To remove someone from your Snapchat Best Friends list, send them fewer Snaps and Chats, remove them as a friend, or block them. Reducing interactions preserves the friendship while the automatic list updates. Blocking removes the person from Best Friends and stops private Snaps and Chats, while removing a friend ends the friendship.

The main removal steps apply to Snapchat on iOS and Android and do not require Snapchat+. There is no manual removal button for the automatic list, so choose based on whether you want to keep the friendship, end it, or stop private contact.

The short version

  • Keep the friendship: Send fewer Snaps and Chats to that person and communicate more with other friends.
  • Remove the friendship: Press and hold their name in Chat, then tap Manage Friendship > Remove Friend.
  • Stop private contact: Choose Block under Manage Friendship to remove them from Best Friends and prevent private Snaps and Chats.
  • Know the difference: Emoji changes, muting, and display controls do not directly remove automatic Best Friends.

Keep the friendship and change your interactions

Start by sending fewer one-to-one Snaps and Chats to the person you want to move off your list. Communicate more with other friends instead, then allow Snapchat to update the list over time. Choose this approach when you still want the person on your friends list.

Snapchat automatically updates up to eight Best Friends based on your interactions. It does not publish a guaranteed waiting period, so do not rely on a deadline such as seven days or two weeks. If waiting does not suit your goal, consider removing the friendship or blocking the person.

To change your communication habits in a browser, open Snapchat for Web and sign in with the same account you use on your phone. Use a supported, up-to-date version of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari, send fewer Snaps and Chats to that person, and communicate more with others. The expected ranking effect follows Snapchat’s interaction-based rule; Snapchat does not document a separate browser removal feature.

Remove someone as a friend

To end the friendship, swipe right to open Chat and press and hold the person’s name. Tap Manage Friendship, then tap Remove Friend. This removes the friendship rather than selectively editing the automatic Best Friends list.

You can reach the same action through their profile. From Chat, tap the friend’s profile icon, tap the three-dot menu at the top, then choose Manage Friendship > Remove Friend. Snapchat does not promise how quickly every Best Friends display refreshes after removal.

Removing someone may still allow them to contact you, depending on your privacy settings. They can also see your public content. If your goal is to stop private Snaps and Chats, block them instead.

Block someone to remove them from Best Friends

Snapchat says blocking removes an account from your Best Friends list. Swipe right to open Chat, press and hold the person’s name, then tap Manage Friendship > Block. The blocked account cannot send you private Snaps or Chats.

Alternatively, open the person’s Chat and tap their profile icon at the top. Tap the three-dot menu, then choose Manage Friendship > Block. Blocking does not prevent them from viewing content you publish publicly.

Mute alerts to help you interact less

Muting can help you reduce contact while keeping the friendship. Open Chat, press and hold the friend’s name, then tap Chat and Notification Settings > Notification Settings. Enable Mute Chats, Mute Calls, or both.

For Stories, press and hold the friend’s name in Chat, tap Story Settings, then enable Mute Story. These controls change notifications or Story placement, so muting alone does not remove Best Friend status. Any ranking change still depends on changing your interactions afterward.

Manage Snapchat Plus favorites and rankings

With an active Snapchat+ subscription in the mobile app, you can choose one pinned #1 Best Friend. From Chat or the Send To screen, press and hold the desired friend, then tap Pin as your #1 Best Friend. Only one friend can occupy that position, and pinning does not delete other automatic Best Friends.

To control the extended ranking display, open your Profile and tap the Snapchat+ membership card. Scroll to Extended Best Friends List and turn it on or off. This display shows eight current Best Friends, eight Upcoming Best Friends, and ranking movement; switching it off leaves the underlying list intact. To view the extended list, open My Account, then tap My Friends.

For the separate planet display, open the Snapchat+ feature management page and turn Solar System on or off. When enabled, open a friend’s Friendship Profile and tap the Best Friends badge to see your planet in their ranking. This controls your Solar System display, not membership in either person’s automatic Best Friends list.

Change friendship emojis and Charms

If you want to change the friendship emoji, open your Profile and tap the gear icon to open Settings. Under App & Privacy, tap My App. Under Customize My App, tap Friend Emojis on iOS or Customize Emojis on Android, then customize the relevant emoji.

Changing an emoji affects its appearance, not the person’s ranking or Best Friend status. Available replacement emojis vary by device, and not every emoji is supported. If your preferred emoji is unavailable, choose another supported replacement.

For a Charm that offers hiding, open the Friendship Profile and scroll to the bottom. Tap the Charm to expand it, tap its three-dot menu, then tap Hide Charm followed by Hide. The Charm disappears for both friends, but hiding it does not remove a Best Friend or hide the entire list.

Clear Chat clutter without resetting Best Friends

Clearing a conversation changes its visibility in the Chat feed, and Snapchat does not document it as a Best Friends reset. Open your Profile, tap the gear icon for Settings, then under App & Privacy, tap My Privacy & Data. Clearing a conversation does not delete saved or sent content.

On iOS, under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data > Clear Conversations, then tap the cross beside the name. On Android, under Manage My Data, tap Clear Conversation.

For My AI, use the following Chat controls only when they appear in your app. Swipe right from Camera to open Chat, find My AI, then press and hold its name. Tap Chat and Notification Settings, then choose Unpin Conversation or Clear from Chat Feed. If you clear the conversation, confirm the action when prompted.

Snapchat does not document either My AI action as a way to remove it from automatic Best Friends. Clearing the cache is a storage and troubleshooting action, and Snapchat does not document it as a ranking reset either. Snapchat also does not document removing and immediately re-adding someone, or blocking and immediately unblocking them, as reliable ranking resets. To change list membership, return to reducing interactions, removing the friendship, or blocking the person.

Delete the account only when you want to leave Snapchat

Account deletion affects your entire Snapchat account and its friendships. To start through a browser or from Android, sign in at the Snapchat account portal, select Delete my account, enter your password, then select Continue. On iOS, you can first open your Profile, tap the gear icon, scroll to Account Actions, and tap Delete Account before following the portal steps.

Your account is initially deactivated for 30 days. Snapchat says permanent deletion follows after 30 additional days, or 180 additional days in India. Choose a friendship action instead when your goal is only to remove one person.
