Check requirements and your selected GPU

Compare your PC with the requirements for the current PC Standard and Deluxe editions. You need Windows 11 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1660 6GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB, DirectX 12, and an SSD. Upgrade an unmet requirement before troubleshooting settings.

You can check RAM on your computer to compare its memory with the requirement. Include your processor, graphics card, operating system, and storage in that comparison.

On a Windows 11 PC with multiple GPUs, open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Under Custom options for apps, select Resident Evil Requiem, then choose Options > High performance > Save. Restart the game to test the selection.

For a laptop, connect the appropriate charger. Open Control Panel > Power Options and select High performance if that plan is listed; available plans vary by device. For heat-related instability, keep ventilation unobstructed and leave space around the PC.

Update the game and repair its files

In Steam, open Library, select Resident Evil Requiem, then open Manage > Properties > Updates. Under Automatic updates, choose Always keep this game updated. Allow queued downloads to finish before testing the game.

For the Epic edition, open Library and click the game’s three-dot menu, then select Manage. Turn on Auto Update; blue indicates that it is enabled. Let the update finish before launching.

If updating does not resolve the crash, restart your computer and reopen your launcher before repairing the installation. In Steam’s Library, right-click Resident Evil Requiem and select Properties... > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for verification and any replacement downloads to finish.

In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, click the game’s three-dot menu, and choose Manage > Verify. Once verification finishes, launch the game again. If it still crashes, continue with graphics drivers and Windows updates.

Update your graphics driver and Windows

Install a current graphics driver that matches your GPU and Windows version. You can follow the steps to find and update your graphics driver, or use the matching NVIDIA or AMD route below.

For a supported GeForce GPU, use NVIDIA’s official driver selector to obtain the current compatible Game Ready driver. Install it, then restart Windows. If you already use NVIDIA app on a supported system, you can also obtain a compatible Game Ready driver from its Drivers section.

For a supported Radeon GPU, use AMD’s official driver download page and its product selector or automatic detection option. In the current AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition interface, you can instead search for System, open System Settings, and select Manage Updates. AMD Install Manager opens so you can install the available compatible update.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart when requested. Test Requiem again before changing its graphics settings.

Try the lowest graphics settings

When you can reach the game’s menus, open Options > GRAPHICS > Image > Quality Settings. Change the available options to Lowest, then test the game again. Capcom recommends this graphics troubleshooting step for the PC editions.

If the game crashes before you can reach those menus, relaunch it and hold 7 + 8 + 9 between startup and the Capcom logo. That forces the lowest graphics settings without entering the menu. If the crash continues, check for application conflicts next.

For a blank screen or another display-related failure, open Options > Graphics. Test Display Mode, HDR Mode, Vertical Synchronization, and Screen Resolution individually.

Close overlays and check launch settings

Exit recording tools, performance overlays, and other unnecessary applications before retesting. For Steam’s overlay, open Library, right-click Resident Evil Requiem, and select Properties... > General. Uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.

In Discord on Windows, click the cogwheel beside your username to open User Settings, then open the overlay settings tab. Turn off Enable Overlay; an x indicates that it is disabled. Restart the game and test again.

Next, right-click re9.exe and open Properties > Compatibility. Uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode for:. Repeat for Steam.exe or EpicGamesLauncher.exe if necessary.

With administrator access, you can also try launching with elevated privileges. Right-click your launcher’s executable and select Run as administrator, then try the game. If necessary, repeat for re9.exe.

Delete the game shader caches

Deleting these files removes the game’s shader cache files. With the game closed, delete shader.cache, shader.cache2, and pipelinelist.bin from the installation folder beside re9.exe. Skip any of those files that are absent.

Launch the game again after removing the named files. If it still crashes, continue with the component checks that match your Windows edition and symptoms.

Install missing media or DirectX components

If you use Windows 11 N and encounter cutscene playback failures associated with missing media components, install the Media Feature Pack. On Windows 11 N, open Settings > System > Optional features, then select View features beside Add an optional feature. Check Media Feature Pack, select Next > Add, and restart after installation.

On older supported Windows 11 N layouts, open Settings > Apps > Optional features instead. This fix applies to Windows 11 N, not ordinary Windows 11 Home or Pro. Obtain the pack through Optional features rather than an old standalone package.

If Optional features is hidden or unavailable on a managed PC, ask your administrator to review the organization’s feature-installation policies. Microsoft says organizational policies can hide this page, so leave changes to those controls to your administrator.

For missing supplemental DirectX components, open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime download page and select Download. Run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer recommended by Capcom. After installation, test the game again before rebuilding its installation.

Rebuild or reinstall a damaged installation

For persistent Steam installation problems, Capcom recommends rebuilding the game folder. Back up your save data before rebuilding the installation. Close Steam, then rename the game’s folder under steamapps\common, retaining the renamed folder as a backup.

Reopen Steam and verify the game files again through Properties... > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. This downloads a fresh installation. Let the replacement downloads finish before launching the game.

For the Epic edition, reinstall when file verification fails to resolve installation or update corruption. Uninstalling removes the game installation, so back up your save data before proceeding. Open Library, click the game’s three-dot menu, and select Uninstall, then select the game again to install it.

Send persistent crash details to Capcom

If the game still crashes, open the CrashReport folder in the installation directory. In most cases, Capcom’s crash tool saves a ZIP named with the crash date and time there, so prepare the one closest to the crash. Also copy config.ini, which sits in the installation folder for the Steam edition and in %AppData%\Capcom\RESIDENT EVIL requiem for the Epic edition. Include reproduction details and your hardware and driver information.

To collect DirectX diagnostic information, press Windows + R. Enter the following command:

dxdiag

Select Save All Information... to save the diagnostic report. Submit it with any crash ZIP, the configuration file, and reproduction details through Capcom support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you force the lowest graphics settings with a controller?

Yes, relaunch the game and hold X + Y + B between startup and the Capcom logo. You need a controller with the corresponding buttons.

Should you roll back to NVIDIA driver 591.86?

You should not use that specific rollback as the default fix for current crashes. The recommendation to roll back from 595.59 to 591.86 concerned a historical fan-control problem, and NVIDIA’s March 2 update says a replacement driver resolved it.

Does the DirectX runtime installer replace DirectX 12?

No, the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer does not upgrade or replace Windows’ DirectX 12 runtime. It adds older side-by-side runtime components.

Which update choices does AMD Install Manager offer?

Under More options > Preferences, you can choose Recommended or Recommended + Optional. Recommended is the default choice.
