Anthropic is spending $150 million to embed 1,000 AI-trained workers inside nonprofits across the US, betting that putting Claude expertise directly into under-resourced organizations is the fastest path to spreading the technology's benefits. The program, called Claude Corps, opens applications today for its first cohort of 100 fellows starting in October 2026. Within 12 months, Anthropic plans to scale to 1,000 fellows placed at 400-plus host organizations including Braven, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, the Montgomery County Food Bank, and Team Red, White & Blue.
Fellows receive a full-time salary of $85,000 with benefits, a CodePath mentor, Anthropic office hours, and an expansive Claude token budget. Host organizations get a $10,000 implementation grant and free Claude credits, the fellow's labor costs them nothing.
The program is structured as a three-way partnership. Anthropic funds and leads strategy.
CodePath, the largest collegiate computer science educator in the US, acts as the fellows' employer of record and runs programming. Social Finance manages the philanthropic capital, handles measurement and evaluation, and is building a financial vehicle to scale the model beyond Anthropic's initial commitment.
Applications close July 17 for the first cohort. Two more cohorts begin in January 2027 and August 2027.
Anyone over 18 with under two years of full-time work experience is eligible, regardless of educational background.
Claude Corps arrives alongside a separate $200 million commitment Anthropic announced Wednesday to research AI's economic impact on jobs. CEO Dario Amodei published an essay arguing the government should promise economic support for workers displaced by AI, warning the technology could produce labor market disruptions larger and longer-lasting than anything before.
Anthropic President Daniela Amodei told the Associated Press the company hopes Claude Corps will become a pillar of its strategy for managing AI's risks. "We're hoping it's a good idea that can take root and that other people can build on and learn from," she said. The program will be evaluated after its first year to determine whether it continues and expands.
The timing is notable. Anthropic, valued at $965 billion, submitted a confidential IPO filing earlier this month.
The company's seven co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their wealth. Claude Corps is designed as a replicable model, Anthropic says it will open-source the core technology and infrastructure so others can build similar initiatives, potentially expanding outside the US.
