AdBlock can stop blocking YouTube ads in Chrome even when the extension still looks installed and active. The usual cause is a stale filter list, limited site access, an allowlist rule, or YouTube blocking playback after detecting an ad blocker.

Start with the AdBlock controls, then move into Chrome only if ads still appear or videos will not play.

1. Refresh AdBlock filters first

Do this first: update AdBlock's YouTube-blocking lists, then reload the video.

  1. 1.Click the AdBlock icon on the Chrome toolbar.
  2. 2.Click the gear icon.
  3. 3.Open Filter lists.
  4. 4.Select EasyList.
  5. 5.Select Anti-Circumvention filters.
  6. 6.Clear Acceptable Ads.
  7. 7.Click update now.
  8. 8.Reload YouTube.

If the icon is missing, click Chrome's puzzle icon, then click the pin icon next to AdBlock.

2. Give AdBlock access to YouTube

Chrome can keep AdBlock installed while limiting what it can read or change on YouTube. Open Chrome's More menu, choose Extensions, then Manage extensions. Find AdBlock, open Details, and confirm the extension is turned on.

Next to Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit, choose On all sites. To limit it to YouTube instead, choose On specific sites, open Permissions, choose Allowed sites, click Add, and add youtube.com.

3. Remove YouTube from the allowlist

  1. 1.Open YouTube.
  2. 2.Click the AdBlock icon.
  3. 3.Click Resume Ad Blocking.
  4. 4.Reload YouTube.

For the manual route, click the AdBlock icon, open the gear icon, choose Customize, then Manually edit your filters. Click Edit, delete rules containing youtube.com, click Save, and reload YouTube.

4. Force updates for AdBlock and Chrome

Chrome updates extensions automatically, but the manual update check is the fastest way to pull a waiting AdBlock update.

  1. 1.Type about:extensions in Chrome's address bar.
  2. 2.Turn Developer mode on.
  3. 3.Click Update.

Then update Chrome itself. Open More, choose Help, then About Google Chrome. Let Chrome check for updates, then click Relaunch if Chrome asks for it.

5. Disable extensions that interfere

Multiple ad blockers, privacy extensions, script tools, VPN extensions, proxy extensions, and companion extensions can break AdBlock's YouTube behavior. Test with AdBlock running by itself.

  1. 1.Open More.
  2. 2.Choose Extensions.
  3. 3.Choose Manage extensions.
  4. 4.Turn off every extension except AdBlock.
  5. 5.Reload YouTube and play the video again.
  6. 6.Turn the other extensions back on one at a time.
  7. 7.Refresh YouTube after each one.

If Chrome labels an extension corrupted, click Repair, then Repair extension. If it stays corrupted, run antivirus or anti-malware software and remove software affecting Chrome.

6. Clear YouTube data and test Incognito correctly

Old cookies and cached files can keep YouTube stuck in a broken playback or extension state. Open More, choose Delete browsing data, set Time range to All time or the range you want, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Delete data.

You can open the same screen with Ctrl + Shift + Delete on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. On macOS, use Command + Shift + Delete. You can also type Delete browsing data in the address bar and choose the Delete browsing data action chip.

Incognito tests need one extra switch. Open chrome://extensions, choose AdBlock, open Details, and turn Allow in incognito on before testing YouTube there.

7. Reinstall AdBlock cleanly

If AdBlock is missing, corrupted, counterfeit, or came from an unofficial source, remove it and install a clean copy from the official product page.

  • Right-click the AdBlock toolbar icon.
  • Choose Remove from Chrome.
  • Click Remove.
  • Open getadblock.com.
  • Click Get AdBlock Now.
  • Click Add to Chrome.
  • Accept the permissions prompt.
  • Close the payment page tab if it appears.
  • Pin AdBlock from Chrome's puzzle icon.

You can also remove it from chrome://extensions by choosing AdBlock, then Remove, then Remove again.

8. Choose the right fix when YouTube blocks playback

YouTube's supported position is that ad blockers violate its Terms of Service, and YouTube can block playback when it detects one. When the problem is video playback, the official fix is to allow ads on YouTube or use YouTube Premium.

To allow ads with AdBlock, click the AdBlock icon, choose Don't run on pages on this site, click Exclude, and reload YouTube. That fixes playback, not ad blocking.

For an official ad-free route, open YouTube, select your account or avatar, choose Purchases and memberships, then choose YouTube Premium or Premium Lite where available. Premium Lite removes ads from many video categories, but ads can still appear on music content, Shorts, and search or browse surfaces.

Skip old Chrome workarounds that claim to keep unsupported Manifest V2 ad blockers running. Chrome 138 disabled Manifest V2 everywhere on July 24, 2025, and Chrome 139 removed the enterprise policy path. If Chrome marks an older blocker unsupported, open More, choose Extensions, then Manage Extensions, open the unsupported extension, choose Details, then More, then Find Alternatives, and install a supported Chrome Web Store option such as uBlock Origin Lite.

On school or work computers, an admin can control whether Chrome extensions are installed, allowed, blocked, or removed. On Chrome for mobile, AdBlock states that Chrome does not support ad-blocking extensions, so use desktop Chrome, a supported mobile browser or content-blocking surface, or YouTube Premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does YouTube still show ads after I updated AdBlock?

Check Chrome site access and AdBlock's allowlist next. AdBlock needs permission to run on YouTube, and YouTube must not be excluded in AdBlock's custom rules.

Should I test AdBlock in Incognito mode?

Yes, but only after enabling it for Incognito. Open chrome://extensions, choose AdBlock, open Details, and turn on Allow in incognito.

What is the safest place to reinstall AdBlock?

Use getadblock.com or the Chrome Web Store. Avoid third-party download portals when reinstalling a browser extension.

What should I do if Chrome says my ad blocker is unsupported?

Use Chrome's Find Alternatives option from the unsupported extension's Details menu, then install a supported Chrome Web Store option.
