You want Find My to share your Mac’s location instead of your iPhone’s, but there is no Mac option to select. Apple does not support using a Mac as the source of your location shared with people. You can switch to another iPhone or an iPad, manage sharing from your Mac, or stop sharing entirely.

Understand why your Mac cannot replace your iPhone

The missing option is a Find My limitation: a Mac can manage location sharing, but it cannot supply your shared location to people.

On macOS Tahoe 26, sharing through the Mac requires a supported mobile device signed in to the same Apple Account. There is no Use This Mac as My Location option. To move your shared location away from your current iPhone, select another iPhone or an iPad using the steps below.

Turning on Find My Mac lets you locate the computer itself. Enabling Location Services gives Find My permission to locate it. Neither setting makes the Mac your location source for people.

Choose another iPhone as your location source

On the iPhone you want to share from, open Find My > Me. That iPhone must use the same Apple Account as your original phone.

Turn on Share My Location.

Tap Use This iPhone as My Location if the button appears.

Check Sharing From to confirm which iPhone is supplying your location, including when the source-selection button is absent. Switching back uses the same steps on your original iPhone.

Use an iPad instead

An iPad signed in to the same Apple Account is another supported source. Apple does not require a cellular iPad model for this procedure.

On the destination iPad, open Find My > Me at the bottom-left.

Enable Share My Location.

Tap Use This iPad as My Location if the button appears.

Check Sharing From to confirm that the intended iPad is the source. This also shows the current source when the button is absent.

If sharing fails, check the Find My location permission under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Find My.

If the app method does not switch the source, try Settings > your name > Find My > Use this [device] as My Location on the iPhone or iPad you want to use.

Manage your existing sharing from the Mac

This enables sharing and shows which mobile device supplies your location.

Open Find My on the Mac.

Click People.

Select Me.

Click the Info button on the map.

Turn on Share My Location under My Location.

Check the source device displayed below My Location. Your location still comes from that mobile device while you control sharing on the Mac.

Stop sharing your iPhone’s location

Deleting Find My leaves existing location sharing active because removing the app does not turn sharing off.

To stop sharing with everyone, open Find My > Me on your iPhone.

Turn off Share My Location. This ends sharing without transferring it to your Mac.

To stop sharing with just one person, open Find My > People.

Select that person.

Tap Stop Sharing My Location to end sharing with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use iCloud.com to make my Mac the shared location?

No. Selecting your Mac at icloud.com/find displays the computer’s device location when Find My is already configured on it. It does not change the source of your location shared with people.

Can an Apple Watch share my location instead of my iPhone?

Yes. When your paired iPhone is sharing your location, an Apple Watch GPS + Cellular automatically supplies your location while you are wearing it and out of the iPhone’s range.

Why can’t I change my location-sharing settings?

Screen Time parental controls can lock these settings. On the parent’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Screen Time > the child’s name under Family > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Enter the Screen Time passcode if requested. Under Privacy, review Share My Location and Location Services. For a supervised work or school device, ask the administrator to review Modify Find My settings, Allow Find My Friends, and Allow Find My Device. Changing these restrictions does not enable a Mac as the source.

Does Family Sharing let me choose my Mac as the source?

No. Family Sharing location settings choose which family members receive your location. The Automatically Share Location control also includes future family members. Neither control selects a Mac as the source.
