Google Fitbit Edge is now available, with a redesigned screen and physical buttons on the side for easier operation. The fitness tracker supports most phones using Android 11 or later or Apple's iOS 16.4 or later.
In its availability announcement, Google describes Edge as a device intended to span the working day and exercise sessions. Its design priorities include information that is easy to read at a glance and comfort for wear throughout the day.
The display is the largest and brightest Google has offered on a Fitbit tracker, according to the announcement. Google qualifies that claim with a comparison against earlier Fitbit trackers, tying the screen's size and brightness claims to that product category.
The tracker is shaped to follow the wrist's contours, and Google also highlights accessories as part of its styling. Physical controls take the form of side buttons, which the company presents as a way to simplify operating the device.
To use Edge, you need an internet connection, a Google Account and the Google Health app. Google's compatibility notice lists all three requirements alongside the minimum phone software versions, with support described as covering most phones.
Some functions also need a Google Health Premium subscription, purchased separately. Google makes that condition part of its feature availability notice, which says features can change and that availability and results can vary.
Google also specifies that Fitbit Edge is not designed for medical use. That limitation accompanies the same product notice that sets out the phone, account, app and subscription requirements.
