To fix Outlook’s “Something went wrong” account setup error, check your full email address and current password, then add the account again and complete your email provider’s sign-in process. If setup still fails, check the settings for your provider before repairing Outlook or creating a new profile.

The Windows steps cover new Outlook and classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 or Outlook 2024, with separate instructions where they differ. Windows Settings instructions use Windows 11 menus. Start setup from the official Outlook app, complete sign-in only on Microsoft’s or your email provider’s legitimate sign-in page when Outlook directs you there, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

The short version

  • Check account access: Use your complete email address and confirm that you can sign in to your provider’s webmail.
  • Finish authorization: Complete Google, Apple, or Yahoo sign-in and approve the required Outlook access.
  • Match your Outlook version: New Outlook and classic Outlook have different account setup and repair controls.
  • Repair last: Update Outlook and check account settings before trying a fresh profile or app repair.

Check your email address and password

Enter your complete email address as the username and make sure Caps Lock is off before retrying your current password. Open your email provider’s official webmail site and try signing in there. Working webmail gives you temporary mailbox access and helps distinguish an account-access problem from an Outlook setup problem.

If your password changed or expired, change or recover it through your email provider first. You can follow the steps to change your Outlook account password, then reopen Outlook and supply the new password when prompted. For a managed account, contact your organization’s administrator if password recovery is unavailable.

For a personal Microsoft account you cannot access, open the Microsoft account recovery helper, select Sign-in helper, and enter the affected email address or phone number. Follow the account-specific recovery instructions, then retry Outlook after access is restored.

An unavailable internet connection needs attention before another setup attempt. On Windows, open Get Help, enter connect to network and internet, and select Run network diagnostics. Complete the proposed troubleshooting steps, then retry Outlook.

Retry automatic account setup

In new Outlook for Windows, select View > View settings, then open Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account. You can also enter account settings through File > Account info. Enter the intended email address instead of accepting an incorrect suggested account, select Continue, and complete your provider’s sign-in flow.

For Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Live in current classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, select File > Add Account, enter your address, and select Connect. Complete Microsoft’s sign-in process. These accounts require modern authentication, so use automatic configuration instead of older password-only setup.

Removing a partially configured account removes it from the selected scope, so preserve any unsynchronized information first. If the account already appears in new Outlook, open View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts, then select Manage > Remove beside it. When asked, remove it from only this device for a local retry. Removing it from all devices also removes the account’s Microsoft Cloud data across Outlook clients, so calendars or other items that exist only there and not in your provider’s webmail might be permanently lost. Then return to Your accounts > Add Account and repeat setup.

Update Outlook before trying deeper repairs

In classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 or a supported Office 2024 installation, open File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now. Select Enable Updates first when necessary, then restart Outlook after installation. You can also update through Word using File > Account > Update Options > Update Now; if Update Options is unavailable, contact whoever manages Office updates.

For new Outlook installed through Microsoft Store, open Microsoft Store and check Downloads or Library for app updates. On the Library interface, select Get updates, install the available Outlook update, and reopen Outlook. Retry account setup after updating.

Complete Gmail iCloud or Yahoo authorization

For Gmail in new Outlook, open View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account and enter your Gmail address. In classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 or Outlook 2024, select File > Add Account, enter your Gmail address, and select Connect. Complete Google sign-in, select Allow, and finish with Done; if classic Outlook displays “Something went wrong” during this flow, select Retry.

For the Gmail authorization problem in classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, Microsoft identifies the fix starting with Version 2412 Build 18324.20168. After updating, select Retry in the setup error window. During Google authorization, turn on the setting that reads "Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail" and complete sign-in.

For personal Gmail, Google says IMAP is always enabled, so you do not need to enable it before setup. Only when your setup flow lacks Sign in with Google, enable Google Account 2-Step Verification and generate an app password through Google’s app-password controls. Enter that password in Outlook and generate a replacement after changing your Google Account password. Some managed accounts, Advanced Protection, and security-key-only configurations restrict app-password availability; use Google sign-in where available.

