Fix Voicemod not working in Discord by selecting your physical microphone in Voicemod and the Voicemod virtual microphone as Discord’s input device. Keep Voicemod running and select your physical headphones for output in both apps. Enable Voice Changer and select a voice before checking your audio in a call.
The desktop steps cover Voicemod on Windows and macOS, with separate permission checks for Discord in a browser. Windows Settings paths below use Windows 11 menus.
The short version
- Route the microphone: Select your physical microphone in Voicemod and the Voicemod virtual microphone in Discord.
- Enable effects: Turn on Voice Changer and select a voice in Voicemod.
- Check filtering: Discord noise suppression and input sensitivity can cut off transformed speech or soundboard clips.
- Test a call: Ask another participant to check your audio because Discord’s microphone test can behave differently.

Correct the microphone routing in both apps
Close your communication apps, then open Voicemod and select Settings. Set Input device to your physical microphone and select your headphones for output. Adjust microphone gain without letting it reach the red area, then keep Voicemod running while you reopen Discord.
In Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video and set Input Device to the Voicemod virtual microphone. Set Output Device to your physical headphones. This routes the processed voice from Voicemod into Discord.
Back in Voicemod, enable Voice Changer and select a voice. On macOS, use the bottom-bar Voice Changer icon, then turn on Hear Myself using the ear icon to hear the transformed voice locally. Join a Discord call and ask another participant to check your voice and soundboard. Voicemod says Discord’s microphone test can behave differently from calls.
Check mute controls and transmission mode
Release your microphone or headset’s hardware mute control, then reseat its USB or 3.5 mm connection. Try another available port if audio still fails. In Discord, turn off mute or deafen using the crossed-out microphone or headphone icons.
Open Discord’s User Settings > Voice & Video, find Input Mode (under the Voice tab in the newer tabbed layout), and try Voice Activity. If you use Push to Talk, hold your configured transmission key while speaking or playing a soundboard clip. Browser push-to-talk has limitations, so try Voice Activity when troubleshooting Discord web.
For trouble inside a server voice channel, ask a server administrator to remove any server mute or deafen restriction. Ask them to check your Connect and Speak permissions as well.
Stop filters from cutting off voices and sounds
When speech gets clipped or soundboard effects disappear, open Discord’s User Settings > Voice & Video. Find Noise Suppression and select None. In the newer tabbed layout, these controls are under Voice.
For Voice Activity, find Input Sensitivity and disable automatic sensitivity. Voicemod recommends moving the threshold to -70 dB. Check whether quiet speech and soundboard clips now transmit in a call.
Voicemod’s own processing can also cut off audio. Open its audio configuration and select Advanced Settings, then check whether Background Noise Reduction or Noise Gate is enabled; some versions show only Noise Gate. Disable any enabled control for testing. If speech returns, re-enable those controls gradually and adjust Noise Gate Level.
Check your microphone or headset’s companion app for additional noise suppression and temporarily disable it when diagnosing clipped speech or missing effects. On Windows 11 PCs with Studio Effects audio processing, select the taskbar Network, Sound, or Battery area, open Studio Effects, and disable Voice focus. Check your audio after changing the relevant filter.
On macOS, the microphone-mode check applies only when the app exposes Mic Modes. While using that app, open the menu-bar Video control and select Mic Mode > Standard. If your app does not show those controls, continue with microphone permissions.
Allow microphone access for your apps and browser
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. These permissions apply to Voicemod, Discord, and desktop browsers.
On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Enable access for Voicemod and Discord. If you use Discord web, enable access for your browser as well.
For Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone and select Voicemod in the microphone dropdown. Change a blocked Discord entry to Allow. When responding to Discord’s microphone permission prompt instead, select Allow while visiting the site. If those permissions are locked in a work or school Chrome profile, ask your administrator to allow microphone access for Discord.
In Firefox, open Discord and optionally select Remember this decision on its microphone prompt, then select Allow. To change an existing permission, open Firefox’s Settings, locate Permissions under Privacy & Security or Permissions and data, then open Microphone > Settings…. Change Discord’s microphone permission and select Save Changes.
Restore missing or muted Windows audio devices
If Voicemod’s virtual device is disabled, right-click Start and open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Enable the Voicemod virtual audio device. Next, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound and inspect both Playback and Recording.
