Sony Santa Monica Studio announced two major God of War projects during PlayStation's February 12 State of Play broadcast. The studio confirmed development of a God of War Greek trilogy remake and shadow-dropped God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer available immediately on PS5.
God of War: Sons of Sparta launched today on the PlayStation Store for $29.99. The game is a canon prequel set during Kratos' youth at the Spartan Agoge training alongside his brother Deimos.
Developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, the 2D side-scroller features full two-player co-op and hand-drawn pixel animation.
The original voice actor TC Carson returns as Kratos for the first time in over a decade, narrating the story of duty, honor, and brotherhood.
"They must overcome threats that will put all their training to the test while confronting the true meaning of duty and honor,"
according to the game's official description.
Simultaneously, Santa Monica Studio confirmed the God of War Greek trilogy remake is officially in development. The project remains early in production but represents a full remake rather than a simple remaster.
Carson will reprise his role as Kratos in the remake, which covers the original three games released from 2005 to 2010.
The State of Play event exceeded 60 minutes and streamed simultaneously on YouTube and Twitch. Sony used the broadcast to promote its 2026 console generation while celebrating God of War's 20th anniversary year, which concludes in March 2026.
PS5 sales reportedly reached 8 million units worldwide in Q3 of fiscal year 2025, capturing 47.4% of the dedicated home console market. The console's dominance continues as Sony prepares for its next hardware cycle.
Additional announcements included Kena: Scars of Kosmora for PS5 and PC in 2026, Marathon's Server Slam open preview from February 27 to March 3, and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls arriving August 7, 2026.
Ghost of Yōtei Legends launches March 11 as a free co-op update, while Death Stranding 2: On the Beach comes to PC on March 20.
Saber Interactive announced a John Wick AAA game developed with franchise director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves. The project fits within the established John Wick timeline and incorporates signature elements from the film series.
PlayStation Plus subscribers gain access to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, and other titles in February's Game Catalogue. The service also adds Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Time Crisis to its Classics range later this year.
God of War: Sons of Sparta represents the first entirely new installment in the franchise since 2022's God of War Ragnarök. The Digital Deluxe Edition sells for $59.95 AUD ($44.95 AUD for Standard), offering immediate gameplay while fans await the Greek trilogy remake's eventual release.
