Fifteen iPhone 17 Pros will replace traditional broadcast cameras for an entire Major League Soccer match this Saturday, the first time a major professional live sporting event has been captured exclusively on a smartphone. The LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match streams live on Apple TV at 7:30 p.m.

PT from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. It arrives on the final weekend of MLS play before the regular season pauses for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America.

Apple announced the milestone Thursday, developed in partnership with MLS. Crew members wielding 15 iPhone 17 Pros will be stationed throughout the venue, capturing team warmups, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and stadium atmosphere alongside live match footage. The phone's compact size, Apple says, enables "dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action" that bulkier rigs cannot reach. The iPhone 17 Pro packs three 48MP Fusion cameras with pro-level video features including Apple Log 2, which captures a wider color gamut in ProRes or HEVC codecs. The phone effectively offers the equivalent of eight lenses in a pocket-sized body.

This Saturday's broadcast is the culmination of a year-long experiment. Apple first tested iPhone-powered sports production during a September 2025 Friday Night Baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. The iPhone 17 Pro captured select moments and cinematic in-stadium footage. That single-game trial earned recognition from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which added an iPhone used in the broadcast to its permanent collection.

Strong fan response pushed Apple to expand the program. The company deployed iPhones for the MLS Cup in 2025 and integrated the technology into regular production rotations for both Friday Night Baseball and MLS broadcasts throughout the 2026 season. The LA Galaxy enter the match as the defending MLS Cup champions. Houston Dynamo FC currently sit seventh in the Western Conference standings. The full broadcast runs on Apple TV, available for $12.99 per month or through the Apple One bundle.