In each device list, right-click and select Show disabled devices, then enable any disabled Voicemod playback or recording endpoint. Under Playback, open the Voicemod Line device’s Properties > Levels and unmute it. Repeat that level check under Recording for the Voicemod microphone.
If the physical microphone itself is silent, on Windows 11 open Settings > System > Sound > Input and select it. Use Start test, Stop test, and Play to check its recording, then adjust Input volume. For automated troubleshooting on Windows 11, return to Sound and open Advanced > Troubleshoot common sound problems > Input devices.
For a physical audio-device problem that persists, right-click Start and open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the affected audio device and select Update driver. After addressing the physical microphone, check the routing in Voicemod and Discord again.
Address crackling and audio dropouts
For crackling or dropouts on Windows, close resource-heavy applications and unnecessary live audio meters while checking Voicemod. If distortion continues, exit Voicemod and open Control Panel > Sound > Recording. Select your microphone and open Properties > Advanced > Default format.
Choose a supported 16-bit, 48000 Hz format and match the other devices in the audio path. For devices that do not permit format changes there, use the manufacturer’s driver software. Reopen Voicemod and reselect your input and output devices.
For an audio driver that exposes an enhancements checkbox, open Control Panel > Sound > Playback and select your device. Open Properties > Enhancements, select Disable all enhancements, then select OK. If your driver does not expose that checkbox, continue with the Discord checks below.
Refresh Discord and reset its voice settings
In Discord desktop, press Ctrl + R on Windows or Command + R on macOS to refresh the app. If necessary, quit and reopen Discord, then restart your computer. Reopen Voicemod before checking Discord again.
Resetting Discord’s voice and video settings resets your existing configuration, so you must configure Voicemod again afterward. In the current tabbed layout, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and select Reset Voice and Video Settings. Then select the Voicemod virtual microphone as input and your physical headphones as output again.
On Windows desktop installations that show Audio Subsystem under User Settings > Voice & Video, try switching between Standard and Legacy. If that control is absent, continue to the next check. Another advanced Windows troubleshooting option is to quit Discord, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator.
Reinstall the affected app or send diagnostic details
If the relevant checks still fail, obtain a fresh installer for the affected app. On the official Voicemod product page, select Download for Free and follow the download flow. For Discord, choose your operating system’s download on the official Discord download page.
Uninstalling removes the selected application from your computer. To reinstall on Windows 11, quit the affected app, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Voicemod or Discord, and select More > Uninstall. Install it again using its official installer, then configure the audio routing.
For continuing problems, send Voicemod support your app versions, symptoms, and relevant screenshots; you can take a screenshot of your settings to show the selected devices. When contacting Discord support, include your input and output devices and the log from Voice & Video > Debugging. Describe whether the failure affects transformed speech, soundboard clips, or all microphone audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do only AI voices fail in Voicemod?
Missing AI voices can involve processor support, while locked voices can require the appropriate PRO entitlement. Check your processor specifications for AVX2 support; in Steam, open Help > System Information. For a locked voice, try an available free voice to distinguish that limitation from a Discord audio problem.
Why does Voicemod mute unexpectedly when I press a shortcut?
Open Voicemod’s Settings > Keybinds > System Keybinds and check mute and monitoring assignments. For a voice or sound, select Add keybind and enter a combination that does not conflict with other shortcuts. Voicemod says its keybind feature does not support mouse buttons, macro keys, or extra Fn keys.
What if an app only uses the default system microphone?
For an app or browser path that cannot select an input directly, set Voicemod as the system input. On Windows, open Control Panel > Sound > Recording, select the Voicemod microphone, and select Set Default. On Mac, open Audio MIDI Setup, right-click the Voicemod microphone, and select Use This Device for Sound Input.
How do I reconnect Voicemod Mobile as a desktop controller?
On desktop, open Voicemod’s Settings > Controller. Open the mobile controller and scan the desktop QR code with Voicemod’s scanner. You still need to configure desktop audio routing for Discord.
What should I check if Discord disconnects instead of losing microphone audio?
Check Discord’s Status page and try another network for voice disconnections. Investigate VPN or firewall interference as a connection issue. For Voicemod’s Server connection failed error, check the Status page linked from its connection troubleshooting and any connection restrictions.
