ChatGPT now serves 900 million weekly active users, putting OpenAI's flagship chatbot within reach of an unprecedented milestone for artificial intelligence services. The figure represents a 350 percent surge from just 18 months ago, when the platform counted 200 million weekly users.
More than five percent of those active users pay for subscriptions, translating to over 50 million consumer subscribers according to OpenAI's announcement. January and February are projected to become the company's largest months ever for new paid sign-ups as adoption accelerates.
The growth spurt comes alongside a massive $110 billion private funding round that values OpenAI at $730 billion. Amazon contributed $50 billion to the investment, with Nvidia and SoftBank each adding $30 billion according to reports.
Weekly usage has climbed steadily from 300 million in December 2024 to 500 million by February 2025 before reaching the current level. That progression means ChatGPT added roughly 400 million weekly users in just three months earlier this year.
OpenAI says people increasingly rely on ChatGPT for learning, writing, planning, and building projects. The platform also counts more than nine million business subscribers, a fourfold increase since September.
Competitor Anthropic reports its free Claude user base expanded by 60 percent since January with paid subscribers doubling, though specific numbers weren't provided. Meanwhile, ChatGPT introduced an $8 Go Subscription tier that includes advertisements earlier this year.
Apple's integration of ChatGPT into Siri through iOS versions has expanded OpenAI's reach across hundreds of millions of devices. The partnership gives iPhone users direct access when Apple Intelligence cannot answer queries.
With current momentum, ChatGPT could become the first AI service to surpass one billion weekly active users later this year.
