Apple is breaking a decade-long habit with the iPhone 18 lineup. For the first time. The company is splitting its launch: only the Pro models and the long-awaited foldable ship this September, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e won't arrive until spring 2027. That means the Pro lineup carries the full weight of Apple's fall event. And based on supply chain reports and leaks tracked by MacRumors, it's shaping up to be the most technically interesting iPhone cycle in years.

A camera that physically adjusts. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be the first iPhone with a variable aperture lens. Like the human eye, the aperture mechanically widens in low light and narrows in bright conditions, giving real hardware control over depth of field and exposure rather than relying purely on software.

Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Xiaomi's 13 Ultra tried this before, but Apple's implementation with a larger sensor could set a new bar for mobile photography. The variable aperture is reportedly a Pro Max exclusive at launch, mirroring the strategy Apple used with sensor-shift stabilization on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The smaller Pro gets enhanced telephoto lenses instead.

Both models reportedly gain a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, up from 18MP.

A20 Pro: Apple's first 2nm chip. Both Pro models run the A20 Pro, built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process. Analyst projections tracking TSMC's production roadmap point to roughly 15% faster CPU performance and up to 30% better power efficiency compared to the 3nm A19 in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Both models should carry 12GB of RAM, with tighter chip-RAM integration that keeps more AI tasks on the device rather than routing through servers.

Apple is also swapping Qualcomm for its own C2 5G modem, which should improve power management and wireless performance.

A smaller Dynamic Island, finally. Apple plans to move one Face ID component, the flood illuminator, underneath the display. That shrinks the Dynamic Island noticeably on both Pro models.

It's not full under-display Face ID (Apple reportedly pushed that to a future generation), but the cutout will be less intrusive. Leaked images from X accounts @earlyappleleaks and Ice Universe show prototypes and screen protectors with a significantly smaller pill-shaped notch.

Battery gets a serious bump. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to pack 5,100 to 5,200 mAh, the largest cell ever in an iPhone. For reference, the iPhone 17 Pro Max launched with 4,685 mAh. That difference could push battery life toward 40 hours on a single charge.

What stays the same. This is not a redesign year. Apple carries over the titanium frame and triple-lens camera layout from the iPhone 17 Pro. The 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes remain unchanged. A new Dark Cherry finish (deep red-to-burgundy) joins Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has warned the 18 Pro could feel "underwhelming" in terms of exterior changes, but the internal upgrades tell a different story.

The foldable elephant in the room. Joining the Pro models in September is Apple's first foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. Bloomberg's Gurman reports it will "cross the $2,000 threshold." The device is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch outer display and roughly 7.8-inch inner display at a squat 4:3 aspect ratio, with a titanium and aluminum build.

The calendar shift matters. Anyone on an iPhone 14 or older looking to upgrade this fall has one option: the Pro. The standard iPhone 18 won't arrive until early 2027, a strategic departure from the annual all-in-one launch Apple has held for nearly a decade. The announcement is expected in early September, with pre-orders and shipping within the same month.
