watch music videos or video podcasts across the main screen and follow lyrics in real time. Those parked features also work during EV charging stops.
Drivers can manage playback through the car’s own voice system using “Hey Audi,” and can speak directly to Spotify’s DJ to influence the next selections. Front passengers in supported vehicles can browse Spotify, read lyrics and watch videos using a separate display. Passengers can also join an in-car Spotify Jam by scanning a QR code, then contribute songs from their phones to the shared queue.
Account setup still involves a phone, although Spotify says listeners do not need to tether it or pair it with the vehicle afterward. To connect an account, users open Spotify on the car’s display and scan its QR code with a smartphone or personal device, or enter the displayed code through Spotify’s pairing page.
Spotify says Audi is its first automaker partner for the native app. Spotify says it plans to extend the experience to additional automotive partners globally over the coming year.
