Chrome users can now turn repetitive Gemini AI prompts into reusable one-click tools through a new feature called Skills. The workflow automation tool eliminates the need to retype common instructions like calculating recipe nutrition or comparing product specs across tabs.

Google launched Skills today for Chrome desktop browsers set to US English. The feature integrates directly with Gemini in Chrome's sidebar, allowing users to save any prompt from their chat history as a permanent shortcut.

Once saved, Skills appear in a library accessible by typing forward slash (/) or clicking the plus button below Gemini's prompt box.

Skills run immediately after selection but maintain the same security protocols as manually typed prompts. When a Skill involves sensitive actions like adding calendar events or sending emails, Gemini still requests user confirmation before proceeding.

This prevents automated workflows from executing without oversight on pages containing personal information.

The desktop version synchronizes saved Skills across devices where users are logged into the same Google account. Early testers created Skills for calculating protein macros in recipes, generating vegan ingredient substitutions, and comparing product specifications while shopping across multiple browser tabs.

Google is launching a premade Skills library offering common workflows for productivity, shopping, recipes and budgeting.

Access requires no paid AI subscription and activates automatically for Chrome installations with US English language settings. The rollout began earlier this week and may reach users gradually over coming days. For now, Skills remain confined to Chrome's Gemini side panel rather than extending to other browser components.