For iCloud in new Outlook, add your address through Your accounts > Add Account, select Continue, then select Continue on Sync your iCloud account. In the browser, select Continue or Sign in with iPhone, complete Apple authentication, and select Allow. Return to Outlook and select Done; if authorization fails, retry or select Advanced setup.

When iCloud setup requires an app-specific password, including in classic Outlook, first enable Apple Account two-factor authentication. Sign in to your Apple Account, open Sign-In and Security > App-Specific Passwords, and select Generate an app-specific password. Complete generation and paste the result into Outlook’s password field. Apple revokes app-specific passwords after a primary account password change, so generate a replacement when necessary.

With Yahoo in new Outlook, add your address, select Continue, then select Continue on Sync your Yahoo account. Complete Yahoo sign-in and two-factor authentication, select Agree, and select Open when the browser asks to open Outlook. In classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, begin with File > + Add Account, enter your address, select Connect, complete Yahoo authorization, and select Done.

A Yahoo setup flow without Yahoo’s branded sign-in page requires an app password. Open Yahoo Account Security, find External connections, select Create app password, enter an app name, and select Generate password. Use the generated password in Outlook, then select Done. If generation is unavailable, try a previously used browser without Incognito mode; Yahoo support cannot override eligibility.

Correct third party mail server settings

For a third-party POP or IMAP account in classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 or Outlook 2024, select File > Add Account, enter your address, and expand Advanced options. Select Let me set up my account manually, choose POP or IMAP, enter the password, and select Connect. If setup fails, select Change Account Settings, enter your provider’s settings, and select Connect > Done. This manual procedure does not support native Microsoft 365 or Exchange configuration.

Use the server names, ports, encryption, and login details supplied by your own provider. For an existing POP or IMAP account, open Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts, select the account, and select Change. Correct Incoming mail server, Outgoing mail server, User Name, and Password, then open More Settings > Advanced to match the provider’s ports and encryption. Select OK > Test Account Settings, and after a successful test select Close > Next > Finish.

If IMAP setup never requests a password, uncheck Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) on the IMAP details page and retry. For Outlook.com in current classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, use automatic configuration instead of this manual POP or IMAP route.

Repair or replace a classic Outlook profile

If the account already exists in classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 or Outlook 2024, select File > Account Settings > Account Settings. On the Email tab, select the affected account and select Repair. Complete the wizard and restart Outlook; if that account has no Repair option, try a new profile.

To create a fresh profile, hold Shift while starting classic Outlook. In the profile picker, select Options > New, enter a profile name, select OK, and add your account. Keep the original profile until its local data is secured; this profile procedure does not apply to new Outlook.

A fresh profile is also the route for an existing Outlook.com account configured with incompatible POP or IMAP authentication in current classic Outlook for Microsoft 365. Add the address automatically in the new profile and complete Microsoft sign-in.

Repair Outlook when setup freezes or crashes

For frozen or unresponsive new Outlook, right-click Start and open Task Manager. Select Microsoft Outlook > End task, then reopen Outlook and retry setup.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open Outlook’s More menu, and select Advanced options. For installations exposing these controls, select Repair when offered. Resetting can remove local application data, so preserve unsynchronized information first. If repair fails, select Reset.

For classic Outlook included in Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 Click-to-Run on Windows 11, right-click Start and select Installed apps. Beside Microsoft 365 or Office, open the ellipsis menu, select Modify, and try Quick Repair. If necessary, select Online Repair > Repair; this repairs the Office suite when Outlook is part of it. If the applicable repair controls are missing or setup still fails, use Outlook support.

Get help for a setup error that persists

For repeated authentication failures in classic Outlook on Windows 10 or later, open Get Help and enter Outlook password problem. Follow the selected troubleshooter. Microsoft has moved Outlook diagnostics from the standalone Support and Recovery Assistant into Get Help; these classic Outlook troubleshooters do not support new Outlook.

You can also open Microsoft’s account setup help and select Try guided support. In eligible new Outlook installations, select Help > Support; availability depends on your account and administrator policy. For managed-account restrictions, contact your organization’s help desk. Continue using your provider’s webmail for mailbox access while the Outlook setup problem is investigated.
