Google is rolling out skills in Gemini to users worldwide, a feature that lets people save a set of instructions once and run it again whenever they need it. The company says skills are already live in Gemini Spark and are now arriving in Gemini chat globally. Skills are meant to take over from Gems for task-specific instructions, and Google has not said what the feature costs.
Users invoke a skill by typing a forward slash followed by its name, and several skills can run at the same time. Google offers the example of combining a writing style skill with a brand guidelines skill, so one request carries both sets of rules. A skill can also be set up to pull three to five distinct viewpoints on a topic, and Gemini can build a custom skill out of a chat automatically.

The feature reaches Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education accounts in the coming weeks, though Google gave no exact date for that access. Starting today, skills can also carry reference files, including plain text documents, PDFs, and images. In the coming weeks they will gain sharing, Drive files, and Notebook notebooks. Google says Gemini picks up a user's writing style across Workspace apps.
Skills are not just for writing. Google says they can outline slides, draft talking points, and prepare Q&A material, which points them at recurring presentation work rather than one-off prompts.
Gems will not survive the transition. Support for Gems ends in November for personal accounts, in March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit users, and in June 2027 for Workspace education. Google says Gems will be migrated into skills automatically once they go away, and it points users to a help center article on the change. Google also said its Opal mini-app experiment turns down in November.
The rollout follows Google's April launch of Chrome Skills, which let desktop users running Chrome in US English save prompts from their chat history as shortcuts. That library, reached through a slash command or a plus button, synced across logged-in devices and sat inside the Gemini side panel. Those skills needed no paid AI subscription and asked for confirmation before sensitive actions.
The timing matters for anyone who has built a library of Gems. Personal account holders have roughly a month before support ends, while Workspace administrators have until next year to plan the shift.
