Apple has tested a clamshell-style iPhone Flip, according to a supply chain leaker. The company is reportedly developing the flip-style foldable alongside its upcoming book-style iPhone Fold.

Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital reported that Apple officially tested the iPhone Flip design. Development appears further along than previously indicated, though mass production remains undetermined.

The iPhone Fold launches this fall as part of Apple's iPhone 18 series. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 will reportedly feature a similar crease-free display, with Samsung also developing a wider Fold model matching the iPhone Fold's aspect ratio.

Apple's first foldable arrives in September 2026, according to multiple reports. The book-style device will feature a 7.7-7.8-inch inner display optimized for multitasking and media consumption.

Following the Fold, analysts predict Apple will release the clamshell iPhone Flip emphasizing portability. The Flip would feature a 3.5-inch outer display for notifications, expanding to approximately 6.8 inches when unfolded.

Production estimates suggest 15-20 million iPhone Flip units for 2026, signaling strong consumer demand expectations. Mass production of the iPhone Fold begins in Q3 2026, coinciding with the iPhone 18 series launch.

Pricing positions the iPhone Fold around $1,899 and the iPhone Flip near $1,099. These premium prices target enthusiasts willing to invest in cutting-edge foldable technology.

Counterpoint Research predicts 2026 will see book-type foldables outsell flip-type devices for the first time. The iPhone Fold is expected to drive this shift, with book-type devices projected to capture 65% of the foldable market this year, up from 52% in 2025.

"Apple has explored the clamshell concept internally. He noted the product remains 'far from guaranteed to reach the market' but said Apple believes its foldable will stimulate category demand."

The earliest possible iPhone Flip launch is fall 2027, though 2028 or later appears more likely. Apple will gauge market response to the iPhone Fold before committing to Flip production.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold7 outsold the Galaxy Z Flip7 for the first time in 2025, according to Counterpoint Research. The refined form factor, slimmer and lighter than previous models, contributed to this shift.

Apple tests foldable panels for a five-year lifespan, with reinforced hinges and displays designed to prevent creases. Water resistance and titanium frames further enhance durability for both Fold and Flip models.

Market forecasts predict approximately 30% growth in the foldable segment by 2026-2027. Apple's entry into the market is expected to accelerate adoption and influence competitor strategies across the industry.
