Level up your Steam profile by earning XP from trading-card badges, Community tasks, eligible game ownership, and the Seasonal Badge in the Points Shop. Start with available Community tasks, then use cards or Steam Points you already have. Your account must be unrestricted before you can raise its displayed level.

The short version

  • Check eligibility: A limited account stays at level 0 until you meet Steam's qualifying US$5 equivalent spending requirement.
  • Start with Community tasks: Complete the unfinished tasks on your Community badge page to earn badge XP.
  • Craft card sets: A completed trading-card badge awards 100 XP, and regular game badges can reach badge level 5.
  • Use existing points: Redeem Steam Points for the Seasonal Badge to turn points into profile XP.
  • Watch event timing: Summer and Winter Sale cards offer additional badge opportunities during their events.

Check your level and unlock account eligibility

Sign in to Steam, open your profile, and select Badges. Create your Community profile first if you have not set it up. The badge page displays your level, total XP, and the XP needed for your next level.

At the beginning, each level requires 100 XP. That requirement rises by another 100 XP per level every ten levels, so a badge contributes a smaller share of a level as you advance. Use the remaining XP displayed on your badge page to plan your next craft or redemption.

A limited account stays at level 0 until you meet Steam's qualifying spending threshold of at least US$5 equivalent. Steam Store game purchases count, as does purchasing a qualifying Steam gift after its recipient redeems it. Steam converts regional spending to US dollars; meeting the threshold enables leveling but is not itself an XP reward.

To qualify through Wallet funding, open the upper-right account menu and select Account Details > +Add funds to your Steam Wallet. Add at least US$5 equivalent through a qualifying payment. You can also use the Steam Wallet funding page in your browser.

A qualifying retail Wallet card or code is another option. On Steam's Wallet redemption screen, enter it in Steam Wallet Code and select Continue, redeeming at least US$5 equivalent. Receiving a digital gift card from another Steam user does not satisfy this requirement.

Complete your Community badge tasks

Open your Community badge from Badges and complete the unfinished tasks displayed for your account. You can also open your Community badge task page while signed in. Follow its displayed requirements rather than assuming every account has the same unfinished checklist.

Your badge progresses through Pillar of Community, Community Ambassador, and Community Leader. Community Leader displays 500 XP, making these tasks a useful starting point before buying cards. Return to Badges to check your progress and remaining XP.

Collect cards and craft game badges

Check a game's Store features for Steam Trading Cards, then play participating games through Steam to collect available drops. Ordinary gameplay generally supplies about half a complete set. Open the game's entry under Badges to identify the cards you still need.

Once you have a complete set, open your persona-name menu, select Badges, and choose that game's badge. Select Craft a Badge to turn the set into a badge worth 100 XP. Steam also uses the label Craft Badge on some crafting screens.

Collect another complete set for the same game and craft again to upgrade its regular badge. Repeat through badge level 5, using five completed sets for all five regular levels. Once you reach that limit, choose another game's badge or a different XP route.

Foil cards form a separate badge and cannot upgrade your ordinary game badge. Collect the complete foil set, select its foil badge entry under Badges, and craft it. Games with Steam Trading Cards have five regular badge levels and one foil badge.

For participating free-to-play games, open the game's badge page and select How do I earn card drops? to check its purchase conditions. Make qualifying in-game purchases, then play to receive the unlocked drops. Valve documents approximately one drop per US$9 spent, although historical entitlements can differ.

Get missing cards through trades or the Market

Open Community > Market and search for the missing trading card. Open its item page, select Buy, and complete the purchase order while signed in. Repeat for the remaining cards, then return to the badge page to craft.

If you need the alternative Market interface, select Exit Market Beta on an item or search page. Buy your missing cards there, then craft the completed set. Purchase-control wording varies by item type.

To fund card purchases with unwanted items, open the Market and select Sell an item, or sell an eligible item from Inventory. Complete any required listing confirmation, then use the resulting Wallet funds to buy missing cards. Selling alone awards no profile XP.

To trade, open your persona-name menu and select Inventory > Trade Offers > New Trade Offer. Choose a friend and drag items from both inventories into the trade boxes. Confirm the contents, select Make Offer, and complete the required confirmation, then craft once the cards arrive.

You can also open Friends, choose a friend's profile, and select ... > Offer a Trade, or open a trader's Unique Trade URL. Select the items, confirm the contents, and choose Make Offer. Complete any required confirmation before using the received cards.

Use booster packs to collect more cards

After exhausting a participating game's card drops, log in to Steam each week to maintain booster-pack eligibility. Awards are random, and each pack contains three cards. Open any awarded pack, complete the card set, and craft its badge.

