YouTube won't load in Chrome, and the video is stuck instead of playing. Start with a quick reload, then work through connection checks, extensions, and browser settings to narrow down the problem. These fixes focus on Chrome on a computer.

Give the video a fresh start

Click Chrome’s Reload button. You can also press Ctrl+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+R on Mac.

Still stuck? Reload without using cached content: press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on Mac.

Next, quit Chrome completely. On Windows, choose More > Exit. On Mac, choose Chrome > Quit Google Chrome. On a Chromebook, close Chrome.

Reopen Chrome, using the Launcher on a Chromebook.

Try the video again.

If restarting Chrome does not help, restart your computer. If playback still fails afterward, compare browsers and check your connection next.

Find out whether the connection is the problem

Open the same video in another current browser, such as Firefox or Safari, or on another supported device. This helps separate a Chrome-specific failure from a video, account, or network problem.

Open other websites in Chrome. Failures across several sites point toward the connection.

Check that your computer is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

On public Wi-Fi, complete the network’s sign-in page when Chrome prompts you.

Run an internet speed test. YouTube recommends approximately 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K.

Pause other downloads or streams if your connection cannot keep up.

Once the player shows its controls, open Settings > Quality.

Select a lower available resolution.

Tip: If the video works in another browser, watch there while troubleshooting Chrome.

Disable extensions that interrupt playback

Ad blockers and other extensions can cause YouTube playback trouble in Chrome.

Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.

Turn off your extensions using their switches, including ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, and extensions that modify video playback.

Reload YouTube. If the video now plays, an extension is interfering.

Turn one extension back on.

Test the video again. Repeat this process for each extension until playback breaks.

Leave the problem extension disabled, or select Remove on its extension card.

For an explicit ad-blocker warning, disabling blocking just for YouTube is another option. In AdBlock, choose Don’t run on pages on this site > Exclude. In Adblock Plus, use its Power control. If your extension uses different labels, turn it off through Chrome’s Manage extensions page.

Reload YouTube after changing the blocker’s settings.

If blocking is already disabled or you have no blocker installed, select Report issue in the lower-left corner of YouTube’s warning.

Bring Chrome up to date

Updating addresses playback problems tied to an outdated browser.

On Windows, Mac, or Linux, open More > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates.

Select Relaunch if offered.

On a Chromebook, select the time.

Open Settings > About ChromeOS.

Select Check for updates.

After the Chromebook update downloads, select Restart in the update notification.

Try the YouTube video again after the restart.

Test a clean session and clear stored data

If extensions are already off, test YouTube in a separate browsing session before deleting anything.

Choose More > New Incognito window.

Keep extensions disabled for this test, including any permitted to run in Incognito.

Open the video in that window. Successful playback points toward a difference in extensions, cookies, or your signed-in session. It does not establish that cached files caused the problem.

To clear only YouTube’s stored data, open this path in your normal window: More > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions.

Search for YouTube.

Select Delete beside its entry.

Confirm with Delete. Be ready to sign in again and restore site preferences after deleting cookies.

Reopen YouTube to test playback.

If clearing YouTube’s data does not help, open More > Delete browsing data to clear Chrome’s broader cache and cookies.

Choose All time as the time range.

Select Cached images and files.

Select Cookies and other site data.

Deselect unrelated categories.

Click Delete data. This deletion also affects other sites’ cookies, including stored sign-ins and preferences.

If videos still will not load after clearing data, check whether Chrome is blocking JavaScript.

Allow JavaScript for YouTube

This fixes playback failures caused by blocked JavaScript.

Open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript.

Select Sites can use JavaScript.

For a YouTube-specific override, open YouTube’s View site information control beside the address.

Select Site settings.

Change a blocked JavaScript permission to Allow.

Reload YouTube to apply the change.

Try a graphics change for black or green video

For black or green video, rendering faults, or crashes on Windows, Mac, or Linux, open More > Settings > System. This graphics toggle is not available on ChromeOS.

Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.

Restart Chrome.

Test the affected video again.

If graphics trouble continues on Windows, check Windows Update for graphics-driver updates first. Microsoft recommends it as the primary driver-update route.

To check through Device Manager, right-click Start.

Open Device Manager.

Expand Display adapters.

Right-click your graphics device.

Select Update driver.

Choose the automatic driver-search option.

On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Install the compatible macOS update offered to update its graphics software.

Tip: Use these graphics checks for black or green video, rendering faults, and crashes.

Reset Chrome when the earlier fixes fail

A reset is a later option when the problem remains specific to desktop Chrome. It resets settings and disables extensions while retaining saved bookmarks and passwords.

If playback broke immediately after you changed experimental flags, enter chrome://flags in the address bar.

Select Reset all.

Relaunch Chrome.

Test the video before proceeding with a broader reset.

To reset Chrome’s regular settings, open More > Settings > Reset settings.

Select Restore settings to their original defaults.

Confirm with Reset settings.

Try YouTube again.

If playback still fails, or the same problem affects multiple devices, open YouTube’s profile picture menu.

Select Send feedback.

Describe the error, affected video, browser, device, and steps that reproduce the problem.

Select Send to submit the report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does only one YouTube video refuse to play?

Read the player’s message before changing Chrome settings. For a private video, open the exact link while signed into the Google account invited by the owner. For an age-restricted video, sign into an eligible adult account and complete any requested age verification. Chrome settings do not restore access to videos unavailable in your country or region.

What should I try in Chrome on my phone?

Update Chrome first. On Android, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available > Chrome > Update. On iPhone or iPad, open App Store > Profile > Available Updates > Chrome > Update. Then compare playback on Wi-Fi and mobile data to isolate a connection problem. Check your plan’s mobile-data charges before switching.

Why does YouTube fail on my work or school network?

Account or network restrictions limit which videos are available. Open YouTube’s content restrictions page to see identified restrictions. Contact the administrator when filtering is enforced. A parent must adjust parent-enforced restrictions.

What if Chrome is frozen and will not close?

On Windows, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Open Task manager > Processes. Select Google Chrome or chrome.exe, then choose End task. On Mac, press Command+Option+Esc. Select Google Chrome, then choose Force quit. Reopen Chrome afterward.