To create a booster with Gems, open Inventory > Steam and inspect eligible Community items for their Gem-recycling option. Recycle eligible items, then visit the Steam booster pack creator, select an offered game, and confirm with Make Pack. Open the pack and check which cards your set still needs.

Recycling items and creating or opening boosters do not directly award profile XP. Use trades or the Market to fill any remaining gaps, then craft the completed set. Treat boosters as a source of cards rather than a guaranteed completed badge.

Redeem Steam Points for the Seasonal Badge

Open Store > Points Shop > Seasonal Badge, select your desired badge level, and complete redemption while signed in. The current selection offers levels 1 through 40. Level 40 awards 4,000 XP and costs 40,000 points before account-specific upgrade adjustments.

Qualifying Steam purchases earn 100 points per US$1 equivalent, including eligible games, DLC, hardware, applications, soundtracks, and in-game items. Wallet funding and Community Market purchases do not earn points. Steam Points and profile XP are separate balances, so redeem the Seasonal Badge to turn those points into leveling progress.

Collect ownership and account rewards

Purchase qualifying games through the Steam Store, then reopen Badges to inspect your automatically updated game-ownership badge and XP. Installation and gameplay are not the mechanism for this purchase-based XP. Steam does not promise a fixed XP amount per game.

Check profile-feature eligibility before treating a game as a leveling opportunity. Games without enabled profile features do not count toward Game Collector totals. Do not assume every free game, DLC, borrowed game, or library shortcut increases ownership-based XP.

To register a purchased retail game key, open Games > Activate a Product on Steam... in the desktop client and follow the activation instructions. For a received game gift, open its notification and select Accept Gift. Check the added game's badge, card, and profile-feature eligibility afterward, because its leveling benefit is conditional. Neither key activation nor receiving a game gift removes limited-account restrictions.

Your Years of Service badge gains XP automatically on account anniversaries. No purchase or claim is required. You cannot speed up account age, so use available badges for progress you can earn now.

If you have an available personal Steam Replay 2025, sign in, open it, and view it. Then return to Badges to check for its 50-XP badge. Viewing that Replay is the badge's qualifying condition.

Craft sale badges when cards are available

During an active Summer or Winter Sale, crafting a game badge grants an additional sale trading card. Qualifying sale purchases also award a card for each US$10 equivalent spent. Open the sale badge and select How do I get more cards? to track purchase progress.

Collect the complete sale-card set, open Badges, choose the sale badge, and select Craft Badge. Sale badges have no crafting limit, so repeat with additional complete sets. For a foil sale badge, collect the complete foil set, select its foil badge entry under Badges, and choose Craft Badge.

Complete sale sets remain craftable after the event ends. Sale cards lose trading and Market eligibility 30 days after the sale, so obtain missing cards before that deadline. New sale-card availability and bonus drops from game-badge crafting are limited to the sale itself; crafting a week early for mystery cards is no longer a current method.

Fix blocked trades and feature access

If Steam blocks a trade or Market action, read the displayed restriction. Market eligibility ordinarily requires a successful purchase more than seven days old but less than a year old, plus 15 days of Steam Guard protection. Meet the stated requirements and wait for applicable restrictions or holds to expire, because Steam Support cannot waive them.

After submitting a trade or Market listing, open its confirmation request in Steam Mobile if you use its authenticator, or follow the email confirmation otherwise. Verify the transaction and confirm it. Complete this step before expecting a pending trade or listing to finish.

If parental controls block access, an adult family member can open Account Settings > Family Management > Manage and expand the child's entry. Review Enable Parental controls and the Steam-feature permissions, then adjust permitted Store, Community, and game access as appropriate. These permissions enable access without awarding XP or changing badge requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Steam achievements trigger trading-card drops?

No, achievements do not trigger ordinary trading-card drops. Valve ties those drops to playtime in participating games.

Do you need to install Steam to manage badges?

No, you can manage badges through the Steam Community website in your browser. If you want the desktop client, open Valve's Steam product page, select Install Steam for your platform, and sign in.

Which Steam app should you install on your phone?

Open Valve's mobile-app page and choose Steam Mobile for Store, Community, Market, and transaction-confirmation features. Steam Chat and Steam Link are separate apps.

Can Steam Support grant levels or missing badge XP?

No, Steam Support cannot grant levels, XP, badges, or cards. You must earn them through Steam's supported account and badge mechanisms.

Can Community Awards still earn badge XP or transfer points?

No, Second Edition awards do not advance the retained Community Patron or Community Contributor badges, and they do not transfer points to recipients. First Edition awards can no longer be granted.

Can you still complete old Steam Awards or Holiday Auction badges?

The Steam Awards 2025 nomination window ended December 1, 2025, so its old task instructions do not provide a current earning route. The 2014 Holiday Auction has also ended, leaving its bidding and winning steps unavailable.
